after installing my version of secondlife to update, i played it and then reset my computer... upon restart my computer shows the windows startup screen and then the screen goes black... i know the computer is still running because when i type in my computer login password and press enter, I hear the sound from the startup... is there any way to reset my graphics card without using my monitor?

Reseting the graphics card is nigh on impossible. If you want to turn off/restart the PC though:
  1. Press Ctrl+Esc
  2. Press Up
  3. Press Enter
  4. Press Alt+U to turn off or Alt+R to restart

I think you can press the Windows key and R then type "shutdown" and press enter too, but I'm in the middle of stuff and can't check it at the moment.

if windows is flaking out, at startup hit f8 choose safemode, right click on the desktop (assuming after some time it comes up to a crap version of your desktop) choose propertys, goto settings and hit apply,
reboot and quickly reinstall your video drivers or your eyes might bleed.

you of course will need to know the make and model of your card (nvidia is pretty ez with a 1 file install for anything recent, ati and intel make you play model # game (is it a 9200 or a 9200se hmm, sry sarscasim)

Even after a restart? I'd try one of AJs methods to shut down and then unplug it and let it cool off for a while and see what happens after 20 minutes or so..

I can check the status of my computer from here..... the video card is turned OFF...... but I cant do shit about it from here...all I have is a status checker nothing to function on the other side.. just to watch it... it even was nice enough to royally screw me over and switch off my default 16 bit video card so I cant even use the basic one

Eek, it's propper fscked.

I reckon you're gonna have to boot off the Windows CD. You can try running "chkdsk c: /f" on the recovery console (press r when it tells you to) to make sure there's no bad sectors, then try a system restore (sorry, I can't ever remember how to do that) If those don't work you'll probablyhave to rebuild Windows.

Your data should be safe, you just might have to go 'round the houses to get it.

Are you running 98? SL doesn't run on 98 so that could be the source of the problem..

I'd be quite happy to help (got AIM too, just haven't listed it yet 'cause I hardly use it), but I'm just about to go to bed (it's 5:30am here - I should have been asleep hours ago).

If you've tried everything suggested (I realise some of it's a bit complicated and I apologise I don't have time to explain in more detail now) or are in a hurry it's quite easy to install Windows, just put the CD in the drive, reboot and follow the instructions. Whatever you do though, don't format the drive! After that everything in Windows should be reset to default. You'll probably find most of your applications and drivers need reinstalling but you should be able to get your data.

The best thing to do at this point would be to move your data elsewhere and reinstall Windows again, choosing to format the drive this time.
