I'm sure this is an easy question for anyone with experience making textures. What does a texture need to look like to be applied to a half-sphere or a sphere for that matter?

I tried making a texture as a circle, but the way SL seems to wrap it on it didn't look right.

one easy way to see how textures are applied to sphers is to create a grid texture. whether you do a 4x4 or more (cereal uses a 256 grid for making his cars), put the grid on the sphere (make sure it is 1x1 horiz/vertical) and you will be able to see how the texture wraps around the sphere (or other shapes)

I have personally found photoshop's Polar Coordinates filter to be very useful in this area. It isn't perfect, but it does a better job than I have ever been able to eyeball.

Spider Mandala wrote an excellent tutorial on this very subject. I found it most useful.
