New Enter-Key "functionality"

Who else thinks all the new behaviors of the enter key are totally confusing?
I think they should change it back so that the enter key only confirms text in a text field, or opens up the chat bar if no text field is selected. The only new thing about the new enter-key behavior I like is that you can close the chat bar with it. But having two differently shaded highlight buttons on the screen, pressing enter to open and close the inventory, etc, is unnecessary.

p.s. anyone else crash SL by hitting enter too many times? :P

Like many Second Life design issues, the previous functionality was easy to understand: ENTER opened and brought focus to chat, ESC closed chat if it was in focus. ESC still removes focus from the IM window, so if you were in a chat and IM just ESC, ENTER and you are back to open chat.

Could you explain that? I don't understand what you are describing by two differently shaded highlight buttons.

So far the new behavior seems confusing to me.

To demonstrate... First open the chat bar so that Chat is highlighted bright yellow. Then click on say, the Inventory button to open it up, then click on it again to close it, and it is highlighted with a darker yellow. Now your enter key is hijacked to open and close your inventory.

This behavior is apparantly the same inside the Edit window, affecting all the checkboxes and text fields inside there. So be careful with those permissions :o

Man people don't realize how GOD DAMN BAD THEY HAVE IT.

If LL would stop focusing on freakin little bells & whistles and fix the BUGS of SL, then people wouldn't be bitching to them as much.

How about right now they go back a version, and then fix all the bugs they have, then once thats done, they can move up a version again, and then fix all the bugs, move up another version, fix all the bugs etc, not move up 10 versions then add some more bugs DAMIT!

they are trying to bring you the future of everything and here you go, nitpicking

every little update brings them this much closer to that end

you are mistaking features you do not understand for bugs

maybe if you tried some positive reinforcement, you would realize its not broken at all and you are being handed everything

just enjoy all the good that comes with changes and let go of the past

I don't recall seeing it mentioned that we can Tab from toolbar button to toolbar button, which I don't believe we could before.

Oh wait, I just saw someone say that use of the Tab key to face the latest chatter was broken - this is probably connected.

As far as I know Lindens are aware of the keyboard focus problem and testing a fix for that.

the chat problem doesn't only appears with edit or inventory, I am a huge user of the free camera (yes the little camera option box ;) ) and each time I click on it I'm out of chat and when I try to talk I end up jumping, flying, moving around, etc ... unexpectedly and it is A BIT annoying.

The enter key functionality is absolutely broken, as far as I am concerned. I see no value at all in the menu bar buttons refusing to release focus like that! Whoever dreamed this one up ought to be forced to spend all day attempting to actually USE the interface that they screwed up.

Sheesh...

I don't mind innovation and new features, if they actually WORK. This change does nothing constructive that I can see. It just makes everything harder to use.

To the Lindens: we're not asking for a fix, we just want it changed back to normal.

I hate how the tab key no longer makes you look at who talked last. It now scrolls through the buttons at the bottom. :-(

Actually I would like to see them take back this last totally worthless and horrid "update". There was nothing I found worth while in it and texturing is terrible now. Besides the fact they took the game down for the whole day for this. I have spent the day crafting and you have no idea my frustration level is at. I think they should sit back now and decide if they really need to do something rather then pumping out junk on a weekly basis weither the game needs it or not. And did I mention I crashed 4 times today over what? The enter key now??? Someone on the team better learn to Just Say No.

Without having studied the functions of the new features yet,
there are two things I have noticed that are a bit annoying.

I keep leaping into the air before chatting with people.

And when I click on the current texture in the change texture window it no longer goes to the spot of the current texture in my inventory location.

Overall what I want is for the interface to stop making automatic decisions for me, If I put the camera somewhere or
my cursor, or my inventory location, why does'nt it just stay there till I choose to move it again. I think it would be great
to have more control that way.
It seems like half of all my physical motions are getting back to where I was due to some automatic motion on the ui's
part.

But weren't you and thousands of others clamoring incessantly for the ability to tab through the buttons?

Sigh, while previous functionality was broken, we can't really tab through the buttons - you can't tab between rows of buttons.

They broke the old tab function and replaced it with a defective implementation of a different tab function.

And to the best of my recollection it wasn't tested in the preview grid, and it certainly wasn't announced in the way such a significant UI change ought to be - in the Linden announcements, and in a sticky in the General forum, and in the MOTD, etc.

Hate it.

Hate it..

. . .

Hate it hate it HATE IT.

What the hell kind of feature is that!? WHAT GOOD COMES OF IT?

Who in the hell suggested this? I doubt any member did, some developer at LL just decided to put it in there? WHAT?

LL need to listen to members more, and realize that we want bugs corrected, and the new feature once in a while. They feel the need to bring more features, only to have to fix more bugs, and shut the grid down for endless hours.

When I type and hit space bar, I jump in the air like an idiot or break out of an animation if I'm trying to type while hugging someone for example. I do this because there's no way to keep the chat bar up all the time without ENTER hiding it.

One of three things will fix this.

-DONT let the enter key hide the chat bar...what was wrong with the escape key doing this? (or the HUGE chat button that toggles the chat bar...you can't miss it and it does the same thing)

-have the chat bar automatically pop up if you start typing and your cursor isn't in an IM window, Inventory window, etc.

-offer a preference to freeze the chat bar in place (seems repetitive but not anymore with this new enter toggling system and the now repetitive CHAT button on the screen...maybe change the CHAT button to a lock/unlock CHAT BAR option?)

I really really hate that I have to pay attention as to whether the chat bar is up or not depending on when I last hit the enter key.

To the Lindens...to give you an idea of how bad this idea was...why not provide the same functionality in IM windows? Hit enter in an IM window and it closes...see how fast an uproar pops up in the forums.

I appreciate all the positives in the weekly updates but this enter/chat addition is a pure negative addition. If you want a keyboard way to toggle the chat bar...use a different key than a common key used in actually chatting...not the enter key...say maybe the ESC, ~ key or optional funtion key setting?

well the ENTER key has always been able to "open AND close/hide" the chat bar. In Preferences you could set it to do that so you didn't have to use ESC.

Though i think that should be optional if some people like using ESC.. that's fine!...

Anyway!!.. i otherwise agree... and really really want the ENTER key to work how it =used= to! and not how it does now.

i hate how if i've just been in my Inventory and then go to hit ENTER to type for the chat the ENTER key opens my INVENTORY.. or whatever else. It's very annoying!!

Enter key

While reworking the UI to use XML layout for the latest version, we moved to more industry standard keyboard behavior to support full keyboard accessibility. As a side effect, the ability to trigger buttons via the Enter key in a form (as you can do in any web browser or desktop application) mistakenly made its way to the toolbar. Toolbars and other UI elements that are always visible shouldn't take keyboard focus when clicked on. This is my fault.

We will replace the look at last chatter functionality with a different shortcut that doesn't conflict with standard UI keystrokes.

Our goal is to support keyboard access for disabled and power users and those who have wireless mice with batteries that die on them...:) The intent is to bring the SL UI up to par with other desktop applications, not make it harder to use, so I apologize for where we've misfired.

Hitting enter to close the chat bar was recommended to us by another MMO developer, and it seems to be something of a standard for games that have pop-up chat boxes. However, it does seem to be causing problems, so we're looking at rolling it into the "Close chat on enter" option which normally closes the chat bar *every* time you hit ENTER, not just on blank lines.

Comments, suggestions?
