Does anybody have any information on an "Enable Clothing Layers" feature for the Emerald Viewer? All I know is the feature appeared in one of the recent updates (not the latest) of the viewer, but was pulled for some reason according to this thread...

While it was available did anyone play with it? Is it just another feature for "Clothing Layer Protection", or does it do more? It was hinted that it might somehow magically add new clothing texture layers to the avatar, but I can't see how that would work without server side integration. If it is just a handy tool for compositing textures like what one can already do in Photoshop then that makes sense, but that is no big deal. On the other hand, if it somehow allows additional layers to be embedded in assets that can be sold and distributed inside SL then we are talking about a whole new (rather significant) ball of wax. So... what is this (im)possible viewer feature, or is it all just hear/say?

I thought it was the clothing layer protection but I'm not sure.

From their forums...

"It is an unfinished feature you cannot use yet.
It has been included by mistake in this release."

Wow, a veritable mountain of information!

This is not a dig at you Casper. I just figured someone would have messed with this before it was pulled. Oh well... I guess I'll just wait to see what pops up in the next release.

I didn't take it as a dig, just wish they would have posted more info ie: what they "intend" to use it for etc. Guess we'll have to wait and see :)

There are 255 slots for wearables server-side :P

I'm not sure how this is relevant.

There are still the same amount of texture slots per clothing/skin asset available to the public that there were six years ago. Even though Linden Lab holds the server code, and has said they are "looking into the feasibility" of adding new clothing texture layers, I no longer look to them for any kind of fix that would give creators access to additional clothing/tattoo layers. Any time I hear of a third party feature that promises to alleviate that bottleneck, my ears perk up. The Emerald viewer has a track record of fixing or adding features that the general public finds very important (i.e. free texture previews and improved asset management). As such, my attention has recently shifted more towards what is happening with this open source viewer.
