Ok ppl I have meet sever in SL who have intel based intergrated video cards. and All suffer issues with the appearance mode at least. For those of you noT aware of what is going on basicall it's the drivers and visdeo core do not know how to interpret what texture goes on what polygons and surfaces etc in SL. So what you get is a patchwork effect happening all over the place kinda like a really bad acid trip.

Solultion? well if you are blessed with a gateway computer and it's recent, it will most likly have a PCI EXPRESS 16 Video slot so go spent the cash for the card. Sorry no AGP in Recent made Gatway Computers. Should you own a Dell or Hp etc... you might ... Might have an agp slot but most basic Dells only have PCI slots. This is normally a write off but I have found a source for some ATI Radion 7000 64Mb PCI Video cards. While they are below the specs of a Radion 8500 they should at least perform better that the intel based card. I can get them my cost no spin for $70.00Cdn shipping will be your cost I do not want to make anything on this at all. Just IM me but if anyone thinks I'm spaming and just trying to make a buck find me a cheaper source and I'll go through them as long as they have stock and can guarantee delivery to me or the buyers.

Regards
Rraven Moonlight

P.S. Should anyone wonder why I'm making this offer it's simple I/we my wife and I enjoy Sl very much and feel it is too an important concept to stand by while ppl are left out.

I unno... all the Dells I've seen recently had PCI Express, but they may not have been entry level machines. On the other hand, I always build my own anyway, so I don't have such issues.

My Dell came with an nVidia 6800 with 256mb on board. So nyah.

It's not Dells. Or Gateways. Or HP. Or any other brand you care to mention. It's simply that 'you get what you pay for'!

Therein lies the problem. While "ran great for years and is still running" says good things about the PC, it says bad things about it's ability to run something like SL.

Why does everyone put down Dell... I have run my Dell for 5 years never any issues, I have played SL for 14 months 15+ hours a day with my Dell...

And when I say 15 hours a day I mean everyday, I do not experiance great deals of lag or rezzing issues. Maybe as the poster said above you get what you pay for, As my system 5 yrs ago was top of the line custom ordered.

Funny thing is my system just barely meets the required specs for SL
1.8
256 RAM
NVidia Geforce 2
Windows Xp Pro
As far as connection DSL sprint (nothing fancy)

I have found no limitations in playing SL in my 14 months in SL.
I have lag in sims with 30 people but can still move and dance at an decent speed.
I rarely post because I've never had problems
maybe I can admit that graphics could be slightly better as I do run the settings such as draw at 64 but thats a comprimise to paying 400.00 for a graphics card and another 400.00 for upgrading to 2megs of ram which my dell will accept currently.

okay enough babble just had to say not all Dell is bad. *smiles*

Oh my LykaObscure Diamond, I fear you misinterpeted my post enterily, I in no way am ranting or putting Dell down. What I am doing is offeringa solution for ppl who have bought the entery level Dell systems like the dimension 2400 "their" entery level systems are good a all their systems are. But to produce the computer for the price they do they are required to go the most economical route possible. Hence some systems you will find will not have pci express or even agp options limits on the max amount of ram supported etc... This happens, but please keep in mind you are compairing your "customed orderd" Dell to the entery level systems the average person can afford. Not every one is like us, my system and my wife's are the same AMD A64 3000+ CPU 1.5Gb Ram 1/2Tb storage
Nvidia Fx5950 with 256Mb Ram and BenQ 23" wide Screen Lcd's.

As I said this is an offer for ppl who find that they are having problems running SL due to their video situation.. I'm sorry if you miss read my post.

My Dell cost me a grand, so I got what i paid for?
I can't run SL now, i'm usin an inspiron 6000
Could somebody take a look at this page and tell me, would i be doin
the right thing if i get the chance to upgrade to the inspiron 9300?
Would that fix my problem?
Or is there anything i can do to this inspiron 6000?

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/inspn?c=ie&cs=iebsdt1&l=en&s=bsd

What can i do to get back in?

Any sugestions greatly appreciated.

Haya Sounds Wondered why you have not been around:)... OK I looked and what I would like to know is what video option did you get with it? caus you are frotunate that Dell offer video options above the base Intel Chip Set. If you can afford it I would go with this option ATI® MOBILITYTM RADEON® X300 with 128MB of dedicated video it's the largest amount of Video ram offered for your laptop and the Ati and Nvidia are the only chip sets SL supports and for good reason.they both offer very fast reliable graphics pipelines and memory refresh rates. I am very aware that being handed an solution that will cost mony may not be what you want to wake up to but right now that is the best one I can offer. Oh a side note load that puppy with as mush system Ram as you can afford you'll thank me later.

I recently acquired a 9300 with the ati radeon x300 video and to my surprise it works really well with SL (well, not currently, but I doubt anything does at the moment!).

The 17" display is brilliant, actually nicer for building than my 19" flat CRT.

And I'm someone who really doesn't like laptops - but I needed something for a business trip and thought I'd try it out with SL...

Word of warning, when I first tried it it crashed every time I moved. ATI had (a month ago) NO updates for the X300. However, I tried Dell support downloads and they did  and it cured the problem completely.

Actually in retrospect I wish I'd paid for the Nvidia 256 upgrade, though I'm pretty happy with the X300, but at the time I wasn't thinking of SL as I didn't seriously expect it to work well anyway.

In summary this is without a doubt the best laptop I have ever tried, it's light, has good battery life, nice keyboard (for a laptop), brilliant display, it's amazingly fast and excellent value for money to boot!
Oh, the trackpad is crap, even by trackpad standards (I loath them!), too small for a start, but a laptop optical mouse is what? £10?

Get one. You won't be disapointed.

PS I normally use a Desktop 3.2Gb P4E with 4Gb and a 256 Nvidia, and the 9300 didn't feel a lot different!

PPS AND I was connecting to SL via the built in wireless card too!

Well basicaly I think it's a good system for office use and multimedia,
but i did get a fair deal o nthe price. So i think i could sell it for what
i paid for it.. considering it's 1300 on their site.

And there's no way for me to put another graphics card on this inspiron,
It's built into the motherboard, unless they can do something about this, i'm screwed.

Here's a list of the system specs:

Your absoulty sure the graphics card can not be removed? On most of the newer Laptops they can be. I would look into it before jumping to conclusions ok. Flip that thing over you should find several access panels on for the CPU, HD, RAM amd most likely the video it will most likely be towasdr the rear of the case to the right as you are looking at the botton. Good luck

Hi,

Well.. that's what i was told when i asked about the graphics card.

Found this on a site:

The Inspiron 6000 is also available with a choice of graphics chipsets. You can either opt for the cheaper and much less capable Intel Media Accelerator 900 GPU which uses up to 128MB of shared memory, or ATI's DirectX 9.0-compatible Mobility Radeon X300 with either 64MB or 128MB of dedicated video memory. The latter of which was used in our test system, along with 128MB of video memory. You should definitely consider the latter if you intend to run games or high-end graphics applications.

Another site:

Thanks to its ATI Radeon Mobility X300 128 MB graphics card, which is an optional upgrade, the Dell Inspiron 6000 in this configuration scores a nice 3DMark03 benchmark of 2536, which is pretty much identical to an older desktop I have with a Radeon 9600 Pro.
