Headline from playmouse.com: FBI Targets Suicide Girls, Other Mainstream Porn Sites Posted by Paul Lucas on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 The FBI began implementing its new, Orwellian "anti-obscenity initiative" this month, targetting sites such as the popular Suicide Girls, Rate My Boobies.com, and other websites featuring consenting adults. Impelled by Attorney General Gonazalez and FBI Director Robert Meuller, the agency has begun to pour a large amount of resources into its new anti-porn crusade. Unlike previous efforts, which mostly targetted child porn and snuff rings, this new initiative is specifically targetting mainstream erotica sites. Excerpted from an arstechnica article:"Under current American law, the Miller test is the means by which the courts determine if content is obscene and consequently not eligible for first amendment protection. The Miller test evaluates the literary, artistic, political, and scientific value of content as well as contemporary community standards. If content or expression is well within accepted community standards or it has intrinsic value, it does not constitute criminal obscenity. According to an electronic memo from FBI headquarters, established legal precedents indicate that conviction is most likely in cases where the content 'includes bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior.' " According to a recent CNN report, the FBI currently has more manpower devoted to the porn crackdown than to national security operations. Many agents within the FBI are also reportedly upset with the initiative, saying resources would be better spent pursuing more pressing problems such as terrorism, illegal immigration, drug trafficking, child pornography, and organized crime. The FBI has also imposed strict new "bookkeeping" standards that many small porn sites apparently cannot meet. Here's the message posted to the front page of www.ratemyboobies.com:"This site has been CENSORED BY THE US GOVERNMENT under 18 USC 2257. The government is mandating that we meet certain bookkeeping requirements, ones impossible to meet for this site. Never mind that those requirements do not actually gain the public anything. This is the strongest attack on free speech since the passage of the CDA, and oddly, the media seems to have hardly noticed. The penalty for not abiding by these bookkeeping requirements is five years in prison. The regulations were promulgated by Alberto Gonzales, US Attorney General appointed by George Bush. If you voted for Bush, this is your fault. If you think this country is free, you are sadly mistaken. No nation has freedom when it is run by religious zealots." Wow.
However, everything in SL is simulated - no models.
Except for textures of course.
Can SL get away with the ASP defense?

Not surprising. This is what happens when the government is run by uptight folks with nothing better to do. After all, how else did this guy get to serve as long as he did?

From: Anya Dmytryk you'd think there would be more important things to spend their money on... I'm not in favour of porn at all really, but I am shocked at this bill as well as the lukewarm response to it in the "land of the free." How much evidence of the totalitarian regime the US has become has to build up before the populace actually notices that they are living under it? Interesting to watch from the outside anyway.

Well, one interesting thing about furry adult material is there's a lot of art about it—like not photographs, but actual comics or paintings. There's also stories to go along with them, so that's a one-up for the artistic front. It's kind of weird seeing Suicide Girls being nudged to as a "mainstream porn site". That's not really a headline I can hold worthy.

suicide girls
10-06-2005 13:30
Yeah. I wouldn't call SG "porn" at all, really. Its a glamour site. But it has NEKKID BOOBIES so it MUST BE EVIL!!!! I suspect SG is being targeted under the stricter "bookeeping" regs of 18usc2257. 2257 was recently "updated" to "better protect" nude models. Check the SG boards under the search term "2257" for some chatter on the new regs: http://suicidegirls.com/boards/search/keywords=2257,type=all,search=comments,daterange=0,sort=score/

what a waste...
10-06-2005 13:32
but probably with subversive intent other than just plain vanilla zealotry... maybe more insidious than that, even. i know this is my political half-mad reasoning, but our "intelligence communities" are really pretty good at their jobs... after all, there was that lil' ol' memo back around aug. 6, 2001 - "bin laden determined to strike within u.s." amongst many many other instances and evidence that they do their job pretty well... it's just the "bosses" who are the fuck-ups, ignoring the intelligence. so get those snoops busy with other stuff... that way, there's less chances of being bothered with pesky memos reminding them to do their jobs. easier to ignore the problems - and excuse themselves of blame - when they don't get any more memos... always remember, they use their piousness only as a cover.

Heh, I read an article where someone at the FBI was basically saying that the joke around the office was "Well, I guess we won the war on terror."

All it'll take is for this to get challenged in court, and it'll stop dead in its tracks. You can't flaunt free speech like this.
Of course, billions of dollars has to be lost first.
SL isn't exempt from this, btw.

The Religious war has started. I think its time we let Pat Robertson and James Dobson know what we think at the polls next year.

I have college friends who are FBI and they say what about the War on Terror?they Said One famous Fundamentalist Pastor (Who met in a private meeting with them to cheer them on their crusade against porn) called Porn Terrorism to which every single FBI agent there listening to him booed him. The Fundamentalist pastor quickly fled the building as my friends state it.

Ok, first off, Suicide Girls were never contacted by the FBI. They took their stuff down *just to make sure* the FBI didn't come looking for them. Way to take a stand.
We've known about 2257 for a while, ratemyboobies went down because they didn't have the proper documentation (2257 basically says you have to have an absolutely nightmarish amount of documentation per model and per photo for anything after June 1 1995. Time to start enjoying 80's porn again!), nor was there any way to get it. 2257 pretty much prohibits amateur collector sites now.
To see one of the *actual* fatalities of the anti-obscenty laws, check out red-rose-stories.com. All of their machines were confiscated and the admin is being indicted.
Their page housed pedophilic stories, including group sex with 3 year olds. Archive.org it if you want proof.
Furry sites are questionable, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lawsuit crop up against a site with infered furry pedophilia. This is pretty much the revenge that the government has always wanted since the Allesandra's Smile cases. Any artform that deals with kids might possibly have a problem now.

I'm not the least bit surprised. In the minds of the far right, sneaking a blowjob is much worse than starting an optional war based on exaggeration, lies and data manipulation.

The idea behind going after furry-related things is simple. The law refers to "bestiality", which usually is interpreted to mean sexual relations between human and animal, but you see how this may be misapplied to mean anything regarding beasts whatsoever, including the nonsexual themes of PG furry areas.

yep. bestiality is very likely the complaint they'll use to condemn furry sites.
