Look under Downloads -> Guides and Tutorials. There are also some textures and clothing under Downloads -> Textures and Extras.

Motion seconded :D

Some wishlist items:

1. The upper body template's background and overlay textures need to reveal the correct positioning of anatomical features (i.e., nipples, belly button). This would be a huge help when skinning.

2. The hair template is just plain baffling. How about some user guides to go with the templates?

3. An overlay layer that pinpoints critical seams.

The anatomical positioning would help with tattoo placement and clothing cutouts also.

Yes to fixing the upper body template so the front and back of the body are the same size!

Yes to showing anatomical features in a layer!

Yes to doing something with the hair template! Heh, I know, vague, but I just don't get them a bit!

Yes to a better face template! Half of the small things like eyelashes are almost completely impossible to figure out without *tons* of trial and error.

Please Lindens? Doesn't have to be quick, but just say you'll do it sometime! Please? :D

Having designed many many tops I am really against changing the layout of the UV map as this would ruin everything I've done, not to mention everything that many other designers have done.

Yes changing them at this point is very bad.. Happened back aroudn 1.1 and everyone lost the crotches of shorts and panties.

And there is alot more clothiers then there was.

I think just having an out of game previewer would help alot more. I mean I am suprised someone hasn't just made one. You have your basic body form where you can see where things come together. It is kinda annoying going back and forth in the game. I don't mind the paying L$10 but it is just annoying.

It would be nice thought if they could make new templates in addition to the old ones. Aside from the fronts and backs of shirts being off - the undersleeve on the templates is longer than the outersleeve which makes lining up the sleeve seams on patterns a nightmare.

You can do that to some extent when you upload the texture, before you click upload, select the body part that its supposed to be applied to and rotate to see if there are any gross misalignments. Its not perfect, but its saved me a ton of $L in uploads.

but the preview doesnt really help when making jackets, or outfits where the pants, shirt and skirt all need to be lined up :/. Im all for a model preview. Where you can save your inworld model, and uplaod it to the previewer and add the textures to it. Or just have some basic Male and Femal models in it. Shouldnt be to hard to make as long as LL would be able to provide a copy of the models for a programmer to makethe previewer.

I'd be all up for a model preview myself... "Dresses with patterns" and similar types of clothes are currently quite tricky to make; sure I can go and blow 50 or 100 L$ on failed pattern alignments until I get it right, but it's a nightmare in itself no matter what. It'd be so much more convenient to be able to preview the textures on a full model.

Maybe this should take the way of the Feature Suggestions forums? Or is it a way too specific idea?...

I dont see updating the templates as equal to changing the avatar mesh.

Some designers have made tools to help with this. Some sell them and some give them away. If someome were willing to give theirs away, maybe they should contact the developers and offer them up for the website.

If you are selling them, post where they are available and for how much.

I think the templates they give are about as good as you can get with the current UV map, if they do change the map I'm guessing they'd have it opitional, like you can use AV 1.0 or 2.0 and such. For those looking for nipple placement, use the UV map layer(I think it's still in the template)or go into the SL folder then into the character and open the bump_upperbody_base.tga file( think) copy and paste that into a new layer if you want belly button alignment

a modeler programme would be an excellent addition, I'm sure some of our tecchy residents could manage to make it, if LL's could authorise some help...:))) I'd be happy to buy one.....

Well if the Lindens were to post or send me a vertext UV map for the canonical body templates that they have on the download page, it would be relatively simple task to hack together an offline viewer. All I'd need is a list of coords normalized in some obvious way along with the corresponding UVs.

I could guess them based off the 2D maps and making some reasonable inferences about the size and shape of the body, but it would sure be better if we could get the ACTUAL values <hint, hint>

Anybody? Anybody>

I wouldn't hold your breath :P I've been doing it since 0.3.0 one time I did try to do it myself, I managed to get a 3d version of the UV on the chest together but it was still flat along the z-axis, never got around to making it into a usable av, but it could still be done, the best was would be to get it into Gmax(free version of 3d studio) so that people could use it for texture preview, or an external model viewer if someone really wanted to :)

I just want the seam fixed between shirt and pants -- the shirt uv map doesn't quite cover the upper torso so something meant to be seamless will have hairline cracks in it right where it meets the pants (jackets are fine).

--

As a side note I just installed the Sims 2 Body Shop and the first thing I thought was, "wow this would be nice if we had something like this for previewing clothes/skins in SL." You can actually edit a skin file, save it, and hit refresh in the viewer to view your changes--so easy.

If LL doesn't have the time/money to make an offline viewer happen, I say why not let the community make one. There is certainly a precedent for high quality, community-driven tools out there. And there's no lack of talented people in the SL community. :)

Really? I've never had this problem...
I do think it's possible for the community to do :), just need people to do it..even the morph targets as well, would take a lot of work but it could be done.

As I said, the preview code is the easy bit (well easyish), the problem is that without a list of coords and UVs its going to be difficult to get a correct preview

My main issue with the template for the upper body is that when making ringer shirts the collar is off from front to back...I would guess someone remade there template and fixed that...if anyone has a template with that fixed I am willing to buy it for a far price.
