Very cool! I hope I will be able to see it. I don't get to see shiny.

You can't get shiny?!?
I'm afraid it's unlikely you'll get this in that case, 'tis what they call a pixel shader effect.:(

Now that's something I didn't know about. I wonder why shiny needs so much memory?

Lol, theres a way to disable it, I never used it a whole lot so I haven't bothered as of yet, and I'm getting more ram anyway.. But from people who have disabled the disabling of it it doesn't make that much difference.. There are some things they disable for users with 256mb of ram or less..

Pictures of ripple included, I hope.. Damnit, can't upload, still..

Doesn't it look lovely? I'm rather impressed by how well it looks.

However, I will say that it absolutely kills my graphics card. When I first logged into the preview grid, I got 5-9fps with the ripples on, but 25-30fps with the ripples off. I'm hoping that there's a detail option for the ripples, as I think the more detail shader causes my card to lag like that.

My frame rate drops from like 12 to 5.5 when I look at the water with ripples on. I find it odd though that our framerates are the same when looking at the water ripples even though it sounds like your setup is much better then mine if you get 25 - 30fps.

Very weird about framerate, im sat in ahern's pool on a jetski just playing lolol, with ripple on im getting 24.5fps with it off i get 35fps, yes thats a 10fps drop but this is only on an ati 9700 mobility, when i try it on my geforce 6800gt i dont see any framerate change at all

Yeah and RAM. Looking to toss in another gig and a shiny new GeForce 6800GT 256mb AGP (and a powersupply to back it up, my old 350watt can't handle that kind of load).

Oh good!

Edited to add: Having read now that it slows people down, sounds like something I will look at once and freeze up on. But - I will be able to look at it once!

Not to say that I don't love rippple, which I do ...

but that's not a reflection. That's the lower 3/4 of the cube underwater.

Thank you for that stunning insight - but notice the original poster said refraction - notice the side of the cube.

Here are some Mac comparisons:

Daytime - Mac G5 Dual 2.5 with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT (128 megs VRAM)

Daytime - Mac G4 12" PowerBook 867 Mhz with an nVidia GeForce4 MX (32 megs VRAM) Unable to turn ripple wave effect on in Preferences

Nighttime - Mac G5 Dual 2.5 with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT (128 megs VRAM)

I took these pictures on a Mac G5 Dual 2.5 with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT (128 megs VRAM).

Nighttime

I noticed this night-time difference myself - that it acts much more realistically at night, being much dimmer, with that really gorgeous glimmer.

I love it. I was testing framerate with it on/off, and didn't notice any difference - perhaps a half a frame per second at worst when looking at a lot of wter.

It definitely is an understatement! I am stunned at how gorgeous the effect is now. I saw it the other day in the first preview build, and it was nice, but reminded me a bit of a lava lamp. Now, the effect is practically photorealistic on my video card (Geforce 7800). Great job on the effect!
