Having been in combat groups for a looooong time, I keep seeing these phases. Every month or two a group of people gather together. Generally they're poorly spoken, having issues telling "they're", "their", and "there" apart, and the like. They're chaotic, scattered, and rude, but the most common thing is that they are some sort of "soviet" thing.
Okay. This has nothing to do with communism. I feel that communism is a silly ideal to reach for, but whatever, you want to pretend/aspire to communism, that's your business.
But of all the regimes to like, particularly if you're an American, why would you want to get identified with the Soviet Russian army? Poorly paid, under equipped, known to use terror and massacre of civilians. The generals used outmoded methods. The soviet regime itself was brutal and repressive, using violence, torture, and total supression of human nature to stay in power.
Why would you spend time to make a group glorifying that? Even most *Russians* dislike the soviet regime. Its like emulating the facsit party of Italy, for heaven's sake.
if anyone... anyone at all... can explain why soviet groups keep popping up, filled with griefers and people who can barely spell, please. I'm begging you, help me understand

All the pieces of the puzzle are in your post, you just have to put them together.

In Soviet Russia, Pepsi drinks YOU!
Actually, I really don't have a serious answer. I'm just bored enough to post stupid, over-used jokes.

Actually, I've always chaulked up their popularity to C&C Red Alert (which was arguably the best RTS game for a long time). Nothing like a good Soviet Tank Rush...

In America, we correct our spelling. In groups based on Soviet Russia, spelling corrects you. (Yeah, someone had to go Yakov in this thread. ) Edit: Doh, I was second!

Duh! They want to be totalitarian dictators, who can get away with being brutally repressive, using violence, torture, and total suppression of human nature to stay in power. ;p

I mean these days, nobody can beat the US. So you have to go back in time to find a worthy adversary.

I believe this thread might have lost all sense at this point, but I believe the reason the soviet groups keep popping up is that at the height of the cold war, the USSR, which is also known as the soviet union, was arguably the most powerful *nation*, in the world. They're simply labelling themselves as something powerful.
In order to really try to make sense of this, you need to look at the leadership and members of these groups, they're mostly immature, often griefing. I mean who knows, maybe eventually a group based on the German S.s. will pop up.

Yeah, that was awhile ago *laughs* the whole nazi wave.
And lowlocdog, first off, I didn't mean that group specifically though its sweet that you read my description and thought immediately of your group. And also, thank you for proving my point.

Cool accents, cool uniforms. Beyond that I have no idea.

Soviet conscripts didn't get uniforms.
And if you mean ingame, then you really have no idea what you're saying.

Well, if the players are U.S., the USSR were THE "bad guys" for several decades, which lends them a certain mythic quality. Also, they had this crude-tech thing going, with tanks and fighter jets that could be repaired by an illiterate Siberian kid with 6 months' experience. They're the underdog that held their own, and some people are going to be into that.

Some of the MiGs were awsome machines, when you consider where they came from and when.
