Second life shutting down my modem

Hello everyone.

I have been trying to alter the textures I made for some hair I created for two days now. my machine is above the minium specs, I have a gig of ram etc etc, I can do anything else with ease. but as soon as I start applying or altering textures in the texture menu, my dsl modem literally stops responding and the only thing that will let me connect to the internet again is doing a complete reset on it.

I'm on dsl, I have turned off the power management features, and no matter what, the second I start with altering textures the modem just stops responding until I reset it completely.

Any ideas anybody, this is becoming impossible.

What do you do when you restart your modem?

How do you get going again?

For example, do you also restart your router and/or computer?

Also, you say you can 'do everything else with ease'...So you can go to the SL-WalMart and stare at all the pretty things for sale, they rez, and you don't crash?


And, please tell us, in your SL PREFS, in the NETWORK tab, where is the slider set for the download speed, and (at the bottom of the window) which radio button for upload?

Ok, by saying I restart the modem, that is all I do, restart the modem. full restart as in unplugging it for several minutes and plugging it back in, I don't restart my pc although I have tried it to correct the problem and it does nothing.

I don't crash in second life otherwise whether it be in a huge mall, the ivory tower,a big club/mall etc etc, I have to wait for everything to rez but it never crashes me, nothing ever crashes me until I start messing with the texture sliders when I'm texturing a prim.

my bandwidth setting is currently 200, I read lowering it could help on the forums here but the problem is still there. I"m not sure what you mean by radio button for upload , my disk cache is set to 500 though.

my system has a gig of ram and my video card is a nvidia 6800 gt if that helps any, I downloaded new drivers for it last night as well but its still doing the same thing.

My experience with this has been that it's a temporary problem. I've had it happen..I will ask advice and be told that SL can in no way matter shape or form affect your connectivity, but I've pretty much figured out that's not true

It will do it for a few days for me and then stop. On same said days, I can run SWG, PSP, ANYTHING else but SL and still keep my connectivity. So I recommend just holding out for whatever goofy instability it is to resolve and not rip your eyes out trying to fix it. I doubt it is anything you can do on your end.

Not just a dsl problem, Ive got the same situation with cable.

Same problem here... It makes no difference if I am running SL on my wireless laptop or the host pc (wich is on cable). My computer says I have lost connection...
Could it be that I get no reply from SL or SIM server that my cable/network "thinks" I have no connection?

1 thing is sure, IT SUCKS!

Are any of you using WIRELESS modems?
And if so, could you plug in a regular corded ethernet cable and try again?
A lot of wireless modems are 'flaky' when they try to do something as complex as SL.

SL shouldn't be causing your DSL/Cable modems to disconnect. Chances are, you are having some other kind of problem.

You might check your ISP/telco/cable provider for assistance; if you are actually losing connection, you most likely either have a defective piece of hardware, or perhaps a bad line.

No data being transferred by SL should ever cause a broadband network modem to hard-disconnect like that. The only other possibility is if you are running some kind of connection software on your PC which the modem has to get regular packets from to maintain its connection, and SL is eating up too much CPU to allow it to do that, but I have never heard of that problem with broadband, just cheap crap dialup softmodems.

This sounds exactly like a problem I have on occasion with cable Internet. A defective splitter will cause these symptoms. Try removing any cable splitters if you can and try it. I have also encountered a poorly made router that would disconnect randomly, replaced with a new router and presto- problem went away.

I was having weird chat lag with my wireless setup, type something and 30 seconds later it might show up, sometimes appearing after something typed after it, so everybody reads your out of sequence chat and thinks your drunk. Problem solved after running a hardline out of the router. But the disconnects continue a few times a week, whether running wireless or not.
