For photorealistic texture work, your really limited to a toolset like:
Photoshop 6+ + Decent plugin/filterset (which may include things like Kai's Power Tools, AutoFX Mystical Lighting, etc) + Decent stock photo library However, for not-quite-photorealistic work, you could probably get away with anything. I also highly recommend the renderosity marketplace. There's a lot of good stock materials there to work with, which simplify collecting and making your own base texture set. ![]() -Adam _____________________

so photoshop 9 can do everything the paintshop 9 does plus photorealistic textures? or does paintshop 9 have some advantage over photoshop 9 too?

Oh no, Photoshop is clearly the superior product in terms of features. However, there's also a very distinct pricetag difference too.

If price was no object then photoshop obviously. It's the professional product of the two.
If you are paying and just using it for Second Life then it's going to come down to what you are using it for. As photoshop is an industry standard learning photoshop is a better transferable skill than learning paintshop pro. I think photoshop elements has problems saving TGAs which would mean that it would be useless for SL. Don't forget the Gimp either which is free. _____________________

As long as you're not writing the plug-ins = use the almost totally undocumented APIs of Adobe...

If given the choice, always go with Photoshop. Me though, I would rather pay $100 for PSP and use the other $500 I didn't spend for Photoshop on a kick ass video card or a wicked dual core CPU.
Either will do anything you need done in SL. Then again Gimp will as well and it's free. It all boils down to preference. I like PSP over PS for most things I need a graphics program for. Stay away from PS Elements since it doesn't do alpha channels (last I looked at it anyway) There is a thread that discusses this with much more detail /109/3c/42526/1.html _____________________

They'll both be pirated for that price, of course....
Amazon has Photoshop CS2 for £445 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00097EBFO/qid=1121158943/sr=1-10/ref=sr_1_11_10/202-5842657-2858217), and the whole creative suite for £1,028 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00092ZC20/qid=1121159131/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_10_5/202-5842657-2858217) and Paintshop Pro 9 for £90. I went to look at Amazon.com as I reckoned that there's no way the US price will be $2,000+. It's $1,129 - almost half the price (and that'll be list prices by the look of it). That's just Adobe taking the piss.

Heh, if you find photoshop 9 CS2 for £20 or even £200 you best snatch it up, if it is the real deal that is. Likely it is pirated at those prices tho and will likely stop working before long and will not come with all the stock photos and documentation.

They changed the way alphas work in versions since then, which makes it a pain to use. I don't even really see a big difference between the versions, it's just "newer" ![]() |

It's highly likely that those are illegal. You could hope that it's used versions of the real thing, but look at how many of them the seller has (click 'view seller's other auctions') so you have to wonder how someone happens to have that many copies of software that expensive. Either it's copied or stolen. In summary, if you want it so bad as to get it illegaly, just download it - don't give that person free money. Disclaimer: I don't endorse downloading or purchasing illegal copies. |

good buyer feedback Sure, if you buy those CDs, you'll get your stuff, but it still doesn't mean it's legal. _____________________

Well the GIMP does the job and is free. The best deal is the photoshop one, as has been stated by others.

It really comes down to what you're familiar with. If you're starting from scratch, find a copy of Photoshop 7 -- it will do everything you need to do in SL, and the 7.01 patch is free from Adobe. The learning curve for GIMP is just as steep as with Photoshop, so I'd select one and stick to it. If money is an object, get GIMP.
You can find used copies, or OEMs (mostly for educational inst., but without manuals) for PS7 very cheap on the net. I bought my copy for $50 and it is the full-featured product with license certificate. I see no need to spend my childrens' inheritance to buy CS. I've been a Paintshop user for years, though, and I still load it now and then to do quick format conversions -- it loads faster then Photoshop, and I can usually have a file loaded and re-saved in the time it takes me to even get the image up in Photoshop. That said, there is no competition with the Photshop tool suites and the vast number of filters, brushes, and tutorials that are available for free on the net. _____________________

Be really wary of these cheap software deals on Amazon, eBay, etc. One thing I've seen some sites do is sell downloadable versions of programs such a Photoshop 9, so you go to their site and download them yourself and don't get any discs. However, what is in the miniscule print, if you bother to read it, is that these are sold as backup copies of software that you are supposed to already own. So you're paying for another copy, not for an official license to use the copy, and you're essentially using pirated software at that point.
I love my Photoshop 7, it does everything I need; you can buy that version of PS on Amazon for about US$120 right now, or you can buy Paint Shop Pro 9 for about the same price directly from Corel. Corel also has a 30-day, full-featured trial for PSP so you can give it a good try before you buy. And, as others said, don't buy PS Elements if you want to produce stuff for SL. _____________________
