Hey gang,

Support asked me to send my secondlife log file so they could look at my problem.
Since I did, I've been told my graphics card is incompatible with SL.
Well that's a kick in the teeth seems I just bought this new Dell to try SL.

I deleted the old version of the client before upgrading to 1.7
Now I can't log in, reinstalled it 3 times but no go.
So if I decide to upgrade my graphics card I'm welcome to try the trial,
But under a new account, that means they have to delete Sounds Turner.

What I can't understand is why my new system isin't good enough,
It was untill I upgraded, isin't that a bit inconsiderate on the development end?

Fare well friends, it was nice knowin you peeps.

Regards,

E Marsh

Awww that's too bad sounds. What's your graphics card? They do list the minimum requirements here as a safety precaution!

Why would you have to delete your acct if you upgraded your card? Maybe I'm not understanding something...

I don't understand this. I have a Dell Laptop...I think it's a latitude...OLD beast...it runs SL, at about 6fps, but it runs it when I need it to....even since the upgrade.

I am willing to bet it's something else completely.
Good luck.

That's weird Lizbeth,

This is a new system - Dell Laptop - Inspiron 6000, I bought it with SL in mind.
I got another email from support saying..

If you can get a configuration that at least meets our system
requirements, with up to date drivers, Second Life will run on your
computer.

So it could be a configuration problem not requiring a new card? I don't know.
Well I don't know what to do, and haven't the cash to spend on a new graphics
card if all I8 need to do is reset something instead.. dunno.
Not sure what to do here.

Thanks for your responces guys n gurls.

Hey Sounds, is your notebook an inspiron 6000 or an inspiron 6000d?

if it's the 6000d, from what I'm reading the videocard is upgradable (but it's not something I'd recommend DIY'ing for the faint of heart).

You could call Dell Spare Parts USA 1-800-357-3355 ext. 69937
or Dell Spare Parts Canada 1-866-440-3355.

They might even be able to point you in the direction of a local DELL certified repair place that could install it for you.

Hope that's of some help,

Good Luck

Heya,

As far as i'm aware of it's the dell inspiron 6000.
I'm in Ireland btw.. not very technical.
This really sucks.. and i'm not incluing the other works on my mind right now.
What should i say to dell, should i give them the requirements for sl or what.
I'm not that technical that i can scan my system to give you my specs.

Sounds little buddy.. don't give up.. I read over the thread, but I didn't see anything about updating the video drivers.. I suspect you have but on rare occasions new drivers can be a bad thing... Try a driver rollback, go to an older version and see what happens.. I have had to do that in the past.. Call Dell, and well, yell at them but nicely.. They might give u an upgrade credit considering the circumstances..
Don't give up just yet, cus ya know we will miss our Irish chum at the sandbox..

P.S. 1.7 is hell right now you're not missing anything so get fixed and come back in a couple days.. hehehe

Thanks all,

WB G man! hope you're recovering well.

I dunno what drivers i'm lookin for either, remember i'm no tech expert :)
If i call dell should i give them the system requirements for sl or whatever?
This is some pile of crap, why do i need to upgrade a totally new notebook.
I mean.. how can i spend money on something that i don't even know anything about.
Well i was lookin forward to reckin your heads about adobe audition, which i purchased for use in sl... ahhrrrr

It's back to good ol thrustworthy web design for me, at least i can trust my own servers to let me in.

Appreciate your replys..

Later thanks.

I can't play either because of the driver thing.
10-25-2005 16:40
I just purchased my video card about 3 weeks ago and I have been using it with no problems until this freaking update. Now when I try to login I crash during the login however its not telling mt its a graphics problem. I did get in for 3 minutes once I cleared my cache. The funny thing is, I was online for an hour during my lunch hour with no problems. Very Strange! I think we need to wait until they do the next update within a day or so. I am sure there will be one.

Hey Sounds...

I just got bumped from SL and now have to do another update which made me think, perhaps it's something small, stoopid and quirky, try getting in again..

want some cheese with that whine? its the update, n its happening to all of us, relax. it will get fixed like all bugs do. i have a 2d graphics card n SL requires a 3d card, but i can still play, but hey if u wanna get all dramatic about it wish u the best with your impatience for constantly updating software =) maybe you didnt read the TOS when signing up. we all pay but theres nothing saying everything is gonna be perfect all the time, they dont want to have these issues as much as we dont want to have them. any idea the headaches theyre goin through aswell? i know its frustrating, but all ive seen in these posts are new players getting bent out of shape and flying off the handle on the boards and frankly lol i guess this was my breaking point. things will get fixed everyone relax. =D

No i missunderstood, jumped the gun, me account is still active,
I just can't run sl untill i figure this crap out.

Why don't sl have some test that could tell you what you need to upgrade.
I mean, support are telling me my card isin't compatible, and then i'm told
it might be a configuration problem and then again it could be the drivers.

How do i check all my systems specs? sorry that's a stupid question.
Then at least i can try the drivers out.

Thanks Gina for the words of wisdom..
There's 2 choices online, go 2d or interact in 3d.
And i know where i'd rather be working, interacting.
You can do all the web development you like, flash or whatever,
It's not 3D untill you and your associates can walk around and interact with your art.

So dramastic doesn't really fit in this conversation and
impatients would be putting it lightly, could you blame me.

Why don't sl have a live chat on their site for support and also members with issues?

G Man i've installed it 4 times now, not much difference what i do.
Just have to wait n see.

Peace!

So.. should I wait or what? I'm not sure.

Do I need to get new hardware for my new Dell that I got for my SL experience?
Is there software i could install or anything else that will fix this problem?

I don't know

All I can think of is contacting Dell and giving them the system requirements for SL.
If this is a small problem and I go buying new parts that I don't need.

Sounds,

Here is the link for your drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=EN#

To find out what video card you have:

Right Click on blank area of screen and choose properties.
Click Settings Tab and on there click Advanced.
Click the Adapter Tab.
Read what it has there.

To see version of the current video driver:

Click the Properties button on same tab.
Click the Driver Tab.
Read Driver Version and date

You probably have a ATI or Intel card
Read install instructions on download page.

Let me know if you need more info.

For complete details on the system currently running on your machine I use a free product called Belarc Advisor. It's a simple download and it scans your machine for all its pieces and parts, including driver version and date last upgrades. This could be an easy, concise, sollution to your knowledge problem on that laptop.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
" The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, including Microsoft Hotfixes, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server."

Hope this helps

Heya Raster how's tricks..

I rang dell today and as usual their support wasn't the best, at first..
Actually i was on hold for 15 minutes every time i rang and in the end
got through to India!!! but that was cool they have some good peeps..
They are contacting the sales person i bought it from in Ireland!! tomorrow.
I gave them a run down on the problem and they had a look at the system
requirements for SL.... don't think my card has anything to do with SL's requirements.
My dell can't have a new card put in coz it's built into the motherboard.

Rite..
I did a check and here's what i found;

Adapter Type:

Chip type - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family

Adapter Info:

DAC type - Internal
Memory size - 128 MB
Adapter string - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset
Bios Info - Intel Video BIOS

And in that properties tab:

Driver date - 23-01-2005
Driver Version - 6.14.10.4020

I'm on that dell downloads page now.. i was here last nite but didn't
know which to download and downloaded that ATI under Video Drivers..
But obviously that wouldn't run.. am i in the right place should i try
That intel graphics video - under Video Drivers?

Well thanks for the help man, this is as far as i can go for now.
Seems the next inspiron up has the card i need, maybe dell will help.

Nice to hear from ya, maybe i'll be back i na few weeks lol
If i have to i'll buy a new system.

Back to building sites for now.. i'm in the chat over at gs-world.. how boring!
No my site's not boring.. but 2d is!!
I can't wait to get back to my 3D adventures and look forward to a good ol battle.

Peace out!

Ugh, you're right ATI driver will not work for you as it is mobile intel chipset. Pretty sure SL doesn't support that at all. :(

May not need new system. As you said it worked before. Hopefully Dell has some answers for you.

As for the driver, you should try it sence the one you have was made in January 2005 and the current one is dated 8/25/2005. And yes, you need the Intel driver.

Woozie had that problem with her computer when we first sign on to SL. I had to update her driver and all was fine.

Anyway its worth a try.

Oh, and a after thought. you should tell the Lindens not to disqualify your pay because you did not log in for 5 min during a week if you can't get on. Not your fault and you should still get paid! Rules say if you do not log on for at least 5 min during the week you don't get paid for that week. Make sure you have that on record that it was their fault you can not get on.

Hope to see ya soon.
