Are individual SL businesses fungible?

After checking out this thread where AnsheChung.com got its main avatar banned I am wondering to myself whether or not Linden Lab considers individual SL businesses fungible.

The prevailing wisdom would seem to indicate that spending a boatload of money in SL would get a given user (or business) some sort of tasty exemption from the rule of law LL establishes for the general player base. This seems more than reasonable, as a reality of business and common sense.

Still, that thread, assuming that it's not a silly joke, really provokes the question: are we all fungible in Linden Lab's eyes? Who loses if we are?

Well, typically when I pay my kickbacks to a linden, I expect special treatment. :D Rules dont apply to me.

Fungible? Does that mean "able to be made into a fungus"?

Well, certain people (can't name names) have played very fast and loose with Linden Labs. I suspect LL has been wanting to rap some knuckles, shot over the bow, that kind of thing.

It's all unfortunate, but likely necessary. At the end of the day, this is not our world.

Sort of. I think it's an airship made of Portabella mushrooms, which drops poisonous Deathcaps onto unsuspecting Mega-Barons.

We are all bound by the same rules here - or at least should be.

If someone is given special treatment when these rules are broken, does it not naturally follow that there would be cries of "FIC"?

As we're always told.... size isn't important....

At some point the balance of your financial value vs your asshattery must be weighed.

Additionally, if you don't pay your damn bills on time and are continually held up as an example of a top grossing SL business, etc, it could get annoying to the one waiting to get paid. Especially if you hold the funds in some alt and just want the company to jump through a few hoops to accomodate you so that they can get paid.

Also, if anyone like me is in charge, it would be too much fun to pass up an opportunity like this.

I am afraid Enabran, you'd have got some more sensible replies if you hadn't used a word we all had to rush to the online dictionary to understand. Even having looked it up, I am not certain I understand the nuances of "fungible".

If you mean should Linden Lab regard a player with several Alts as one account, and replace her internal accounting with an assumption that if the money is somewhere in her complex web of Alts then she is good for her tier...then no. I disagree absolutely with what someone posted to the thread you refer to, that this indicates poor business practices on Linden Lab's part. It indicates a disregard for the rules that the other residents live by, but more than that, it indicates very lax business practices on the part of the resident. LL's account management should be blind to that: they shouldn't have to delve in order to know whether a resident is solvent overall, the money should be in the right account at the right date.

I had quite a discussion recently with the player in question, in which it was asserted that LL knew and endorsed the practice of selling land that could not be sold under the rules. Even though it was against the rules. It seems that the attitude is that LL would "stop" anyone from doing something they really didn't want them to do. Well... maybe they have.

If the question you are asking us is whether it is all equal to LL - that they don't care who buys what as long as they have the business...well I really hope that this isn't true. I hope that good behaviour and good business practices will be rewarded, and valued, especially when these potentially have a knock-on effect to so many other people.

If what you are asking is whether we are all, essentially, spiritually and philosophically, interchangeable, then the answer is yes. The oneness of all leads one to assume that we are, ultimately, part of the same thing, and therefore, in a very real and practical sense, interchangeable.

That is not what I'm asking. This isn't a broadly-philosophical question. This is a discussion of businesses.

That is the closest you came to identifying the point of my question. I'm simply asking if Linden Lab will put the interests of the product and company in general above those of individual, if heavy, spenders. This, under the assumption that the market abhors a vacuum and the exit of one troublesome and annoying business will mark the arrival of ten more willing to work for their own piece of the action.

It's hardly an uncommon word or obscure concept.

Dunno what to tell you, there, because I think you've just managed to over-think it. That an asset is fungible simply indicates that it is not appreciably different from any other given asset in a given pool of similar assets and can thus be used, yes, interchangeably.

fungible
1 : being of such a nature that one part or quantity may be replaced by another equal part or quantity in the satisfaction of an obligation <oil, wheat, and lumber are fungible commodities>

2 : INTERCHANGEABLE

Despite the above disclaimer... it IS, after all, April Fool's Day. I suggest taking the entire thread with a massive boulder of salt.

Rules should apply the same to all.

but

A business should be at least a bit flexible and humane enough to work around occasional problems.
