This....... is depressing.

SL stopped working again after I lagged out in SL from 6 hours of play.

However, this shed new lights on the problem, it might have something to do with my LAN card.

It is a Broadcom 4401 fast Ethernet card. I just updated it to the newest drivers and it worked, but now when it started to act up again I reinstalled it, yet nothing happend.

This proves that it isn't really my isp, but something about the connection between me and SL

For what it's worth, do you happen to be behind some sort of "broadband router" device? Specifically, if you know that you are passing through some sort of proxy (transparent or otherwise)?

Your symptoms which manifest themselves in the appearance of a firewall problem can also be caused by a malfunctioning NAT, or something like Internet Connection Sharing (bastard NAT).

Also, have you left MTR running while you attempt to connect to make sure that not only do you have connectivity, but you have stable/continuous connectivity?

I also for a while had a problem with a wonderful cable modem which I threw at my local cable provider which would reboot itself any time I crossed a sim in SL (something about the particular configuration of the UDP traffic through it would make it reboot, BRILLIANT!)

My connection is pretty direct. I just have a DSL modem, and that connects to my LAN card, without a router in between.

As for firewalls I am pretty sure I don't have one in between, and I don't really have any idea about proxies.

As for MTR, I do have sustained connectivity.

I would say if you've exhausted all of the things offered in these threads, you probably need to get an ethereal or similar capture and save it and call/email LL support, and work with them (they're going to have you go through all of this again, just humor them and do it). Hopefully they can get you to some "higher up" tech support in LL who can analyze the stream and tell you what is getting dropped/lost.

It may also be a good idea to read through your viewer log after a failed connection attempt and see if the error is obvious there.

hmmm, not all of us are behind a firewall or even deal with a router (I deal wiht a Gateway) so ive always nixed the "firewall" and router /isp scape goat possiblitites out when having trouble with connection. One thing i ran into though simotaneously while I couldnt connect today was my browser and default systems were on the fritz ( i.e. Netscape , Mozilla, NORTON) to name a few were coming up with phantom xxx_\xxx-xxx.exe is corrupt and ureadable ( just at the top of the list of problems) and no SL would not connect so in retaliation i simply removed and deleted the offending programs and set a sytem restore on microsoft programs including the dreaded pop up whore Internet Explorer, and gee, everything is back to normal including log in to SL.

And you know its funny McAffee is associated with Netscape as is AOL, while Norton/Symantec goes hand in hand with Microsoft products.

check your connection defaults as well to see if there are any other issues. Infact they might not present themselves immediately if SL is your most often used program on your system. just a thought, from my experience.

Did you update XP? You should also be up to Directx 9c (latest) XP is actually rather old (2001) and has a long list of updates that have to be installed unless you have the SP2 version. Even then you need to update it.
