Peggy's description is right. One thing that took me forever to figure out about Gradient is this: left-click where you want to start (darkest). Holding the left mouse button down, move to where you want the gradient fill to end (lightest/translucent) and left-click again. (You should see a line following your cursor.) For some reason that drove me nuts.
