You can give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
If you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a life.

Slap him in the head with a fish and it's just plain funny.

How do you handle panhandlers?

Tongs with long handles.

------ edit! ------

I spelled "tongs" "tongues" the first time.

Did someone quote the mispelled version?

Of course, if you mispell a word, or leave out the word most important to saying what you mean and meaning what you say, the probability of someone quoting what you typed is ONE HUNDRED percent.

Ive been playing this game for over a year with only being asked for money once.. UNTIL.. lately. This morning I was decorating my store and approuched by THREE different people asking for money and 2 of them while I was afk stayed there asking over and over demanding an answer.. also saw them in chat history asking basically anyone that came by for money. EEK. Not really sure what the best answer to give these people is? I mean in RL I , whether Im a sucker or not, if I have change .. give it. But its really hard to relay that symphathy to people that dont need the money for anything life sustaining like food or shelter. How do you handle it when strangers ask you for money? Do you give it? If you say no, how do you go about it in a way that makes you not look like a jackass?

I tell them no, and then I suggest they find employment and suggest clubs and such if they don;t like that idea, I tell then get thee to a sandbox and start building!:)lol I never give out money to panhandlers in SL:)

Had a newbie come up to me the other day with a full on penis and a screwed up AV. He claimed he needed $100 to fix his avatar because he bought something earlier. I pointed out "edit appearence", but he insisted that he needed the $100 and that he couldn't fix his avatar otherwise.

Well, as I was playing one of my poorer alts (oops... alt? what is that?) I didn't actually have the money to give him in any case. Then he got rude. Fortunately I was able to TP out of there before the guns came out.

Generally I do not give money to panhandlers. I have a freebie box full of useful and interesting goodies that I give them instead. I do occasionally give people gifts at random but never when solicited.

I don't give money to just anyone, but my greeter Jennifer gave me 400 linden to start out with.

If I come across newbies who really are interested, and I think are stayers, I'll give them the same amount.

The last one has only been in for 3 weeks and shes doing better than I after 4 months, so it definately was worth a few cents on my part. :-)

Otherwise is advice on Campchairs.

I tell them what I learned in my search for gainful employment of the talentless. Dance, Host, Greet and if you have ANY talent at all, for god's sake USE IT.
And stay out of casinos.

Also, some of the best things in SL are free. E-chute: $0L. Boost from Sky-Diving machine: $0L. Forgetting that you're falling near a hill so your chute will only open after you hit the ground: Priceless.

What if you sell him a fish at a price that is practically giving it away? Or, if your friend doesn't like fish, what if you sell him some cigarettes?

Give a man a fire and he's warm for a few hours.
Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Thanks Yiffy-

I think from now on, I'll be offering panhandlers a choice between 'a fish' or 'a fishing pole'. :D

And you know what else? I didn't see you jumping on anyone else's post who assumed panhandlers=newbs or else panhandlers=scammers. Why didn't you point out to those talking about money trees that this isn't about newbs?

Because i like you *smooooch* :D

Since I usually get approached on my own land, I handle panhandlers for $L the same as I handle requests for sex or bad manners.

(1) IM - soliciting isn't allowed in this sim
(2) IM - I've told you that what you're doing is not allowed here. if you continue you will be ejected and banned
(3) eject/ban

No muss, no fuss - and it gives the person fair warning.

------------

RL, I will usually drop some change on someone who asks, especially when the weather sucks. They may be scamming. They may be using it for drugs or alcohol, but that's their decision. If I was homeless, maybe all I'd want was my next drink too.
