Yeah elka!!! me too!!

I've owned several graphics tablets, but I still prefer my mouse. Yes, I know there are advantages, including levels of pressure, etc. but I just like my mouse and I've learned to do what I want with it. And I am VERY picky about detail, so I'm not cutting corners. All wrinkles and shading, even a bow tie knot, were done with my mouse.

Some say using a mouse is like drawing with a potato. Maybe so, but I like my potato!!!! :)

Really, Blaze?? Bowties?? Wow.

I didn't think things such as flaring collars, pockets, zippers, and bowties would be possible without a wambat..woompad..wacom..that thing. To be sure, I can't fathom how to do anything without that and believe me I've tried everything.

GRRRR...

This is not working for me either. I can't get my traced image to line up at all with the template. Not a clue what to do now.

Athene, did you follow the steps I outlined in post #14 of this thread? That should make the drawing align with the UVs without a hitch. Let me know.

There's no reason why you can't get awesome at drawing with a mouse :) I've been drawing on a computer ever since I found the early equivalent of MSPaint (can't even remember what it was I did use) and though I wouldn't say I was awesome, I'm certainly more comfortable with a mouse than a GT and can make perfectly smooth, precise marks and lines with one. Admittedly the tablet is great for pressure shading and the like, but it takes me so long to get the hang of it when I've been using the mouse, I haven't bothered to reinstall it for the past... year?! I can do everything I need to with the mouse. I'm more familiar now with shading using layer and brush opacity than pressure anyhow.

I don't have a single problem with using graphics tablets, but folk shouldn't worry that they don't have one. Toys and tools are great at what they're great at, but that doesn't mean something else can't be just as good if you use it well enough.

(Oh, and in my experience, affordable GTs are pap. That may have changed now, but the Wacom I was able to afford is not the most awesome piece of kit in the world. I'm pretty serious about my digital art but still can't justify paying for a 'decent' one. I wouldn't even worry about it unless you're MADLY serious about digital art and plan to buy your next house from the proceeds of your latest masterpiece...)

No, I didn't. Sadly, I printed out the templates at my mothers house, as I lack a printer. And she doesn't have photoshop.

Could it be the templates I'm using, or just PS being fudgy?

If the templates don't have the "edges" clearly shown, it will be very difficult to get them to line up correctly. This is because printers don't always print things "square," and because scanners don't always scan things "square," either.

I'm not saying it's impossible to get them to line up without knowing where the edges are; but it's very difficult. With the edges, though, it's easy.

Matching is critical, since these are maps, not "templates", (no matter what they are usually called.) SL will make the map perfectly square, and then put whatever is at the point with co-ordinates 25.642% from the left and 76.6457% from the bottom in the middle of the chest, whether or not that point looks like it should be the middle of the chest to a human viewing it.

So, if your mother's house isn't too far away, you might want to print out another copy, with the edges, and use a light table or window or something to draw the egdes on the one you've drawn your clothing on, and re-scan it. Since you're using the same printer and same scanner, those two should match, anyway.

Hi Robin.

May I call you Master? :D

I'm not quite sure what you mean bu 'edges', I'm sorry.

How I'm doing it now is I lay tracing paper over the printed out template. I outline the edge of the template 'forms' themselves with pencil, then sketch in the shape of the garment. After that scan, try and align, scream obscenities out the window to make my landlord blush when it doesn't work. :D

Umm, by edges, I mean the edges of the map, which are the edges of the image in your graphics program.

The things outlined in Magenta in the image below.

They are critical, as I may have said before, because they are actually the end points of the U and V axis, as shown. The 0,0 point on the map is the lower left, the 1,1 the upper right, and so on.

So, if you also put lines for those edges on your paper, then you will be able to use them to match the scan to the edge of the image in Photoshop, when you are putting it back in. This is especially important for UV Maps, but it also helps whenever you are trying to do that kind of matching.
