Any PC software store, or order from Adobe.
Note, it's not cheap... I'd consider GIMP, which is 95% as powerful, and is free. www.gimp.org _____________________

www.gimp.org will point you to the right places. But, even though Gimp was my first image editing program, it's interface is widely regarded as really frighteningly bad and hard to learn. It is as Sio noted, free.
The lower cost entry that SLers prefer is Paint Shop Pro from Jasc which costs about US$600 less than photoshop, has a free trial and is now at US74 for a download version. I've not used PSP myself, but have heard good things about it and is the second recommended editor by LL. I recommend agains Photoshop Elements ($99) as it was designed for snapshot handling and is missing some of the most crucial bits for SL image editing. Good Luck. |

I have a licence for Photoshop at work, and I still prefer GIMP, so it can't be THAT bad. But it does have some issues on Windows.

GIMP is okay. I have Photoshop CS, which I totally love. But it is expensive. GIMP is not so user-friendly, but I've used it and eventually figured it out. I've also used Photoshop Elements and that was okay. In this thread, we discuss the things that Photoshop Elements 2.0 Lacks. Give it a look.

I think the user friendliness or otherwise is personal preference.
I tried photoshop once and most of the negative comments I've heard about gimp, I'd apply to PS too. I guess you can like one or the other, but not both. _____________________

Sio, I bet you like emacs over vi too
![]() (for those who might infer otherwise, this is a classical text editor preference debate that pretty much defines "geek religious war". 'twas but a joke despite vi being far superior to emacs) |

It's been a long time since I've used emacs... _____________________

Mimi, since the release of the Adobe Creative Suite, which features Photoshop 8, prices on Photoshop 7 have dropped dramatically. Do a Google search for Photoshop 7, and you can find many places selling it for between $79 and $200. For SL purposes, 7 is just as good as 8. 8 has some nice new features, of course, but you probably will never use them just for making SL clothing.
You can go with Gimp or Paintshop if you want, but keep in mind there is a reason Photoshop is the industry standard for image editing. I'm a huge Adobe fan (except for Premiere, yuck). Their interfaces are not immediately obvious if you have no experience, but their support is wonderful, and you can find literlally thoudands of online tutorials to help you learn the ins and outs of Photoshop. Also, I'd be happy to help with any questions you might have. Find me i world or post here. |

Mimi, you may also want to try...

Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 or 8
This provides most of the functionality of Photoshop at a much lower price ($25 on Amazon.com for 7.0). I've just started using this after working in Photoshop, and while I like specific features of Photoshop better, there are a number of things that I have found to be easier with PSP. |

I reccomend downloading Photoshop off a file sharing program.
eMule and BitTorrent are awesome file sharing programs. eMule has more selection and BitTorrent is faster Either way it will take a while, but you should be able to get Photoshop from either source, with registered serial number. |

Yep, same reason as Windows is the idustry standard for desktop OS, and it's nothing to do with quality. Having said that, Photoshop IS the best, but it's not so far ahead of the pack as it's advocates sometimes like to proffess. The newest version of GIMP is a pretty closs second, and the fact that it's free (yes, that's not $70 or $90, it's FREE) makes it fairly obviously better value. And by the way, it's quite happy reading photoshop files. _____________________

Originally posted by Siobhan Taylor Yep, same reason as Windows is the idustry standard for desktop OS, and it's nothing to do with quality. First of all, Windows is not the industry standard OS if we're talking about graphic design and digital art. Mac is. Windows is by far the most widely used OS among home users and businesses, but it barely registers as a blip on the digital arts industry radar. But you are correct on one thing. The OS bias has nothing to do with quality (although that was not always the case). Now, that having been said, if you read a little more carefully, you'll see that what I was referring to when I said there was a reason Photoshop is the industry standard was the fact that Adobe's support structure is second to none and the wealth of tutorial information available for learning Photoshop is simply awesome. This is not the case for ANY of the other imaging programs available. If you really want to take the time, there are a million silly little painting programs you could use to generate images that could be useful for SL and in the end the results would all be of the same quality. The relative quality of the different programs was not my point. What is relevant is the fact that the vast majority of how-to information for creating 2D digital art is written for Photoshop, and 99% of all people who have any advice on the subject at all will be able to speak in Photoshop terms. Again, this is not the case for any other program. As I said before, you CAN use any program you want. You could even write your own if you were so inclined. However, if you want to be able to learn from the most amount of artists how to do the most amount of things, use the program that most of them are using. |

I don't recommend this as it is theft. If you're too cheap to pay for a product use a free alternative like GIMP instead. Don't just steal it. _____________________

I've been doing professional digital art for over a decade and PC's are more widely used than Macs, especially when it comes to 3d animation. Either platform is fine depending on your personal preference but the notion that Macs are more widely used for graphics is simply wishful thinking by Mac users. It's purely a myth. _____________________

I was helping someone (name not disclosed for privacy) with a tga export problem in Photoshop 7. We discovered that they had to download an updater from Adobe to remedy this. We got the update, but it didn't work because their copy of PS was illegal. Remember, no updates, support, or dual processor updates for stolen copies. _____________________
