I have been having intermittent problems with my avatar and black on the skin.
At times - doesn't matter which skin I have - I will get black on my arms and legs - switching skins doesnt work - switching shapes doesnt work - sometimes if I trade a skin to someone else they put it on and trade back to me that clears it up for a day or two.
This black is viewable by everyone- I have reinstalled the game etc.
Any ideas what this could be?

The way avatars work is like this: your client downloads the textures of your clothing and tattoo layers, then composites them together. (This process is called "baking".) It then re-uploads the completed texture to the server, where it's distributed to others in the area.
So it sounds like something's going wrong with your video card. Don't worry, it's not necessarily the end of the world, and can almost certainly be fixed. First off, what card do you have? What video drivers is it running? Can you send me a screenshot of the problem, either posted here as a JPEG, or sent to me in SL?
The most likely culprits for any kind of baking error are heat and electricity. If your card isn't getting proper power, or is overheating, you'll start seeing rendering errors like that.
Has the temperature of your computer room increased significantly over the last few weeks? (I'm assuming you live in the northern hemisphere.)

This happens to me occasionally on my Powerbook G4 867. I haven't determined exactly why it happens, but I can usually fix it easily enough by going into the Appearance screen and changing an aspect of my outfit enough for the texture to have to re-bake (the change must be a visible change, so you can't just change the color of your underpants).

I've been able to repro on several different and highly stable boxes. Bug has been reported. Ignore all that tech mumbo-jumbo folks. Your 'puters are just fine. SL is broken for a change.

If you've got blackface, try turning off "Avatar Vertex Program" in SL's Preferences/Adv. Graphics.
