buy a prim penis first thing, wear it all the time and NEVER take it off. This will show women how manly you are.

I would look up The Shelter and drop by as soon as you can. Its a place set up specifically to assist and give advice and support to new residents. In addition to that, you should drop over to Yadni's Junkyard for tonnes of cool free stuff. Many stores will offer free items and some even offer top quality items like hair and skins and clothes to people that are new for free or very reduced prices, so be sure to look for that when out shopping or exploring too.

If you would like to learn about building and creating in SL, I suggest looking up The Ivory Tower of Primatives. Their tutorials in world are supposed to be wonderful.

Remember, the "Search" tool is your friend. Use it often and throughly to find all sorts of neat stuff to see, do and buy in SL.

I also recommend doing a serach in the groups tab to look up any interest groups or hobbies you may have that might have groups running in SL. You will find most anything you can have an interest in will have groups for it here. To be honest, I find that residents stick around longer if they find groups and friends early. Use the group tool for that, and easing into the community will be far easier...and you will be hooked on SL even faster. =P

Welcome and good luck.

EDIT: In addition, take the humour in the Forums with a huge grain of salt. Many here post silliness that is not meant to offend, just be silly, so it helps to assume most things are humour unless indicated otherwise. Will save you much frustration. In general, SL residents are a wonderful, helpful and friendly lot. Hope you like your new home here. =)

BE CAREFUL on what you buy, alot of ppl sell free things.
Get all the free stuff you can at first than look to buy stuff.
(no one told me this.. cry)

Go to search than go to events and go to as many classes as possible so you can do things yourself in the game (snicker i said game!)

uhmm... hmmm, i wouldn't bother buying a house, i would simply make one, its way easy, and sandboxes are your friend when it comes to a place to build...

uhmm... uhmmm..... thats all i can think of at the moment.

It's a free, self-guided tutorial place, you get a bunch of notecards and there's a lot of detailled and very helpfull examples rezzed.

The Ivory Tower is free. It's a multi-story building with "stations", each station a tutorial on a different method of twisting/linking prims. You get notecards with each station that you can keep/discard as you want and that explain things very well.

I landmarked it when it was at the old location, and I moved my landmark when the Tower moved. I go back for refreshers every once in a while when I'm trying to figure out how to do something complicated and I always come away feeling like I learned something!

Possibly THE best build in SL.

Drop by and see for yourself!

Honestly, I have never been to the Ivory Tower of Primatives myself, so I can't speak to the method of thir training. It is definately free, though I am sure they love donations. I know of the Ivory Tower by way of hundreds of mentions by other people I know and have met, which usualy go something like: "OMG! I found this plcae, The Ivory Tower of Primatives, and it like soooo made everything make sense! It was amazing!"

I myself learned to torture prims the old fashioned way back in the dark ages of SL when we all had to mine our own prims from the dirt and all we had were boxes and spheres. I trained myself, unlike you youngens today. And I did it uphill...in the snow...both ways. =P

You mean you came to one of my building classes/contests?

I remember that... had to buy a pickaxe from Philip Linden in Prelude, or else you'd have to slave for months to buy one on the mainland.

You had snow! When I were but a wee lass, we'd 've killed for snow! All we had was prim-dandruff from older players already turning crusty... And rezzing them... even that cost... IF there were any left after the prim-barons had their way. You youngin's 'ave it easy.

Another thing I just thought of for someone new. Things you buy are usually in a box you have to sit on the ground and right click than choose open.
and some you have to chose edit and go to contents and copy them all..

Otherwise you might end up wearing it
But sometimes its moved to your inventory as a folder vs a bag or a box.

also, putting on shoes or anything else. I had a problem with my hair disappearing and everything i was wearing when i would drag a folder of an item say shoes onto myself to wear them. It seems you need to drag things individually onto yourself to wear them and not a folder.

don't feel bad when you wear a box on your head.. everyone has done it..

Sometimes the box looks better than the contents.

lol i go unusually slow to get dressed these days, i don't like box hair :P
and some of those boxes are kinda pretty, there was a store that had it as a shopping bag with tissue paper, very cute, to wear? no! lol

But when you do rez something on the ground, always do it in edit mode (control - 3), because it may not be a box. Some object names are misleading. And, some objects are invisible. If you rez an invisible, you will have a hard time finding it again, unless you are in edit mode first.

One other piece of advice, always clean up after yourself. If you rez a box on the ground, please have the courtesy and respect for the owner of the land you are on, to take it back into inventory or delete it when you are done.

And if you do rez something like a bracelete (which i did) and not realize that it didnt' need to be unpacked and its to small for you to click on to pick it up.. dont' worry it will evantually be returned to you by the owner of the store.

Don't forget these really good places to learn too (from a notecard I give out in world):

Want to learn about all about textures? Check out Robin Sojourner's excellent tutorial at:
??Texture tutorial by Robin - Sojo, Benten (25,115,28)

Lot's of info there from one of SL's premier designers.

Want to learn about scripting? Check out the University of Mystica at:
University of Mystica - Dedicate, Mystica (61,173,24)

They regularly hold classes to teach you everything you need to know to be a scripter in SL

Want to learn how to do cool particle effects? Check out The Particle Laboratory at:
The Particle Laboratory - Teal (202,53,22)

You can also check the events listing and look for events hosted by *TeaZers U*. They do multiple classes every day on just about every aspect of SL

When you're ready to buy First Land, do it with a group of friends in a block.

If you all intend to flip it immediately, remember that if someone's willing to come running to pay you L$2000 for the plot you can easily get more. ;)
