Hello. I was in my store yesterday with a friend, and a woman was there. She had bought one of my outfits. We began to talk, and then she bluntly tells me she is going to resell it with one of her AV's. I was surprised by this, and started asking her questions. She seems to have done this before, and I was cross because she was reselling designers clothing without permission. So I tp in a friend to prove to her what was going on. Then the lady that was going to resell my stuff TP and ran away from us.
I was disturbed by this behavior, so I went over to her vendor where she sold her Av's with other peoples clothing in it and neg rated her. It was a good reason to neg rate her.
I jsut wanted other designers to be aware of what was going on. I am not posting her name in the forums, but if you want to know who it is, IM me.

Set your items to no transfer if you don't want people to resell your items. Or, if you don't mind them reselling it, make it no copy so they can only resell the original they bought.
I spend lots of L$ on clothes I think I will like on my AV, but I don't always. Being able to resell the 'used' clothing seems fair to me if I want to get rid of them and someone else wants them.

Was she selling the original, or a copy?

David, unfortunately this is something that has been going on for ages. As long as your selling orginals to people they can only resell what you have put out. The key here is make sure they are no modify ...why because then they cant do like some have done with a lot of my olderstuff that got mucked through by version 1.0 to version 1.2. They can take your outfit Ie if you have a Jacket all they have to do is change the bottom texture on the two part texture setting and wala they have their own new design and because it was over 50% you only have claims to the orginal 50% of the new design.
Im not against you in anyway for being upset David this has happend to a lot of us due to Permissions being all screwy. But at the same time its up to you to protect your designs and set the permissions accordingly due to Texture thieves and the scammers.
Now if you selling Orginals with appropriate permissions then there should be no issue and her reselling single copys(Ie she buys a set and can only resell that set no other copies being made from it.) of your clothing on an avatar should be flattery in the least.
I know its flustrating David and I sympathize with you as I have been there and gotten raped over the coals on a lot of my older stuff. I wish you the best David and good Luck.
Sincerely, Shadow Weaver

I personally have resold some of the outfits I have bought, but only the no copy ones that I don't wear anymore and I sold them for 10L each complete outfit. Trust me, it was not a profit rofl. It is just like if you have a yard sale in RL. Do I go to each store and ask permission to resell a item I bought from them, NO. However, if this person is selling them as her own designs or for more to make a profit then yes this is wrong and can be resolved with the no transfer selection. As a customer, I personally don't like having clothes with no transfer because when my inventory does get full and after having a outfit for several months, I would like the opportunity to sell it to someone for 10L rather than just deleting it. Seems like a waste to do that when someone else can enjoy it. The No Copy feature does allow for someone to resell only once and they lose it from their inventory when this happens. I'm just offering a different perspective from a shopaholic Huggerz, MJ

Have to agree, this isnt an issue. Either make your items copy/no transfer, in which case they cant give them away or sell them, or make your items no copy/sellable, in which case they can only sell the original.
Folks should be able to sell somethign they paid for when they no longer want it. Now if they mark it up and sell it for 25% more than you sold to them, seems you need to relook at your prices, or find out how they are doing it.

Adjust your prices to kill the profit the other person is making. If the clothes are selling at the higher price, then your prices are to low.
Just a suggestion.

The person in question enjoys creating different av’s – she shops for other people’s clothing, accessories, hair, and makeup, and packages them together with body shape she has made and thinks looks good with them. She then sells them for a (what I consider) very low price – most often not even breaking even, because what she really likes is simply creating the different looks.
She was incredibly upset by your negative rating David, and the negative rating by your friend. She didn’t understand why, if she purchased an item fairly, and that item was marked as transferable, she couldn’t package it with the avatar and re-sell it. She even gives full credit to the designers whose items she packages. She has in no way, that I’ve ever seen, claimed the designs are her own.
That said, I really do understand why you would be upset seeing your items for sale by another person. I just think that it could have been resolved without all the negativity. Maybe you could try talking to her again, and resolve the situation privately.
She has said that she will, in the future, gain permission from those whose items she is re-selling. She certainly never meant any harm.

Just a suggestion. Well you can't adjust your prices based on one person when deailing in clothign retail as there are well over 200 clothiers. You would simply price yourself out of the market and an income. Briana Dawson

You should be flattered she is buying your items to package with her avatar to sell. She is not doing you harm by bringing greater exposure to your clothing by including it in her line of avatars for sale. In fact, she is giving you exposure and complimenting your items. By the way - the line of jeans with the belt are way cool! And remember one big selling point for SL by LL is that you can resell the things you have purchased. However No Transfer is making that impossible. When i redo my jewlery line I will remove the No Transfer permission i have been using and switch it to No Modify (no mod where appropriate). Thats actually a really cool idea for her to buy clothes and sell them on the avatars she makes. Briana Dawson

It's difficult to properly assess this situation without knowing how the permissions on the clothing were set. If the items being resold were multiple copies from a single purchase, then that would be morally remiss of the reseller, but I would also fault the designer for leaving the permissions wide open to allow that if that was not the designer's intention.
If the reseller is selling single item purchases, there are better ways to handle this situation. If these were my designs, rather than neg rating this reseller, I would personally work with this person to increase visiblity and sales of my clothing. As most of the sales in SL are wholesale to consumer, I would welcome a retailer/reseller presence.

She had sent me a notecard explaining more about teh situation. I didnt learn much about it simply because she had TP out of my store when i was asking her what was going on. When she had done that.. then it seemed very suspicious to me. Me and a few others were there with me and i had assumed more likely that she was reselling them. But now to my undesrstanding about the situtation, it was a complete misunderstanding. I had unnegged her, and shes back to 0. I feel relly bad about the situtation, but if she had only told me more about what she was doing... then this could have all been avoided. A little bad judgement on my part as well. I feel bad.. and ask for her forgiveness. Sorry bout this...

I can imagine, if I was in your situation and the person ran away before I understood the situation, I would feel pretty much the same. Especially if I was thinking she was able to copy them somehow. At least it's all set right again

Once again, as in RL, People jump to conclusions. It is sad in this day and age....especially for an online game, that things like this happen. As you said in your first post of this thread...you had been cross and she TP'ed out of there because she got scared. That is what most peolpe do when confronted by an angry OR upset person. it is understandable. It is also great that she did have the guts to explain herself. Some wouldnt. I commend you on admitting that it was a misunderstanding but I urge you as a fellow SL'er, please people...............cant we all just get along? Be nice! Be welcoming! Be supportive! and above all remember, This is all for FUN! Just my 2 cents worth for my very first post in these forums.

When I was selling clothing, I usually set it to mod/no copy/transfer. Near the end, I was setting some outfits mod/copy/no transfer. Is it really bad to sell clothing that is modify? I hate it when I buy something that is no-mod. And do people want copy/no transfer or no copy/transfer?
It's always a dilemma deciding which way to go.

Ya know Beryl your right they probably need to make a dual modification setting for clothing. IE 1 mod being the ability to overlay new textures or modify the texture on the clothing or #2 being able to just adjust the Linden Sliders to accomodate someones avatar.
For example: if both were checked the customer would have complete ability to change that article of clothing. However if you unchecked #1 they would not be able to view or replace the texture. If they unchecked #2 they would no longer be able to modify the sliders to accomodate their avatar.
Just an Idea.

The ability to change the top layer from Jacket to undershirt, or shirt etc would be a nice feature.
I also sell as mod/no copy/transfer. But I am considering changing to mod/copy/no transfer in the future.

(And yes, I have no special background in this area. "Neither a Linden nor a Designer be." as my dear Mom said. )
In my opinion, "Ye pays yer Lindens an' y'takes yer choice." That goes for Creators *and* buyers. If you set your items a certain way, assume that they will be used that way. Buyers - check the permissions if you really want to know what you can do with something. Sellers - I'm much more comfortable when buying an expensive item if I know I can resell it, if and when I decide it's not for me. There are many items I'd love to have. I couldn't afford them when they were around. Now I can, and they're gone. One only hopes to happen across a garage sale.

Briana Dawson If your prices are competative and not selling extra cheap, then there should be no complaint at all. If you set a price based on what stuff sells for and someone buys it all and is able to sell it for more, then they are either better saleman, providing some service you arent or taking advantage of people that have no clue about average prices. In this case it appears that you arent providing the level of service this other person is. When I say you, I mean the people that are selling the clothes. It's like being a warehouse computer parts dealer complaining that HP buys your stuff, puts it together and sells the complete system for more than you would sell the parts.

It's always a dilemma deciding which way to go. Either way is fine with me. Sometimes I do want to modify a piece of clothing, but if it didn't cost too much I don't mind buying another one that is a different color. I don't mind buying some expensive clothes - Neph's stuff springs to mind - when I know the workmanship/quality - if they are set to no transfer. But if I'm spending more than L$2k on an outfit I'd rather have it modifiable, no copy, and transferable. I'd hate to spend all that, decide I don't really like it and not be able to pass it on to someone else - either free or for a nominal price.

If the permissions on an item are set to mod/no copy/transfer and someone resells them as part of an AV bundle, I don't see why that's a biggie. It might be a little rude to do so without saying where the clothing came from though. But once you sell something it becomes the property of the new owner. They can do what they like with it.
With the stuff I sell, the outfits are usually mod/no copy/transfer, but things like shoes and single pieces of clothing I do mod/copy/no transfer, since these things may be used in more than one outfit.
If you set your clothes no mod then the buyer can't fit them to their AV if necessary, something I think would piss most people off. It does me!
Incidentally, if I was in SL doing something I thought okay and people started telling me off and tping their mate in to tell me off too, I'd probably just leave as well.
In RL, personal shoppers, fashion consultants and the like regularly buy stuff from other people and resell them to their clients as a package, and I don't see Vivienne Westwood or Jean-Paul Gaultier getting their knickers in a twist about it. Why the heck should any of us pixel pushers get upset when REAL fashion designers don't?

One issue with no transfer is that I have lots of people purchase for friends/partners as gifts and no transfer would render gift-giving impossible.

Glad this situation got resolved. I sell all my items mod/no copy/trans. This makes most sense to me. I encourage my customers to mod the items they buy from me (forgot to mention I sell clothes. ugh egocentric speech). After all, you don't want everyone who ends up buying the same outfit to look alike. Transferable...so they can gift it or sell it. I don't care what they do with it once they purchase it from me. Heck, if they want to they can sell it for double the price if they can get it...more power to them. Oooh I lied. I do sell some items as mod/copy/no trans, but I also include a mod/no copy/trans version as well in the same package; if the customer so chooses, they can keep both versions or give the trans version to a friend. It's fun to share. Sorry for the crazy use of emoticons.

Personally I've always used the mod/copy/no transfer system, I've never had anyone really complain about not being able to give it away. The only real reason I use this system is for convience, I have a ton of avatar shapes myself and like being able to switch between avatars without worrying about finding the clothing folder I need as well. If the permission system were more robust we might be able to use all the features at one, but if user A gives peice of clothing b to user C, all instances of that piece of clothing in user A's inventory are removed and user C gets a piece of clothing that they do with as they just like the first one could, just a though >.>
