Just remember that a lot of what you find in Internet searches may be copyrighted images. Your best bet is to go to a commercial web site that clearly states the textures may be reused for 3D renders and other derivitive works. Do a google search on Free Textures, as a starting point, and read the fine print.

Another consideration is that even if you find the texture you want free on the Internet, you still have to pay L$10 to upload it into SL. And it usually won't be seamless or tilable, unless you fiddle with it first in Photoshop.

A texture store like the one I work for offers textures that are usually seamless, tileble, and copyright-free, for L$30 or so per texture. When you consider the value of your time, and how long you might have to search the net and fiddle with what you find there, the textures that we sell are a pretty fair bargain, in my opinion.

Yes there are A LOT of great texture stores in SL and all of them have full perms on them, but this goes back to the Feature Suggestion thread about bulk downloading of textures for people who want to use those textures in PS. So in essence, unless you are just looking for one or 2 textures specifically, you're still "up a creek"

I'll also point out that if you look around near the various Sandboxes in SL, or at places like Yadni's Junkyard, which offer free or nearly free content aimed at newbies, you can get a bunch of free textures that are already in-world and available to use. So, for example, if you're looking to texture a prim that you created with a texture like gift wrap, you just might find what you need there, for free. Or for maybe L$1 for a box containing 250 random textures.

Before I seriously got into creating my own textures, I found a number of useful ones in the freebie boxes. I had to weed through a lot that I'll probably never ever use, but there were a few gems out there.

It depends a lot on what you want to do with the textures. The Library section of your inventory has a lot of free textures in it. But these are mostly for making things like houses and the like out of prims, or for texturing landscaped areas if you're a landowner. Not much there if you're looking to texture clothing realisticly. Textures that are not specificly set up for use with the clothing in SL can be applied to clothes, using the Appearance dialog. But the results, while better than stark white 'long-johns', leave a lot to be desired.

If you are trying to apply a texture to the clothing templates using Photoshop, then you need textures that are already out on your computer, ready to use in Photoshop or whatever your graphics application. You can export any full-permissions texture that you own from SL to your computer, and it costs nothing to do that. Once you have made it into clothing by fitting it to the clothing templates, it will cost you L$10 to import your altered texture back into SL.

I've bumped this thread back up to the top. It may be of help.
