I want to get into Tatoo making somewhat....but what I would really like to do is to see how it looks on MY avatar. Is there any way that I can download my outfit and/or personal avatar FROM SL to my pc?

No. My suggestion use a screen capper.

Put the tattoos you create into the SL character folder and replace the head_color.tga, upperbody_color.tga, and lowerbody_color.tga files, or just the body area you have tattoos applied on. That will allow you to preview the tattoos on your avatar inside SL. Remember to back up the original files there, otherwise you will need to reinstall the SL client. You can always download SLCP.exe too from the stickies at the top of this list, but that won't get you your in-world shape for a preview. Your choice. Either way costs nothing.

I have SLCP... a wonderful program and very useful.... it's just that the tattoo I want to design right now if for MY avatar... and I would like to see how the colours go with my current appearance..

and the preview texture feature of the uploader isn't very useful, as it only shows the texture in shape, no body or anything...

One word - AVpainter. I use this a lot. Search for it inworld! I think it's Chipootle Designs. Will cost you some lindens but totally worth it.

I wasn't talking about the built in previewer. I was refering to replacing the color layers in the client character folder. Anything skin tight, like a tattoo, will display perfectly accurately inside SL on YOUR avatar with this preview method. Take a look at the skin examples I have posted in this thread (/53/27/183311/1.html). None of those skins have been uploaded. They are preview textures sitting in the character folder on my hard drive!

I think Thunderclap is referring to a screen capture application.

I've never used AVpainter. I've never really felt the need for anything more than a simple preview method. I edit in Photoshop and preview on my full size avatar with my shape of choice. No muss, no fuss. If SL is down, I use SLCP or the preview grid. I'd be interested to hear what AVpainter can do incase I'm missing out on something.

I find AvPainter to be a better previewer than SLCP. SLCP occasionally refuses to render the alpha parts correctly, and the window can't be resized.

Just recently I used AvPainter to rough out a new shirt design (it's a paint program as well as a previewer). I found this *so* much easier than trying to do it in Photoshop. Piece of cake to draw rounded edges by drawing straight tangents on a curved surface using either the brush or the eraser. No guessing on the 2d-to-3d translation. Instead of just roughing it out, as I intended, I instead was able to get a pixel-accurate shape out of the thing in reasonable time, even through the draw tools are crude.

But even as a previewer it's very cool and worth the price.

The client character folder trick looks interesting. Will have to try that.

Yes, I was refering to a screen capture aplication. I have never used avpainter because it refused to function on my system. I use standard windows xp and video card was top of the line 2 years ago.

So, I will have to agree with the consenous.
