There is something wrong with a game where I can't hug you unless you click "Accept" but I can shoot you and you can't do anything about it.

Best signature ever, and at the same time one of the most unfortunate.

Sometimes. ;) I've met a lot of people who seemed to have lost their humanity when they hit the 'Connect' button. Then again, maybe they never had any. Anonymity brings the good and the bad, only difference is the good can flourish with or without it.

So've I, oddly enough.

Although I suspect our sets would not overlap.

I think they just might.

Your reading comprehension evidently needs some polishing. You should, in the future, refrain from dragging personal issues into public discussions. Notice I said 'anonymity' of which automagically excludes the issue(s) to which you are not-so-subtly alluding, therefore as much as you might like to imagine that it had something to do with you and your group, it didn't. Thanks.

... and you should, in the future, try to be a little more creative when making alt accounts.

As it is, you are correct in that it was poor form to derail the thread in such a manner. But I found your post deeply ironic, and the sheer artistic beauty of it moved me to comment.

So when does the re-humanizing effect start to produce noticeable results?

It's a gadget.
07-06-2006 22:01
I'm male, this is a gadget. It's one of the greatest toy gadgets around. Plus there's an awe-inspiring amount of stuff to see. Plus it's a reason to aspire to learn about quaternions :-) And you get to look like whatever you want. The funny thing is, my inworld av is even more boring looking than RL. Maybe I'll fix that someday; it's nice to have the option, and some friends are certainly showing me that's worthwhile. But for now, the gadget aspect has me enthralled.

Thanks for posting the thread, btw.

You might be surprised to discover your error rate on my alts, of which I have no new ones. Sorry to disappoint. :p

Additionally, the fact that you butted into a public conversation that had nothing to do with your silly personal vendettas and attempted to character assassinate someone over a completely unrelated issue speaks more volumes than you do.

The real irony is still waiting to be found by you.

1. The sheer friendlysness to furries ingame... I have yet to meet the furst person going " OMG! A furrie!" ingame (tho on the forums.. O.o)

2. The simple way you can build stuff, without having to learn Maya the hard way... (the manual for that program is thicker tyhen a bible..)

3. Meeting new people, and getting reaquainted with old friends

4. Shopping!!! ^^

5. it runs on my computer without problems

6. Freedom! the chance and ability to do ANYTHING you want, including stuff you can't or won't do in RL, wether because it's not socially accepted, possible, or allowed.

7. Being able to lose or gain weight by just adjusting a slider *g*

8. First game EVAR where you can look exactly the way you want to. (no foxes in WOW or any other game... Lest for Brutal Paws of Fury: but that was a vixen. Right species, wrong gender...)

Hmmmmm thinks I like

1. I live in a town with a 8-1 male to female ratio, so this gives me social opportunities outside the norm for where I live (When you work 11 hour days due to understaffing at work, you just don't have the urge to go visit the real world once your off =/)

2. Gadgets! First SL is just one big gadget, but omg there are gadgets within the gadgets. I have tons of av's gadgets gizmos things that fly, things that you can fly on that your not supposed to be able to (I rode one of Luc Aubrets Centurion ICBM's buckaroo banzai style on a one stop trip to Jessie the other day). Admitedly I do have a penchant for weapons, guns, hud combat systems, blah blah blah. I never use any of it cept on mock combat with friends. Can't help it just love things that go boom daka boom boom BOOM! muahah *grins evilly as Rauche explodes in nuklear fire behind him*

3. Daryth. Kennedy's. Dragons. nuff said.

4. Skydiving! I make it my goal every time I go to keep jumping till I get #1 on the target I'm aiming for. So far I haven't failed yet (Took a few tries at Abbots though).

5. I finally came out of the closet.... errr.... closet furry (totally hetero here =P)..... a mildly unhappy Human AV Lupus Delacroix has been reborn as a cute furry and above all *SEXAY* Jogonai

6. Samurai Island combat *does the happy dance* fell in love with this the first time I saw two samurai square off in a duel. Loves it!

Does anyone else see the irony of a mini-flamewar occuring in a thread dedicated to what is right about SL? :)

What is right about SL?

1. People can be who and what they want. Sometimes this means someone/thing else than what they are in RL. Sometimes it means they have the means to be even more themselves.

2. Creating. It's like magic -- learn the rules, practice, and you can create things others have not dreamed of. Anything is worth trying.

3. Meeting and sharing with others. Many people I would never meet in RL since they live far away; but here are many people with imagination and thoughtfulness.

4. Help for the disadvantaged. For those inhibited in some way or suffering a limitation, the virtual space allows freedom once more -- both in what one can do, and with whom one can interact. We are not tied to our physical location or limitations.

5. Self-organization. I am amazed to watch communities develop their own ways of doing things, using the tools they have been given. Watching people step up and having a chance to participate in the community makes my heart feel good, especially if they are people who would not be able to do so in RL (for whatever reason).

I could go on (...yes, I have to admit, I actually enjoy shopping...), but I think the thing I like is that people can think things and then make those thoughts reality for themselves and others without (idealistically) any of the restrictions -- tangible, emotional, social -- of RL.

The world is new again, open for exploration and creation.

Control Q.

Oh, THIS does not surprise me one bit. This function works in the forums too, but they hid it under the "log out" link.

I can't believe the attitude that some people display, especially in a thread created solely for the GOOD things in second life. It's just disgusting.

Thank you so much to the other 99% of you who have posted some positive, non-gloomy thoughts - you're wonderful people. Please keep it up.

Now, where is that "ignore" function...

(Edit: I can't ignore a MOD. Oh, just great. Well - the positivity of this post is still vastly outweighing the negativity. Which is a good thing.)

In response to the original post: too much to list. SL is unique in what it is -- nothing out there can even be directly compared. And I can play basically for free! How cool is that?? :)

The playing for free is very cool. There are certainly ways to make money, especially if you have a bit of artistic or musical talent - but you don't need it to kick back and relax and have a good time in SL. Those of you in the thread that seem to like *exiting* Second Life most of all, well - don't let the door hit your arse on the way out. SL is a better place without that kind of gloomy outlook.

I can't remember if I mentioned this one, but I enjoy the huge wealth of resources provided by the community outside of the 'game'. Like the scripting Wiki, templates for clothing design, and even (for the most part) the forums.

As often as I get frustrated with some of LL's decisions, or the SL equivalent of 'bad hair days' (you're lagged, you crash, half your build flings off into another sim, etc etc...) it's because SL has so much potential, and so much to offer that you simply can't get anywhere else, that my expectations seem to be in 'hyper-critical-mother' range. ("Second Life! Sit up straight and stop fidgeting!";)

I really couldn't make an itemized list of everything I find 'right' with Second Life. The fact that I pay more than my electric bill to be here every month can attest to that. (The fact that that is entirely my choice and not just 'what it costs to play' is another point in its favor.)

I'll try to summarize in a run-on....

I can color in GIMP or Photoshop or any painting program, and I can create in 3d Max or various 3D creation programs, and I can script in various computer languages (assuming I had the knowledge to do that at all) and I can design and decorate and draw and paint and sculpt in any number of mediums... but only in SL do I have the option of learning and doing all of those, and then inviting old and new friends, from every part of the globe and social class, at any hour of the day or night, to interact with them.

It's not just the social, and it's not just the creative... other programs offer those... it's the blending of the two that make SL so unique.

It's got to be the people! I really meeting different types of people from different background has having a conversation. I'm going to shamelessly put in a plug for The Shelter because Groove Mechanique sent me there (WTG You Rockabilly Skunk, You!) when I was a dayling and didn't know anything. I'm a monthling now, lol, and while I'm not exactly aware of everything in SL, I do try to be just as helpful as the people who helped me. I go shopping for goth/punk clothes a lot in SL and run across purple shirts who may need a little help and I do my best to guide them to a couple of places that'll help get them on their feet.

I kind of started out SL thinking the furries where a weird, weird group of people, but I kind of like dealing with them now because I've found that most of them I've run into aren't what most people claim them to be, but are rather polite and fun to be around. They tend to be a bit better behaved than most non-furry types oddly enough. So I guess a broadening of my mind is another thing I think is right with SL.

Shopping too!

I've only been playing for a very short time, but I'm already highly addicted. I came over from TSO following my Sim family. The things I like the most...

My family and friends

Shopping! There's an endless amount of choices. Everyone can look unique and different.

The graphics are breathtaking.

I haven't started building or creating yet, but I do hope to do that as well in the future.
