From: Margaret Mfume I hope Pathfinder's Picks, Infonet, the Helping H.A.N.D., a link to Flipper's alternative event listings site and any other developed package that you or anyone else invests the time and effort to generate gets placed there. There's certainly enough room at the telehubs from what I've seen, and the more information out there the better. agreed

I really don't have a problem with this at all. In fact I think it's rather cool. It's no different than if LL decided to distribute information by paying to have stuff published in a resident run newspaper or fan site. Whatever other editorial content is in the newspaper is immaterial, really. This isn't the only way they're going to put information out there. So what if infonet also contains a subjective best of list?

InfoNet charges to place ads with them, and now they're going to be at every former hub in SL, so what other forms of advertising are they offering to compete with this? Just curious what you may have heard when you say it won't be the only way they're going to put information out.

Squagmire is a pretty cool and interesting person.
That said, I've had and still harbor one fear for a system like Infonet. Namely:
Is Second Life really stable enough on assets to handle a distributed system running entirely on the tech?
Considering we had llGiveInventory passing shut down for a good week or two due to griefer behavior, I'm more than a little worried about putting all the proverbial eggs in one basket.
Infonet is a really interesting system, but if the underlying asset server coughs up blood or one of the commands gets throttled by a patch, it's pretty much SOL.

I assume any information put out through infonet would also be put out through the forums. I can't imagine they'd release anything only through infonet. LL already offers classifieds, and they charge for them also so I'm really not sure what the issue is.

...and a new thread on the same topic is needed so that the ideas presented here are not noticed...

The issue that I see is that this gives InfoNet a huge advantage over other means of advertising. Why pay for an ad anywhere else (Metaverse Messanger, SLB, Snapzilla... etc etc.) if InfoNet is going to be the only one available at every hub? That's quite an advantage.

Personaly, I am not too happy about the decision to put InfoNet in telehubs simply because I do not see InfoNet as an ideal way to officialy relay information.
Scripts suck for relaying heavy data. Notecards suck even more for displaying it.
If anything, i'd prefer a real, built-in client functionality for displaying information and announcements rather then rely on textures and/or notecards.
For now, using an external website would be a much better solution.

have to say, I was greatly amused by the section I found called 'Second Hell Tourbus', which lists the writers (who?) worst places in SL. Especially the notecard I was given, which said 'Due legalities and unclear facts, this article has been removed from circulation.'. But still had the name of the place clear as day.

Remember kids, there's no such thing as bad publicity. I'm sure LL is getting confirmation that traffic is through the roof and people will and do check out those InfoNet terminals.... and I'm sure your part in giving the whole thing the traffic it needs to continue is appreciated. (grin)
