Looking to start a little designing.

Which one is good enough?

Do I need the current version, if only using it for SL?

If not, what version of each, will work?

Thanks for the advice.

IMHO, Paint Shop Pro does 90% of what Photoshop does for 10% of the price.

YOU figure it out.

Money isn't really a problem

It isn't the $$, just no sense in spending $500 on something that I don't need.

If Paintshop, will do the job, then what version is adequate?

Latest or older?

Its really a matter of personal prefrence.

However, if your looking at PaintShop Pro, the newer versions are best, my personal favorites are 7, 8 & 9. I use all three together, lol.

paintshop pro is better if u wanna do straight editing and know a little what ur doing its a bit tougher to use but if u learn it it will lead to slightly better results ive found after using both psp and ps i find that ps has some nicer features but thats if ur making logos and stuff. Psp doesnt have some selection tools that make photoshop easier and those tools are tricky in the first place. for ease of use id go with photoshop for results and better editing id go with paintshop pro totally up to you. Please Note here after as well that i give private lessons on the basics as opposed to a tutorial 1 on 1 for 250L one time fee i will provide a tattoo as well for u to train on and advise them as a small start for clothing making anyway... it includes lessons and answers to future questions if interested you may contact me in game which i advise anyway to talk to me about this post i may be able to clear some things up talking to u and understanding you urself then i can reccomend a program for u ^^. take care !!!

I personally prefer Corel Photopaint to Paint-shop Pro, Photoshop and Gimp.

For SL, I think the way Corel Photopaint handles alpha channels is much much easier to work with than any of the other choices.

If you are a student, or know a student, you can get a copy of the entire Corel Draw Suite (current version) for a hundred bucks.

If you don't want to spend any money, Gimp is probably the way to go :)

i use the 3 also, usually the newest version is best to get, and try to get the complete package (theres differences tween Photoshop, Photoshop CS,Photoshop Lite for example)

I personally use

The Gimp 2 (.2.10 windows)
Adobe Photoshop 7
PaintShop Pro 6 (i think they up to 9 or 10 now, psp 6 is perfect for certian types of computer graphics, the newer versions have more photoshop like stuff)

Corel Photo-Paint has one serious drawback, though -- it can't save 32 bit TGA files, so far as I have been able to tell. So you can make lovely pictures with alpha, but you can't get them into Second Life! If you have found a way, PLEASE let me know...

Kurt, I admit that I've never tried PSP (I can't; I'm on a Mac,) and I've never successfully gotten the GIMP to run either (ditto, because it doesn't actually run on the Mac, it runs on an emulator that gives me no end of grief.)

But if money is no problem, then I'd recommend PS, mostly because there's a whole lot more in the way of support and tutorials, and, if you decide that you like making textures, and want to sell them in places other than SL, you'll find that your options are far more open if you have PS. It really is the industry standard.

Besides, I can tell you how to do anything in PS, and I can't say a word if you're using PSP or the GIMP. :D

(joke, of course. I mean, it's true; but I am just joking. :D)

Gimp.app is the best Gimp package to install on the Mac - it does everything itself. All you need is X11 from your install discs, then install Gimp.app, and you can click on it (or drag images onto it) and it will open it all itself.

http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/

The problem with Gimp on OS X is that all the shortcuts are CTRL+(x) rather than Apple+(x), which is annoying. Also, you can't take advantage of things like shared clipboards and print menus. But for creating graphics it's got everything that you need for SL.

The Windows version I think is great.

That's what I love about Corel Photo-paint for SL. It's soooo easy to do 32-bit TGA's :) And not just alpha-cutouts, you can do alpha gradients just as easily :)

Okay, suppose you have an object on your canvas.
Mask->Create Mask->From Object

That's it! Now all you do is export it!
File->Export [yourtexture.tga]

Voila :)

I have only ever used PaintShop Pro 9. I never knew a thing about designing before i bought it, and it has been relativly simple to learn. Its pretty self explanitory.

From talking to PhotoShop users,it seems their program does more, but its harder to master.

Francis, how well does it handle plugins and stuff?

It's that easy with Photoshop, too. :D

Say you have an image.
Hold down Command/ctrl, click on the thumbnail, Select > Save Selection. That's it!

Then just save it.
File > Save As and choose Targa from the list.

Easy as Pi!:D (Or even easier. Pi can be a pain.)

Thanks, Ordinal. My problem has always been getting X11 to run. Basically, it won't. Not even on a brand new machine, with nothing else installed at all except the System (OS 10.3.something, afraid I don't remember what. It was a year ago now.)

All I got, when I tried, was a blank black window and a spinning beach ball. After a while, I gave up and Force Quit, only to find that the whole computer was now messed up, and all kinds of weirdness was happening. At that point, I reformatted the disk, since I didn't have anything else on it anyway.

Today, with tons of stuff on there, most of which is backed up, I'm not about to try. Not when I have Photoshop and have no problems at all running it.

But thanks, anyway.

(I would guess it's a bad install disk, and it might be. But I had other problems trying to run X11 on my old Mac, too, and the one before that. So maybe I'm doing something wrong. Or maybe the X11 Gods just hate me. :D )

You're right, that works! Though it's Save As in my version; there is no export menu in Photo-Paint 11.

What DOESN'T work is creating an alpha channel and then trying to save a 32-bit TGA. Photo-Paint says "alpha channels cannot be saved in this format". So you can't effectively use any of the Photoshop templates with alpha, because they're all done that way, and I haven't found a way to turn an existing alpha channel into a mask.
