ok i'm wondering is LL even supporting mac or what?
i get home from a 8 day vacation and SL ran perfect before that. I come home and i need to install an update, so sure i do. After installing the update i start SL and it runs fine, sure. The next day i play sl, it works for about 2 hours, after those hours i go see a friend and i end up getting a kernal panic, i'm like ok can happan. I restart the computer and try again and end up getting Another kernal panic, i have fixed my disk permissions reinstalled SL and outside SL everything works fine but when i start SL i get a hella lot of errors So far i have recieved 16 kernal panics and an unkown Crash wich almost wrecked my computer
i talked to the mac group and i found out i wsnt the only one i cant play SL now anymore couse each time i log in i get a KP after 10 seconds
-Thank you for another great update, Lindens
(and if you feel like saying "get a pc" dont be a moron keep it to yourself noone gives a shit)

I'm having absolutely no problems on a 2 year old G4 powerbook with 512 RAM... but I'm also running OSX 3.9. Are there any system/OS commonalites with those having problems?

At this point, I just recommend people wine SL. It seems a bit more stable and supported by proxy. In fact, this is the way I connect to SL on a regular basis.

From: Brent Linden Second, I would like to address the fear that Linden Lab will dump support for the Mac. In a nutshell, we won't. A few folks at LL are hard-core Mac fanatics (myself included) and we wouldn't let the company make a decision like that. Further, that's just not our style Please do not worry about Linden Lab dumping the Mac platform just because Macs can boot into Windows. We know there are some of you who would rather use an abacus to surf the web than boot a shiny new Mac into Windows.
Full post here... /164/21/110265/2.htmlLike most people, I have a crash free SL experience on all 3 of my Macs, Powerbook, MacBook Pro and iMac, but that's not to say other peoples problems aren't real. But Kernel Panics are nearly always created by combinations of hardware and driver faults hilited or brought to the users attention via apps that use a lot of resources ... like SL ! If you can, check your Panic Log ... /system/libray/logs/

Looks like Wine is coming to the Mac very soon too http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/There's also http://darwine.opendarwin.org/ but I think that'll be a real hassle to install ( if it works ) for most people. ... if Will Wrights Spore runs under Wine on OS X that'd be amazing ...

I've had no problems on my Core Duo iMac (2gb ram, 256mb video mem), even through the upgrades. I'm interested to know what's going on, though. I wonder if there is a way to get any debugging info (like what would be sent to LL after a crash). From: Eric Boccara (and if you feel like saying "get a pc" dont be a moron keep it to yourself noone gives a shit) Heh heh...if you were to "get a pc", SL might work better but everything else would go to hell!

From: Laukosargas Svarog Looks like Wine is coming to the Mac very soon too Huh. And here, I had assumed it already was. That's pretty nifty, though. Given SL runs in OpenGL, support has been pretty good (including sound to an extent). As for any direct3D games... ehm. Don't push your luck.

Quick "me too" post. My experience with SL on a Mac has been, for the most part, excellent. I am very appreciative of Linden Lab taking the time and making the effort to maintain a Mac version of the SL viewer.

Y'all are aware that many, many, many Lindens have Macs, right? Philip, Catherine, and Kelly for three I know right off the bat, and I'm sure there are many more.

Back around the time of 1.5, I used to have a bunch of crashes. Not anymore. I'm pretty much crash free on my Dual G5 Mac tower.
BTW, Kernal Panics typically only occur at the hardware driver layer. Sounds like you got some crap video card drivers installed. I've not seen a single Kernal Panic in over four years, long before I was even in SL.

Well remember, right now Macs are going through a full change in their infastructure (chip wise) and their os because of it - so outside of other hardware issues it could be that there's an instability with your system or mac as a whole (possibly) right now that's cuasing SL issues.

Well, if its a hardware issue- just replace the hardware If its drivers, update drivers. Simple.

Ram, Ram, Ram!!

My offhand guess is that the people who are having the worst crash problems don't have enough RAM in their systems. The memory requirements of SL have crept up.. the usual feeping creaturitis, plus people creating more and more complex places in-world. (The more avies and textures in an area, the bigger the memory footprint of your SL client will be.) You really want to have at least 1GB in your system (Mac, Windows, or Linux) for SL these days.
The symptoms of not having enough RAM vary by platform -- when it doesn't just crash, that is. The Windows client degrades somewhat gracefully; your frame rate just goes to hell as your system spends half its time swapping memory pages. (Watch the hard disk light; if you get more than an occasional flicker, you need more RAM.) The Mac client runs fine most of the time, but then COMPLETELY freezes for a couple of seconds at a time while swapping takes over. (Macs don't have a hard disk light, so you can't tell that way.) I haven't tried the Linux client on a system that doesn't have enough RAM, so I can't tell you what it does.

No issues on an older 2Ghz G5/2GB RAM/10.4.7 system here, other than my usual complaints about speed compared to my similarly spec'd PC. Both are quite stable, except when logins are stalled and then suddenly SL will gobble an entire CPU, but eh, I'm used to that.
