Does the new PNG Transparencies rid that ugly alpha channel bug with textures behind one another coming in front?

From: Robustus Hax Does the new PNG Transparencies rid that ugly alpha channel bug with textures behind one another coming in front? Not at all. That glitch has nothing to do with file formats. It's just a part of how OpenGL works. Every OpenGL application has it, from video games to high end 3D modeling applications costing thousands of dollars. Where there's transparency, there are sorting issues. And there's a long and complicated debate about whether or not the glitch should even be "fixed" at all, as to do so would break a lot of existing content and established workflow habits. It's a big topic. Anyway, even if it were a file format thing (which I repeat, it's not), it wouldn't make any difference. As has been explained here at least half a dozen times already, all textures in SL are JPEG2000's. They can start out on your own hard drive as TGA's or PNG's, but as soon as you hit the upload button, SL copies the image to a JPEG2000 and sends it to the server. Your actual source file never gets uploaded.

From: Peekay Semyorka Just a comment on PNG's transparency support.
I could be wrong, but I think Peekay is the guy who sent the PNG upload patch to LL inb the first place.

lower file sizes?

uploading .PNG's is sounding quite promising...
A lot of my clothing is detail heavy with embroideries n brocade... i use a mix of 1024x1024 and 512x512 depending upon the texture... i have seenbakign/rezzing problems associated with the 1024px so i avoid it mostly... though i hate the loss of detail i usually work in a higher fize, lower it whn i save, apply an 'unsharp mask' , or 'highpass' filter- it improves the texture a bit.
i have noticed that the .PNG file is way smaller in size, than the .TGA...a 4mb .TGA file saves as 350kb .PNG for one of my halter tops... 1024x1024-150dpi. Thats a HUGE diff
is der neway to find out wots the file size when SL converts it to JPEG2000? i dont think the size on the HD matters.... or does it?

My 2 cents:
I LOVE PNG Format! Instant transparency and small file size. Whats not to like??

The size and format of the files on *your* disk are totally up to you, and make little to no difference to SL.
SL converts everything to the same format when it uploads it. Not only that, but when the texture comes from SL and is loaded into your graphics card, it is converted to whatever your graphics card uses, which will almost certainly be an uncompressed format.
I stayed in an Holiday Inn last night.
