...so i voted and was wondering how i'd rate compared to everybody else, right?..

...then the results popped up and i was kind of surprised to see not only that a huge chunk of the users had the same bandwidth as myself, but also that they were divided into two clearly distinct groups, right?..

...then i noticed that the 10-100 mbps group (niiiice) was 50% of the users - and my own bandwidth, 1-3mbps, the other 50%...what an unexpected rigid segmentation of SL's users!..

...then i noticed that only two people had voted, including myself... ;)

What happens if we have 1Mbps? We have to check two boxes.

eh yeah maybe I should have made the options a bit less ambiguous. Still, you could check the 1-3 one if you have a fast 1Mbps connection and 0.5-1 one if you have a slow 1 Mbps connection :p

I have a 2 MegaBIT connection. I think you need to make your poll clear between rated speed and actual speed. Companies will sell you internet at a rate of BITS(per second), when the actual Megabytes(per second) speed is an 8th of that (8 bits make a byte).

I put myself in 1-3Mbps as I have an ADSL 2Mbits down, 256Kbits up.

Lowercase b means bit while uppercase B means byte. So when I write Mbps I mean Megabits per second. It's not possible to change anything in a poll after it's been posted.

I'm not sure I even understand that. I have done various speed tests, and my speed rating always comes out between 920 and 960 Mbps. Does that make me slow or fast?

Ooops, I actually chose 0.5-1 mbit, instead of 1-3 mbit, too (I have a 1 mbit connection).

When I posted the poll I was thinking 0.5 - 1 as in larger than or equal to 0.5 smaller than 1. 1-3 larger than or equal to 1, smaller than 3. Is that how others are interpreting it? I didn't really think about making it less ambiguous until after I posted the poll. I chose 10-100 and I have a 10Mbps connection, downstream and upstream.

I would have voted for "direct spinal connection to MAE West" but that wasn't an option. :(

Ah, I remember when we measured in baud. I still don't know the exact difference between that and bits.

I need an option for "I don't know what my bandwidth is, and can you tell me how to find it?"

I think baud is related to the telephone line. That it means signals/second, where each signal do not necessarily consist of only one bit.

The hourglass leaves, but it just still keeps saying "free test in progress." Is there some other site that will do this?

coco

Never mind, I found another. It says I have 2072.1 kpbs.

P.S. Ok! How come I don't get the 1-3 mbps most of y'all have?

That is 1-3 Mbps.

It's ~2 Mbps.

It really depends on what you're spending on it.

Most folks are paying between US$30 and $45 for their broadband. I'd say most of those folks are being promised 1.5 Mbit downstream and, for the most part, are actually getting that much throughput or even a little better. So if you're paying in that range of money and getting something close to that much performance, you're getting a decent deal that's inline with most consumers.

If you're paying that much money but getting a 3 mbit pipe, that's an even better deal than most folks are getting. If you're paying somewhere in that range but getting 6 mbit, as I am, then you're getting an absurdly good deal and you should never move away from that service area.

That's for traditional broadband, anyway. In markets where consumer-accessible fiber-optic infrastructure is available, I think the price range is around ~US$40 while the bandwidth delivered is something obscene -- in the neighborhood of ~20 mbit. That's a big fucking pipe. Feel free to salivate for it -- only a few markets have fiber to the home right now, but that'll change in the coming years.

Hope that sheds some light on the "am I getting a good deal" questions. As long as your broadband pipe exceeds 1 Mbit, it's pretty good. But there will always be a better market somewhere.
