Okay so I have been without second life for almost three weeks now, and I think it's been too long. I have tried all the following hints, and nothing worked. Here is what I have done:

I was told it may have been my router, and to reset it, I couldn't figure out how to reset it, so I just unhooked it, and connected my modem directly to my computer. That didn't help.

I am using my home computer, the one I have been using to play second life for about a year, so the game is not being blocked.

My firewall is set to let second life play, and it still dose not, I was told to try with my firewall off, I did that, and it does not work.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled my modem as well as second life sevral times, I have run virus scans, as well as my ad-aware sevral times.

Now the problem occured when:
My power was taken out for a week as a result of the hurricane. Once it came back on, secondlife did not work. I know this has somthing to do with it, because I was playing second life when the power went out.

Once again the message I am recieving is: "Unable to find the server domain name. This could be the result of a lost network connection or a server problem. Please try again in a few minutes..."

Willow mentioned in my other thread that she had a similar problem and it had somthing to do with her port numbers, I am no pro when it comes to computers, so I don't know what I would do to see if that is the case. Please please please I am begging, if anyone knows what I should do, I would really appreciate it. I have done all I know, and now going on three weeks with no second life, is getting to be too much.

Hi Camie,

Dang...a hurricane and then 3 weeks without SL - that has to suck. Let's see if we can get you back and running.

I read this post and your other thread, but I need some more information to help you.

1) You're running Ad-Aware, so you're running Windows. What version do you have? And do you have all the updates and service packs?

2) I'm assuming that you can access the Internet normally (webpages, email, etc)?

3) How long do you wait before closing out the SL client after receiving the error message? I've noticed that sometimes after a client update, I get the same message and have to sit there for a bit for it to finally go through.

Also, can you try the following:

1) Go to Start > Run..., and in the box type 'CMD' (without the quotes).

2) That should bring up a nasty ol' DOS box. Yay for DOS!

3) At the DOS prompt, type 'ping sim530.agni.lindenlab.com' (again, without the quotes).

4) You should see something that looks like the attached image below. If not, there may be a problem with your ISP's Domain Name Servers, although I don't see why they would block Linden Lab's machines.

Thank you so much for trying to help me.

I am running windows XP, hmm updates and service packs? I think I have all my updates up to date.

Yes my internet connection works as it always has, I can surf the web, do everything I could before this happned.

When I try to run second life. I get stuck at Finding domain name or whatever, then about 10 seconds go by and I get the warning and it goes back to the sign in screen.

And last thing, I tried to do the CMD thing, but when I put the:ping sim530.agni.lindenlab.com nothing happens!! :(

Camie, have you tried calling your ISP for help? Sometimes they can do quite a bit for you.

Hi Camie,

Ok, it sounds like 'ping.exe' is being blocked by your firewall. Give it another try with your firewall disabled and see if you get a response or a message like 'Unknown host ...'.

Are you using Window's built-in firewall, an alternative firewall, or...*shudder* both?

In response to Lee Linden's post in your original thread I saw that you had disabled both your firewall and internet security (which sounds to me like a second firewall). Things can get pretty goofy if you're running through 2 firewalls, and I believe that might be what's happening here. An uninstall/reinstall of your internet security program may help, particularly if it's the brand I am thinking of.

No, I don't understand why it worked fine before and not now, but sometimes computers are like that...

And yes, as Lo pointed out, your ISP can be very helpful in these situations. Individual results may vary, and you may have to make a couple of calls to find a sympathetic ear.

Camie,

It might be possible that your router was reset somehow. You will need to find out how to set the right port mapping for second life.

As always, different sources will tell you different things. These are the open ports which work for me:-

443 TCP
12035 UDP
12036 UDP
1300 - 13050 UDP

It won't do any harm though if you open more ports than necessary (eg. 12000 - 12050 TCP&UDP)

If you don't know how to do this, then try to have a look at your router's manual. It should be on your hard drive somewhere, or failing that on the installation CD. If you can't find it, look it up on the web. If that doesn't work, then you will need to ask someone with more technical know-how than I have (unless you have a D-Link router, then you can ask me. :)

PS: A word of warning. Never reset your router unless you have *all* the connection details that the router requires. If you have a router, it is always helpful to have all these details on a piece of paper in some safe place.

Sorry - I see I am guilty of what drives me mad with other forum posters - not reading the original posting.

Best of luck, and hope that someone can help you.

Have you tried without your router AND firewall all at the same time?

Also have you tried clearing you cache (sorry, have to ask)

I take it you've restarted your PC..

Ok try this..

    Disable your router and firewall

    Clear your SL cache

    Uninstall SL

    Restart your PC

Install SL again from the website

And sign in by clicking here instead of clicking the SL icon.

Sorry this must suck :(

(Edited to add more steps)

Just to make sure, you have downloaded the latest version of Second Life and installed that?

Also try this at the CMD dos window

tracert ping sim530.agni.lindenlab.com

and see how far you get without it stopping, that should point out where the problem lies.

You could try taking your computer to someone else's place and seeing if it will work there, and getting someone to bring their computer over to your place and seeing if that will work.
