From: Robin Sojourner Since I'm on a Mac, where neither the GIMP nor PSP actually run I can't comment on the main question of this thread. (Well, okay, if you can get X11 to work, you can use the GIMP on a Mac, but I can't, so I can't.) Have you tried Gimp.app? All you need is to have X11 installed (and that should just be a question of putting your install discs in, it was on 10.3 and 10.4 as far as I recall). Then you can drop files onto it in the Dock quite easily and it loads them up, just like dropping them onto the PS icon. http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/

From: Eve Cartier I have been using Paintshop Pro 7 (yes, I know it's behind the curve) since the beginning here. While I can not speak for the more recent versions of this software, I do know that I have a problem with mine when creating alpha channels. In the software itself all is fine, but as soon as I download it into Second life a single, to two pixel white line forms around the edge. Sometimes, this isn't an issue, but when attempting to make clothing this can be a problem as, against tanned skin, the while line is very visable. I have asked around about this, and no one has ever given me an answer or a fix. Perhaps there is an answer, perhaps there is not, but for sanity's sake, if you have a choice, I would suggest going with something else. Download this file: http://www.flamingpear.com/dl/freebies.zipAnd install it into your plugin directory. Then, right before you save to TGA (after you create your alpha channel), run the Solidify plugin.

Hi Ordinal! The problem is that X11 simply won't run on any of my machines. It causes all kinds of problems. Usually I get a Kernal Panic right away. I have no idea why this is, and I realize it's not true for all Macs; just for mine. The most recent time I tried was about a year and a half ago, when I got a new Mac. I figured, brand new Mac, fresh out of the box, nothing on the hard drive at all except the stuff that comes installed. This time it has to work, right? Ummm.. wrong. Kernal Panic. So, since there was nothing on the disk, I wiped it all over again, to remove all traces, and ran the Install disks, to restore it to fresh-from-the-factory newness. I have witnesses to all this (I called them over to see, just to make sure I wasn't nuts.) My family decided it has to be something in the routers, or the intranet, or something, since it happens with all the Macs in the house. I think I'm just allergic to X11, and my Macs are picking it up from me. But, since the only thing I would ever use the GIMP for anyway is writing tutorials and answering questions, I also freely admit that I haven't done much to track the issue down and solve it. I figure there are enough other people who do use the GIMP that they can answer the questions! But thanks for your suggestion, anyway.
