Prims are not rezzing until you are VERY close

I am finding that not just attachments, but a lot of other prims are now disappearing when you get more than, say, 15m away.

I just sent Torley two screenshots of some elements of a building I am working on (in this case, a bunch of columns 0.4m x 0.4m in width), one picture from ~20m where they do not appear, and one picture from a few steps closer where they do appear.

my object detail slider is above the midpoint, if that has anything to do with this.

if something is within my draw distance... IMO it should appear

(bug report sent)

I noticed that too and it is driving me nuts. I can't look at something just by hovering a few meters away. I have to literally fly to it, get real near, or nothing will show up (exemple: a house. i see a bit of the base but seems empty, have to go to it to see furniture).
Sadly annoying.

Same. I thought I'd rezzed only part of my house last night, but turned out I was zoomed too far out to see that all of it was actually there. I think I rezzed four houses before I caught that.

Yep, "attachment culling" wound up being "all small objects at distance culling". After the initial panic fades, it isn't so bad but I don't think it was what they intended to do with that patch.

I've noticed the LOD thresholds are much lower with the latest version too, circles become hexagons much closer than they used to. Not nice at all. It would be acceptable if the lag was less as a result or stuff rezzed quicker but it doesnt and isn't

I think the faceted nature of things increased longer ago than the last patch - not to say that it didn't increase even more in the last patch.

Spheres don't look like spheres. The shiny is very obviously made of straight lines on flat plates when it should look rounded.

The rendering time is incredibly long, and you fly or even walk into things that appear after you get to them.

I just flew past a big prim tree - the base of the tree and the top of the tree rezzed at a distance, the top being floating disconnected from the base - the middle part didn't rez till i reached it as I was flying past.

The decison making in the drawing system is such that that if you fly in one direction and turn around, you see objects that are already rendered and visible disappear as you approach them. Then when the reappear they might have gray loading textures.

This happened before attachment culling... it's been around since early 1.8.x I think, or so I've noticed.

Easiest repro may be, in an open field: rez a default plywood cube, 0.5^3 m. Then, rez another one and make the second one 1.0^3 m. Start walking away, backwards, and watch them carefully.

BEFORE

AFTER

I zoomed in with Ctrl-0 but it's really quite noticeable.

I will file a bug report about this to have it verified as this appears to be overly aggressive. I once recall ReallyRick Metropolitan noticed related oddness with some Linden Bears disappearing at an audaciously short distance in Preview 1.8.

Here's another thing to do, see what you think: go to Blumfield, fly 100 m above the ground. Let the houses rez. Then, fly to West Haven next door, and do the same. Keep going back and forth--notice how tiny unlinked things like doors and plants show up before the big houses?

Also a note, not that I recommend it: set material type to Light and see how far you can get before they disappear. :)

(Full Bright doesn't have the same effect.)

But if you link the smaller objects to larger objects they won't dissappear. I think that is the reason people hadn't noticed that much yet.

Any Resis who've noticed this and weren't sure how to describe it--I know I've come across some of you--please post more here.

I have a visual representation of this "aggressive prim culling", until I learn a better name.

I'm at Illusion (138, 162). Carynn Concord's setup makes it very easy to repro.

Torley where those smaller prims linked with the bigger main prim, or not?

No, the hair swatches weren't linked to the main display--linking is what I've been recommending first as a workaround, but understandably, there are situations in which it doesn't work, e.g. no-mod objects and objects by different owners.

If memory serves me correctly, there was an experiment in which ReallyRick Metropolitan lined up his collection of Linden bears and then both of us walked further back, only to see some of them disappear. We bug-reported it at the time but new knowledge has emerged since. :)
