Like the title says... Why do people always want to buy your first-land? Is there some benefit of first land over not-first-land? I thought it was just cheaper to buy is all.

Heh heh rapacious land barons. Don't give it up easy, you won't respect yourself in the morning.

Well. That's about it. It's cheaper.

And sometimes, less than nice people will buy it REALLY cheap because new users don't understand it's value. Cruel, but true... :(

The first land plot might be adjacent to property they already own. Or in the same sim (I know I'm always looking for land in my sim ;) )

Because newbies often aren't very smart. They might be able to buy land from a newbie for 2000 when it's actually worth 3000.

What does smart have to do with it? When I first started playing, I had no idea what land could sell for... I had this silly belief that SL was a game, or something, and that cutthroat real-estate competition wasn't fun.

It doesn't have anything to do with stupid/smart, it has to do with ignorant/knowledgeable. New users are often ignorant to the value of things in SL, including land, and this allows people with low or no ethics to scam them out of their First Land so they can turn around and make a profit off of it.

As one who has tried to buy others first land, here is my story.

I bought a plot of first land, and a house in a box. I found that the house was too small for one plot, so I had to buy the adjoining plot. Then when I tried to furnish the house, I hit parcel full limits. So I had to buy more plots just to get the prim allowance.

I wanted to try my hand at building, more prims required, more plots needed.

Christmas arrived, I had to decorate, more prims required, more plots needed.

The longer I stay, the more land/prims I need. I do not want the turmoil of resiting my property, so I have to buy land on my sim ie first land.

Lots of the plots around me are barren, purchased by users who bought the land as it was their entitlement, but no longer visit Second Life. I have tried contacting these people, they have land/prim entitlement I desparately desire, and it sits there unused!

Me, too. I think lots of people are in the spot of they have their land, but now they need more, and next to it. Land dealers make this easier in a sense, in that they will often sell a lot of land that is already contiguous.

Unfortunately, I'm sitting on some 2800m of land I am paying tier on and yet have not had for a month now or more. I have written to those disappeared people near me, but haven't heard back.

ALL of the other available land in that sim is owned by Lazarus Divine.

I am still working on this, but I may just tier down and save myself the grief.

If they do not own land in your sim and are wanting to buy within a day or two of you obtaining it (as happened in Acontia within mere hours, someone was going around asking if people wanted to sell for L$1024), it's probably a scam.

If they own land in your sim and are wanting to buy yours in less than a week, it's probably a scam.

If they offer to buy it at a stupidly low price, regardless when they are offering, it's probably a scam (research the current average price of land per square meter, or check the Find window to see what the low end for-sale prices tend to be)

If anyone is wanting to buy yours more than a few weeks after you obtained it, (except for pricing as above) it's probably not a scam.

In between, it's a judgement call.

No. If they own land in your sim and want to buy yours, it's likely because they want to own more land in that sim, for the extra space and prims. And chances are they've been on the lookout for that for quite some time.

If you look on their land in the sim and they have a store or house or something already built there, chances are good that they want the extra land and will work with you on a price. At least I know I would, if somebody near me wanted to sell. (And I have before, giving that individual a nice profit. I only wish I could have bought more from her at the time.)

Dyne - going out on a limb here because I may have the wrong person, but I THINK I saw your build at Winter Festival, and though I don't remember it now, I remember looking at the name, because it was TERRIFIC!

We're talking mostly about other First Land buyers here, or at least I am, because that seems like the most likely case of someone owning land in the same sim as a First Land buyer, less than a week in. A few of those may know they want more prims that quickly, but most won't, and they certainly haven't been on the lookout for long.

Does First Land come up for sale in sims with already established land owners all that often? As far as I've seen, it's mainly in brand new sims.

If not, that's why I said "probably".

I'm going to guess it's not mine, because mine is (to me) passable at best. It's an Ice Castle on a bad foundation, with a snowcubeman and a Grinch cube. I was offline and didn't have time to build anything until a few hours before opening ceremonies, before I'd even seen the plot, so I tossed something together and I was lagging pretty bad when I finally got to Zermatt and installed it. Haven't really had a chance to go back and work on it more in the meantime.

Ok, I get it.

And yes, that was you! I didn't have much time, either. I figure next year (I hope we have this again then), I will start working on it ahead of time and hope I'm chosen, like someone else suggested.
