From a post by Robin Linden: From: Robin Linden The number that appears on the home page of our website reflects accounts created, currently at 209,075. Obviously not every account ever created is still actively involved in Second Life, so we also look at 'active' accounts. The way to count active accounts that we think is most meaningful is a trailing 60 day measure of unique log-ins. That number is currently just over 103,000, and will be included in the stats that we will be reporting daily, beginning next week. I think this is the first quasi-official, mostly-unambiguous statement of the SL population that has been given. Mind you, 60 days is a *long* time in attention span-space. I'd like to see 7-, 14-, 30-, and 60-day stats released. (Note: this thread was first posted in Land and Economy. It's probably more appropriate in General though...)

Getting reliable numbers from any MMORPG company is usually an effort in futility. Lineage, for example, claimed something like 6 million people playing in 2001, many years before WoW ever rolled onto the scene.
Even WoW's numbers are quite probably inflated. It looks good on press releases and on investor's minds.

That'll be great! To let us know how many people there are to sell to!

P.S. Your 130k, Brace, was not that far off from 103k, and was generous to boot!

Population History
05-05-2006 12:48
Is there any population history info available online for Second Life? I'm particularly interested in about how many people were here in February of 2004 when I first arrived My gut tells me that it was around 2,500, but I may be WAY off

Edited to add: This post from October 2005 has some useful numbers in it...

At last night's community roundtable, it was announced that a new stats section is going to be release (I wish I had the Linden quotes verbatim) containing all kinds of cool, juicy data! Regards, -Flip

coco I must have been thinking of perhaps 25,000 then... for some reason the number 25 was on my brain (and in my gut).
