Is there a vidual tutorial on this? visual learners really lose out on forums without seeing it happen! ![]() IMHO the best visual tutorial would be to try it on something you're building. ![]() See also post #11 by Chosen for brief explanation: "As Jax said, use this pattern for aligning a texture across multiple prims. Apply the test pattern to all, adjust the repeats, offsets, and rotation on each until the numbers and squares line up. Then replace the test pattern with your own texture." Just slap it on some prims and play with it. It's fun and very very useful! Have fun! _____________________

Oh that will be so useful!!! Thank you, Chosen!
Is it ok to pass it on to a friend? And my additional question is: does it matter which pic we upload, or are they both the same (sorry they're way too big for my little monitor, I can't tell if there is a difference)? |

Is it ok to pass it on to a friend? Absolutely. Give it to as many people as you like. Thanks for asking. ![]() And my additional question is: does it matter which pic we upload, or are they both the same (sorry they're way too big for my little monitor, I can't tell if there is a difference)? They're both the same. The double posting was for two reasons, if you're curious: 1. Viewability As Nam said, some people don't have the ability to see embedded images. Others (like me) don't have the ability to view attached images. I have to log out as Chosen Few and then log back in with an alt to see attachments. It's really annoying. Clearly some setting in the Chosen Few account got screwed up, but the Lindens have been unable to figure out how to fix it. 2. Redundant Backup Basically, both files serve as backups of each other. Given the history of the forums, and the volatility of free image hosting sites, this seemed like a good idea. At one time, the Lindens saw fit to turn off attachments on the forums, which unfortunately destroyed all pre-existing posts that had relied on attached files. If you look at those posts now, you'll find that all the attachments are gone from them. So the embedded image (linked from imageshack) serves as a backup in case anything like that happens again. On the other hand, if too much time goes by between viewings, the imageshack file will auto-delete. The attachment therefore serves as a backup in case that happens. Hopefully the chances of the imageshack version and the attached version both disappearing at the same time are slim enough that it will never happen. Sorry for any confusion. _____________________

Brilliant! Excellent! Bravo! Thank you!
I've been struggling along with a different alignment teture I found on the web. It's OK, but much broader divisions than this one, and thus difficult to tell if things are precisely aligned. And I just *love* that it's perfectly in alignment with the texture editor! Just click-click-click and watch the numbers on the texture change accordingly! Very cool! |

Many thanks, Chosen!
I had need of just such a texture last week, and had to solve it mathematically plus some trial and error. I was trying to make a texture for a stair treads sculpty. So I needed to know *precisely* what parts of the texture mapped to what parts of the stair treads. Using Robin's alignment texture applied to the sculpty, I was able to see the horizontal divisions pretty well. They happened to fall right at the edges of her squares. But the vertical divisions? Turned out that I needed to divide the texture vertically into 32 strips. So most of her grid squares were partway on a tread face and partway on a tread step, and it was difficult to tell just where it bent across each edge. The finer squares on this new texture would have helped in seeing the exact transition points. _____________________

You're welcome, Ceera. Just so you know, you might also want to check out DanielFox's pattern, designed specifically for sculpties. It's divided hexidecimally, so it shows precisely where the vertices are. It also has per-vertex LOD information built into it. It's handy.
/8/c0/217539/1.html ___________________________________________ Tarina, instructions for how to use the test pattern are in post # 11, and scattered throughout the thread. I forgot to put them in the original post. In short, to align a texture across multiple prims, apply the test pattern to all, and then a adjust the repeats and offsets until all the numbers & colors of the pattern line up across all the prims. Since the pattern is divided visually into tenths and hundredths, it's easy to see how far you'll need to offset the texture on one surface to make it align with the next. _____________________

Thanks again, Chosen! That other template certainly does look like it will be useful with my sculpties!

Thanks, Freeman. I won't insult you by refusing your gift if you fully insist on giving it, but really, don't feel like you have to give me anything. I said the texture was free, and I meant it. I'm happy enough just to hear people are benefiting from using it.

Forgive the thread necromancy. I found this thread, played with the pattern, and found it fantastic.
I have written a tutorial about using this pattern. It's available at http://seshat-czeret.blogspot.com/2008/12/texture-alignment-pattern.html Thank you, Chosen! _____________________

i agree, and the recently posted link is also invaluable to those new to texturing. I spent quite a while last year grasping the concept, having never used SL before.

i agree, and the recently posted link is also invaluable to those new to texturing. I spent quite a while last year grasping the concept, having never used SL before. I had found a Gimp tut buried once before and added a response to the appropriate sticky to make sure it could be found again- this however, doesn't really fit any of the existing sitckies and do not want to muddy the waters. Perhaps, since this is Chosen's he may be so kind to add it where he deems appropriate? _____________________

The prims for my tute, and the pattern itself, are now available free at Xstreet SL. https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1444355 (People kept asking me where they could get a copy.) _____________________

Great tutorial, Seshat. It's been great to see that the pattern itself has been helpful for people, and now it's even more so, thanks to your efforts. Thanks for the good work.
![]() Thanks also for the kind words, and the credit. I might suggest you also include Robin in your credits, since she's the one who initially came up with the basic pattern. I simply enhanced it by doubling the size, and by adding the centigrade checkerboard. _____________________
