Thought peeps might be interested in this post by Steve Linden. Assuming it's not something that's known and I just missed it, that is.

From: Steve Linden
Rather than dwell on the inadequacies of the existing local lighting model, I will simply say that we are right now in the process of replacing the existing local lighting with something that actually works. Stay tuned for more info in an upcoming release (sometime with in the next few months we hope).

Don't know if the "next few months we hope" bit is about an announcement or the actual release of it but, whichever, it's good news. :)

good to hear LL are prioritising, and trying to develop stuff that "actually works" for a change.

Well my whole niche in Second Life is baking attractive lighting and shadows into textures, so a GOOD local-lighting system pretty much puts teh Aimee out of bidness.

But honestly, this is sounds like it will be an awesome advance for Second Life. It will be good for everybody so I would hardly pull the P2P/Telehub/Turn-your-back-on-Gov-Linden crap (even if LL does respond to that sort of thing ;) )

Probably could have skipped that and gone with the catch-all "we are working on it for future release" or some such bland statement.

Ok, I'm done nitpicking for the duration of this post.

Well, the might not impliment shadows...

It is a pity for people doing that kind of work though. I myself was considering doing that kinda thing. And when did I expect to be able to start producing? The next few months. Ah, well, gives me more time to work on other plans I guess.

Ya, my learning Maya has helped me create some beautiful builds, but learning the tool took me out of productive mode for quite a few months. Had I known local lighting was going to be revised I think I would have spent that time working on something with a greater future. :(

I think they're just replacing Local Lighting with one that works. Not one that doesn't effect FPS. The main reason why people are turning local lighting off is because it's effecting their frame rates.

So, Aimee, you're still in business. Your lighting doesn't effect frame rates.

Keep smiling!!!

This is great news. Even if they replace it with a system that produces much nicer looking lighting there's still no way in would come close to matching the quality of baked textures done with radiosity, global illumination, or other fancy rendering tricks. Real time engines simply aren't capable of it... yet :)

That is SUCH a tough question because we don't know exactly how good the new local lighting system is going to be!

If I were to do it all over again, I would want to see some screenshots from the Lindens of the new Local Lighting system before I started learning Maya. Only if I saw deficiencies in their system that could be remedied via texturebaking would I move forward on Maya.

Heh, I've just built a small, shadow-baked room myself and was thinking, "Hmm, did I just waste my time?"

Improved lighting would be awesome in any case, though. As I'm big in using lighted panels and trim in my gadgets, I think the results could be very cool looking. Perhaps as essential to my creative process as shiny!

Ah, one day. :)

Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court.

You're right Chip. But what frustrates me is that even if Second Life was capable of all of the above then people would still turn it off.

As a content creator. I'm not going to use features that people are turning off.

Damn it. If Linden Lab gave us an easy to access option to turn the world off and leave just cute avatars behind with a nice ass. Oh and a sex ball. Then I'm sure people would turn the world off.

Ass is all that matters! That might be why Linden Lab don't ban me. They need ASS!!

I don't care how nice they make it look, if they don't fix the FPS problem I can't use it.

I've had to ration my ripple water, and it only cuts my FPS in half.

Not by a factor of 10+.

That's I thought I was just having. The new renderer was scheduled for some time in the first half of this year wasn't it?

Well this is great news, I would be happy even if they just took the current system and made it GPU dependent. But wouldbe even happier if they just made it all around better, AND GPU dependent.

Be brave Nimrod!

It's going to get worse. I'm going to get shot down by planes at the end and Hamlet Linden is going to walk out and stand on my large monkey balls and say "It was beauty that killed the beast".

I hope the new system makes current light prims not lit.

This way people who really want light will have to update the crap thats out there or start fresh.

I just tore down and rebuilt my store in Aqua after seeing a screenshot that had it in the background from someone who had shiny turned off. Yikes!

A few months? Cool... lets put that in 'Linden Time'

HTML 'in a few weeks'

Havoc 2 'Soon'

So around 2010 we should have new lighting yayayayaya break out the streamers folks!

(do I REALLY need a sarcasm tag?)
