graphic card issues in new computer

hey ev1, am hoping to find faster help in here then in nvidia forums.

i recently bought a new computer. has smaller graphics card then my old one so i installed the old graphics card in new computer.

ok, so did as directed. by manual. its a 256mb card, but when i open preferences in SL, i still only have option of a 128mb memory video card.

i log into SL and crash.

i have set my bios to auto, since it gives options of intel graph/pci-express/pci graphics

i have a nvidia gforce 5500 fx 256mb

i have directx 9 installed and verified in with dxdiag. (which confirms nvidia 256mb set up)
device manager>display adaptor>shows nvidia gforce 5500
updated the driver from nvidia
control panel>display>settings>advanced>shows nvidia 256mb set up

the one spot (device mgr) in other resources> vga controller needs driver, but this is from a PCI bus1, device 5.....whereas nvidia is PCI bus 2, device 4 (dont know if this is old graphics card, which i removed driver for, so just left it alone)

so question is, why do i still have only 128mb highest option for my video card memory in preferences for SL??

Sounds to me like you're doing all the right things to get this to work. Including drivers and bus/slot assignments.

The latest Nvidia drivers are easy to get at:

I been to nvidia.com and have new driver for it. even uninstalled and uploaded the original ones it came with. this is newer computer, not by far, but has same low settings for preferences, that i had before for SL.
i cant get past "downloading clothing, although ev1 still sees you as normal bleh statement" i press OK and then my mini map goes red. crash.

i must be missing something small here.
and i cant wrap my head around it.

Try dropping the video driver setting from 128 to 64.
Play SL. Let us know what happens. There are (for other cards, instances of this fixing bad behavior)

Then, (yer not gonna like this either), put the original card backin. put its drivers back and see what happens. RUn SL.

If they both work, you're gonna want to know which works better, so try to find an empty sim and do some timing things and set your view distance Faaar to see what happens.

ok sterling, i resorted back to old driver, sl wont even open for it and gives me a warning then a shutdown message that the application is not compatible running on my hardware. this computer came with an ATI Radeon x200 video card 128mb.
i have removed the driver. is probably why it wont even open program.
but the way this system is set up, i need to download from a partitioned HD the recovery cds for this computer.
so i put in the nvidia back in, and put in original driver. (not updated yet) adn signed onto sl no problem, with minimal everything in preferences. but i am not able to walk well at all. bleh.
i have just got a response from nvidia support but they required from me more information on my system. i hope they get back to me today again *crosses fingers* cause i am ten more webpage searches away from buying a new card.

Did you delete ALL video drivers before going to the nvidia sight to DL the newest?

yes mark, that was the first process was to go into add/remove programs and take out hte old driver for the ati radeon.

interestingly enough, there were two slots. one was for my phone line modem. which i dont use cause i have DSL.
so i just took that out and put in my video card in there.
checked all the stuff/installed the driver for the video card (previously was removed)
dxdiag. is fine. display and monitor was found new hardware and just clicked through that successfully (again*)
i log into SL and it still has only 128mb as highest memory for my video card.
bah, so i log into SL and it seems normal now. no crashes at low settings. slowly upping hte settings to where it was, not much higher mind you, but where i was originally.
Tp to a few busy stores to check my stability. and i am not doing so bad now.

all this time it wanted a different slot? silly cause the exact things i did for the *empty available slot* in first place, it did not recognize it, and here it does. (after i remove a phone modem component* which by the way, was not recognized as missing either.
lmfao. grrrrrr that settles it i am going to be starting a computer course this january adn get on the up and up on this.
