Ok for something to try...

Go to the VIDEO CARD settings, manage 3d settings and turn on multi-display performance mode. This works for me and I DO have two displays hooked to my 8800, I do not know if this makes any difference when running a single display or not, this single option controls a lot of differnt things.

THough sometime recently SL incorporated somthing that slows SL down when it loses focus, so you wonlt get full or even 50/50 framerate on both at the same time. The focussed one will run faster.

With most 'windows' based programmes, you can open more than one instance of the programme by adding a simple 'switch' to the comand line in the shortcut '-multiple'.
I can open 3 instances of SL on a single core system, and asign each one to use an equal amount of GC memory. The use of multiple instances of any programme as graphic intensive as SL, is only really limited by the amount of GC memory you have, system ram behaves dynamically and can reasign chunks to cache, albiet slowing your system down when you overload it.

The multi core issue I believe is to do with cache latencies. Asigning the programe to use one core should not slow your system down, as this will act as a central controller for the thread pipelines.

The poster that said about the virus programme slowing down SL, I believe you are refering to Norton, which you can exclude the SL cache folders from the scans. I don't use Norton and have no issues, but possibly worth considering.

Sometimes it just bes that way... Your last instal may have been corrupted and the update corrected it, that happens a lot if other programs are running when you instal.
