a worthy thread to bump again

i like the offset approach. I've been doing it by copying the top edge of my image, flipping it vertically, bringing it down to the bottom and then using the clone tool to mesh the merged layers... then doing the same for the horizontal edges... but the offset approach is smarter.

I have been using a variant of the displacement method since the early days of the web to make background images. I never thought to revisit this to make quick seamless of existing textures. Great work Nam!

Full Version
11-09-2005 22:21
Hello, I am new to this and wonder if the Full version of Adobe Photoshop is required. It is very expensive and I am a novice editor.

Hopefully no one will "flame" me because of this Stupid question. I am not sure of the differences between versions.

The best seamless plugin I found was this...
11-09-2005 22:44
Simple its brand name is.

Its gives you i think '7' different ways to create seamless...one is the offset option another is the quater tiling which I suspect you then do what Nam did with hers but theres also 5 complete seamless actions which require you to do nothing else.

One is that 'blur' option also featured here which is ok for some things but not on bricks or anything with clear lines and definations

anyhoo check it out theres pics on the link showing you the options

For what its worth, I bought a copy of photoshop 7 off ebay for 5 GBP ( yes really)
The CDs I got werent orginal looked like hed bought versions 6 at one point and updated it as I had to load version 6 first then update it with the reg key that was in one of the folders.

( OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!? was a while)

I only bought it as a back up incase I lost my original CD id be lost without photoshop its my whole SL business down the drain but much to my delight it was a seperate version so now I have it on the downstairs PC too :)

Ebay would be my advise just be careful you dont buy a 'copy' not that it would offend me but it might you, check the feedback of the seller for a feeling on their credibilty

Offset has been in PS since version 1.0. It is one of the simplest filters to program and I believe is an example in Adobe's filter factory. I don't use any PS light products, so I can't say what's in them. Ranma, I would be surprised if you could not do this in whatever image editor you work with. Certainly you can do this in Gimp, you probably don't even need the Gimpshop plug-in. Gimp is Free, by the way.

Of the many ways to make seamless tiles, perhaps THIS is the easiest and most versitile....

http://www.redfieldplugins.com/filterSeamlessWorkshop.htm

...and it's free =^_^=

OK, I never saw this post either. Can anyone package this as a zip file and not .exe (for us poor mac users???)

Thanks

Thanks SO much I always wondered how those texture places figured out seamless textures--this is SO easy. I already made my own black stained wood floor!!! :)

worked like a charm!!!

So does anyone have any tips easier than manual painting on eliminating lighting inconsistancies when creating textures? I've tried the high pass method (detailed at http://www.pixelperfectdigital.com/portal/publish/printer_20.php if you want to read more) and though it does create a consistant lighting it does not however preserve colors. This works extremely well with things like concrete which are generally grey, or single colored fabric cloth which is generally whatever color the fabric is, but it does not work with multicolored fabrics.

I've also toyed with creating gradiants that which can darken or lighten particular lighting directions with mixxed results as light is not always perfect in its direction or gradiant across the surface of something.

Hehe, too funny!

Unfortunately, I'm mobile at the moment, and don't have those files to put back up there. I wonder if that was LL's doing, or if the forums are getting hacked again!?

I can fix it on my end after the 4th of July, but not before :(

I've found that if I'm using an image that is close to, but not exactly, tile-able, the ImageReady "TileMaker" filter works pretty well (included in PS 7). It has saved me a lot of time.

Seamless tiles and Paint Shop Pro
05-08-2007 14:06
In case someone uses Paint Shop Pro, here is the filter to effectively do what this main post can do in PhotoShop. I havent tested or tried it yet and will do so when I get home from work. I just wanted to provide an potential alternate method.

From: 3. I then proceed to sample out the hard lines using the "Rubber Stamp" tool. In the result below the little circle in the image is the "Rubber Stamp" brush shape in the process of sampling another part of the image. If you look to the right and up just a bit, you will see the area that is being sampled.

Can anyone not as clueless as me explain how to find the Rubber Stamp on PS??

It's also known as the clone tool. It's a default tool on the tool palette that looks like a rubber stamp. You really can't miss it.

aaaaaaahhh yes the clone tool :) Thanks Chip

I do have another question: I just tried to use Seamless workshop from Redfield, and after creating a tile using their guidelines...

Getting Started:

1 For easy tile cropping use an image on a layer, not on a background.
2 Run Seamless Workshop. Press [R] button to reset all sliders.
3 Use Tile Edge and Tile Wrapping sliders first to make a tile.
4 With help of Blending sliders make the seems less visible. Be careful, strong blending reduces "realistic value" of a picture.
5 On a final stage select Single Tile box and use Tile Shift sliders to align the tile.
6 Use [Pattern] button to make a filled pattern, or [Tile] button to produce single tile.
7 After applying [Tile] button just select a layer transparency and crop the transparent area. Save a tile using desirable file format. It is a good idea to record an action to automate the tile saving process.

...whenever I use the offset filter on the end result, it still divides the image in 4, which I understand is BAD *re-sighs*. I suppose I do need to keep on trying to masterize PS right?

Mind you I just managed to create my first seamless texture using the rubber stamp thanks Chip!

Just want to add that these techniques also work fine in the GIMP.

The offset trasnform in is the layer menu.

There are also three Plug-ins that use different techniques to make a texture seamless.

i am a total amateur, but you can see some of my textures at

There is a free plug-in our there called "Simpletile" look it up in Google if you guys want to download it. I used this all of the time to create tiling textures from photos or to create my own.

Another - not free, plug-in is "imagesynth" From what I can tell it does a fantastic job for only US$100.

I posted some more seamless tiles to

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7662912@N06/sets/72157600270392611/

They are all made with GIMP using various plug-ins, and start with that gory piece of rock that heads this thread.

GIMP has several plug-ins for this.

Make Seamless: Automates the overlay and transparency technique.

Texturize: sophisticated, analyzes the image, and then redraws a tileable version.

resynthesize: A different algorithm that redraws a new image that has the same elements as the original, but is tileable. It has other features, too.
