I am attempting to make a pleated skirt for myself. I am attempting to make a skirt of vinyl pleated just like the picture attached to this post. Now I know that I have seen the subject of pleated skirts touched upon very briefly and it sounds like it might be a difficult thing.
so.....has anyone decided the best way to make them?
Would you:
Create a texture, using a line to accent the pleat and leave it that way?
or...
Would you have to build something onto the skirt ot create pleats?
or...
Is there another way that I cannot think of. IM bouncing around ideas so that is why Im seeking input from people who have been designing for a while.

That was the subject I had seen first when I put in a forum search for "pleated" and that is why I said that I heard that pleated skirts are hard to make. Hence, Im looking for another solution. but Thanx

You could go either way. Neither method is perfect for pleats. A texture on the skirt mesh will stretch in certain poses/animations and could make your pleats look distorted. If you're very careful about where you paint your pleats you can probably bypass that problem. Yes, you could also build a pleated skirt out of prims and attach it to your avatar's pelvis or stomach. Certain poses/animations will cause a leg to poke out of it though. Both ways look great if you sort of blur your eyes when you look at them.

Don't forget that even with a prim skirt you still need to make convincing textures. With wide pleats and a stiff fabric (like latex) the end result might be a little more realistic, but I would recommend trying the textured approach first. Even if you decide it needs to be a prim skirt you can probably "recycle" parts of the texture, while the reverse might not be quite as feasible. Caveat lector: I haven't actually made any prim skirts myself But I've done enough low-poly modeling and toyed with things in SL enough to have a sense of it. Or so I tell myself.

These are actually the things I was thinking about which is why Im so torn. the skirt would be made out of vinyl so I suppose I could try and try and try and see if it looks right. Maybe i couuld make a black skirt and then just and a dark grey to indicate the "pleat". That is the first way I thought about it.
The method of using prims might be worse to do since I have a tail already attached to the pelvis.

ooo I just had an idea. Perhaps one of the fabulous prim skirt designers would make a plain prim skirt and allow users to texture it? It could be mod/no trans ? Food for thought, would be a great item to have in a wardrobe.
