Hmmm my 2c on Edumakayshun in SL?

Well... I think the users of the Campus sim should learn about llSetStatus - and in particular the SANDBOX flag.

I've learnt that spewing phys objects into neighbouring sims is AOK so long as its a class.

Actually I get Usagi's point. It makes sense in a way. Why would you pay someone a fee, no matter how small, for something you could as easily get yourself off of the Net? And I see a point to having a structured learning process.

VoIP would be nice too!
Language doesnt seem to be something you'd want to learn to SPEAK when all you're doing is TYPING. Like typing BOMB, TOMB, COMB. To someone not familiar with english, they might all sound alike. Its when you HEAR it the differences come clear.

LOL there is a guy running around in a group like" I don`t know english....." LOL It never surprized and more to the lengths people go to fool people they are non english speakers. LOL you think being a non native speaker is some sort of status symbol. Well After learning english for over 25+ years.being in my upper 30rds i wish i had ablities to talk and write better. But to fake it you don`t really is a sadness to it for attention.

Actually I notice most ppl in SL speak english rather well. Other languages would come in quite handy dealing with online gamers in other countries. Well if you want to be an ass about it.... fine with me. Somewhere you have the idea I'd think it's a status symbol?? Pfft, as if!

Also seems you missed my point. You already know english. What if you didnt? Would you be here? Would anyone understand you?

As for making a buck on SL... WOW! Seeing how a basic account gets a measly 50L & premium gets 500L, which at the rate the "market" is going, masses up to a whole what? $1? A quarter? A Nickel? And it's not even Lindens you "work" for! It's given! I'd say someone charging for a structured class is gonna be a real life Billionaire at that rate!! WOOT! ;)

Or I could be wrong- maybe you're tight-fisted with Lindens, saving up for that schmexy AV skin & Xcite add-on?

I do understand your point, my english is not that great but it gets me where i need. Well 50l a week well Upgrade or buy money for those freebie accounts. LLabs made it clear that weeky pay was no longer needed since event hosting payouts was no longer being supported by LLabs themselves.......................Pre jan 31,2005 in fact........ Problems those crappy money chairs really screwed up our game and look now people are lowering themselves to teach languges that are "FREE" over the internet and stealing people content( plagarism). In a unoranized low quility crappy VR world where people lag to death insome locations......... Not to forget LLabs will PR this crap to death about learning a languge on sl so we can grow even FASTER ( OH BOY  )Then having deal with OPENING a account wth SL buying a 2000l skin 300l or more for hair, body parts etc........ I know this because i see it everyday as a greeter on sl. your looking at MAYBE 6000l on the lower side in the cost of learning a languge on sl ! Its just plan NOSENCE...........Which ever way those people say " ITS NO DIFF THEN A COFFE SHOP etc...... BLA BLA BLA" Its still LOW QUILITY UNSTRUCTURED IN YOUR FACE RIPOFF! Its like when I go into a public location and see a western person teaching some unknowing japanese in rl like myselve. say 5000 yen for 30mins ..........Its still the same people that are coming here and appling the same rabbit shit here. But the only different is its a FREE VR WORLD with free accounts..........BESIDES WHO THE HELL knows who is behind those avies teaching japanese/german/chinese etc......maybe some high school dropout stealing data ( plagarism)off a anothers person Copy written website..........

My grand point to this is, low life people is bound to reach SL and applie the same rip off ideas to that work in rl to sl...........We need structure and safey not another problem that is going on in the Movie rental concept on sl.......... Downloading of illegel movies and having SL owner these copies for their own gain and the movies industry gets shit...DOes SL do anythign about this problem NO! (wil they do anythign with plagarism languge and safe guarding people stupid enough to pay not with Lindens monies but with credit crds and paypals etc. HARD CASH NO LINDEN MONIES)****** NO! WHats going to happen at the end to sl is illegel content of all sorts.........Languge concept on sl wil fall to the same Low scum sucking people that we steal all sort of RL content and making a living off it on sl.........Tod69 Again thanks for dealing with my writing:) Have a wonderful day.really:)

at lunch yesterday we talked about the enormous potential of immersive language learning in Second Life. For most people, the only way to become truly fluent in a language is to live among native speakers. In Second Life, you could faithfully recreate a French Cafe as part of a language school and create that kind of immersion for students. This would be a much more affordable alternative (if not a substitute) for the real thing...cool stuff!

Ok jesse its wonder concept on sl but "WHAT IF" The same problems with people using second life as say "GOM" and then LLabs does a 180 turn and says NO MORE! Because LLabs feels "SAY we not making money and we are stoppin the concept of languge learning because people are either abusing the idea of languge concept and LLabs is not making as much as they should be bla bla bla. I believe you and all the rest at LLabs REALLY better have some fail safes before selling this concept as a PR tool. Just food for thought jesse.

faithfully recreate say any world wide location like the structure in"pisa" china great wall" germany`s octfeast etc.are all wonder new ideas which stimulates the minds and make us feel like we really are in thoses locations.

Thanks for reading :)

It's wonderful to find Lindens traversing and commenting in the forums, Jesse! And I agree that using SL as a (semi)immersive learning experience would be fantastic. I think one of the biggest obstacles to this, though, is what to do about audio. I know there's an audio program for educators in SL, but how to get student oral feedback is the question. For what it's worth, though...I kind of like SL as it is, with texting and IMs. I think it's a good reminder that SL isn't, and shouldn't, be real life. Equipping everybody with speech capabilities would be troublesome. Allowing only registered teaching places to have audio capabilities would solve this perhaps.

I think Skype is sufficiently low-processor to run in addition to SL. That combined with SL might work well. I think LL has enough development to worry about to think about duplicating some existing functionality at the moment. :)

Before we can reach any cozy level in this concept area on sl. LLabs needs to address more indepth impacts then just add another "money chair/dance pads ( DI )concept......" Learning another languge is wonderful but you know the outcome will be more neg then pos after people find ways to loot or abuse this as most do after awhile.

Food for though

Hi Kayura,

thank you

Without reading the whole thread (I think I'm getting sick and should hurry to bed), I'm going to plug the KanaMaster, which I didn't make, but picked up at the Dwellget store in Taco. It's more or less a flashcard system for learning Japanese hirigana and katakana.
