Hello my fellow Essellians I am a little over a month new and I recently bought some land in a quiet little sim. About a week after I built my happy little home, I looked on the map to see someone had bought up the rest of the sim available and has written CASINO in HUGE red letters across the entire sim. Now it really doesn't bother me so much that I would try to start any trouble over it or say the the person who did it is a bad guy, but it just seems really Trashy (capital T). Is there a policy in place to prevent people from spamming the map like this? I understand the owner is a casino guy and that is where his income comes from, but doesn't it seem like that would speak on it's own? Thanks in advance for any responses If this has been covered in a previous post my apologies, I searched for hours before starting this thread...

There appears to be no policy against 'spamming' the map. Most folks have just had fun with it.

hehe yes I saw the Rausch pic when I was digging around looking for posts on this subject I have asked around a bit and it seems my best course of action is to just not look at the map or fly around that level. My home is built around the 730M level so I guess I can avoid it (but I still know it's there). Another thing I could have done was checked to be sure that I was buying land in an established residential area, which I did not. Live and learn I suppose

Snaptick, one of the things about SL is it's everchanging. I've seen a lot of things that were Residential pains stay for a few weeks, maybe a few months, and then go away. There's no guarantee on that, but one can be confident in their own patient and graces, and realistically, to make the best out of a situation. In this instance, do you know the owner of the casino personally? Have you talked to him about it? One brightside in this instance is, it can be viewed from above but isn't as intrusive as some other things might be, for example, big walls of CASINO CASINO CASINO signs facing you. I don't know of a specific policy covering these things, because of how many ways it can be interpreted. Someone could write CASINO in Chinese and Resis who don't know Chinese might see it as just a funny squiggle or as "art", even. I think since this whole "map art" thing is still new, there's a lot of stability yet to be gained in the longterm. P.S. I like the term "Essellians".

There is or was a place with the word "POOP" on the map, near some W-Hat property.
Who knows what delights await us?

I don't see why map spamming is a problem, it's not like you spend all day looking at the map. I rarely see any ads on the map, sometimes I do see "w00t" "for sale" and "hobo", but those don't bother me because they are above the clouds and I don't spend more than 10 seconds looking at the map.

If I were that Divine dude I'd be using it for propganda at this point. Not alot people around him are autoreturn enabled... or smart enough to move.

I think it's kinda neat to be able to write things or show pictures on the map. That's what TSO and roof art was all about.

There is no policy at all on what you build as long as it's on your own land. Being visible from somewhere other than your own land has no bearing.

Snapstix. I apologize
01-09-2006 02:47
Snapstix I do apologize. that is me who he is talking about in this thread. I purchase this land with intentions of building a casino and have owned much of the bordering Sim where my city resides. Unfortunatley If I didn't own 44k sqm of this sim I would take the sign down immediatley.. but I'm trying to have a return on my investment and having a gigantic sign that someone can see from space seemed like cheap means of advertisement to me. I know I have made alot of people who had recently build homes in the area pretty mad. but I watched this sim sit vacant for almost three months and have been saving up to buy the land for awhile and when I finally did and start developing it I recieved many complaints from people around me. But my arguement is if you don't like it..you should have bought it before me. I am also being generous enough to donate 14k sqm to people to use on the sim as a Sandbox and Shooting range. Which I think is mighty generous of me. all my land was designed to provide entertainment to other second life users. I spent alot of hard earned RL money to keep my city afloat and don't mean to ever offend people. If you have a problem please feel free to come talk to me about it and see what compromise we can make about it. I'm a very nice and understanding person. Just have to talk to me about it and not past comments about it on the forums.
Thank you , Colin Nilsson (the big red casino sign jerk)

I think anyone who pays enough tier and owns enough land to make an appreciable, permanent message on the map should be able to do what they want with it.

Colin ya figured it out lol - yep I guess it was you but I can't complain, after reading all these answers I can only appreciate what he is doing... and since I have been greedily buying up any spare land in the sim anyway I can live with it. btw, Colin is quite the friendly and gregarious guy, so any complaints I had are now nil As soon as he saw the post he IMed me in world and was very nice about it - and if it brings ppl to our sim, so be it, we all like visitors excuse my ignorance on this subject - the sign has actually grown on me - thread closed!
