RP communities

What sort of RP communities are around? I have only wandered around the world a little so far and a Gorean city I was at seemed to have everyone in RP mode.

Anyways just seeing what kinds of things are out in the world to do with RP whether its casual or serious. Naughty or nice

There are a dozen or more Gorean communities, with varying interpretations of Norman's fantasy, and a wide variety of players of the different tribes/races/professions in it. As a wandering scribe, I'm studying their culture and laws and can provide more if you are interested.

ElfHaven has three sims with folks in RP, though its less doctrinaire than the Gorean RP.

Several folks have attempted "dungeons and dragons" style role play communities to lesser degrees of success, perhaps because they lack a unifying known theme and doctrine.

There is/was a Star Trek one. Not sure if it's still around or not.

There's a growing community of Victorian SF and Steampunk fans. We have about a dozen individuals that are in-character all the time. Come to Withnail Academy to meet up with like-minded individuals.

I've known several small-scale "tabletop-style" roleplaying groups, and ran a couple. I personally prefer these, but since they tend to be done with friends, it's not as easy to find games as just plopping down in a free-form RP sim.

Numbakulla is still up and running. In point of fact you do play yourself in the game, but it is you as shipwrecked explorer, complete with fancy exploring clothes.

It is free to play, and much more fun with a group than on your own, although it can be played as a singelton. Go to the sim, get yourself an explorer's notebook and you're off!

Sort of as a counter to New Holstice, I'm Co-founder of a Star Wars Sith group devoted to RP. If being a Jedi isn't your cup of tea, you can always contact me about being a Sith. We're still new, though, so small.

I will say the only thing I am not interested in is Jedi or Star Wars, hehe I will look more into the others.

I'm putting together an Amber RP group for RP in the multiverse created in fiction by Roger Zelazny, but will announce when it's up and running.

Theme... Amber's odd, you can do anything in it, so it fits very well into SL. Goth chick, medieval, demons, spells, robots... it fits, oddly enough. Core things are mostly medieval. There is a coherent theme to it, though you don't need to even know about that In Character to participate, which means, I imagine, a lot of the Amber group members will be out there interacting IC with people who don't even know there's a RP going on... and it would work! Crazy, experimental, etc.

I'm aware that one of the hurdles to participating in an RPG based on books is that everyone won't have read the books. To that end, this group will have it's own website with the details and a discussion board for keeping folks informed for their own freeform purposes, as well as knowing how to get into various plots going on.

Anyway, folks interested in being notified and kept in the loop themselves, please IM me in SL with interest and/or questions. If you have a hankering to help be a GM/Facilitator, also let me know (knowledge of the books and theme will be a must with those people).

United Federation of Second Life is the largest and oldest Star Trek group in SL (although we've been through one name change). We have several different continuous roleplay sagas going on, which people participate in via regularly scheduled RP sessions every week. I myself am not much of a roleplayer, so I can't comment much on the experience itself (I just provide environments and costuming like full-size starships and uniforms), but if you're interested, Cobramax Mechanique would be the one to speak to. He's the one in charge of RP activities for the group.

Wow, I had forgotten all about Amber. We once tried to play the pen & paper RPG for Amber way back when. My gaming group at the time had one major stumbling block: our friend who, no matter which game, bitched and moaned because he wanted to be a minotaur with wings in full plate mail. I think we shelved Amber when we realized that there wasn't a really great reason why he couldn't do it.

I'd be interested to see how this pans out, I'll have to keep an eye out for this as you get it off the ground.

There's an unseelie fae RP group that has been around awhile as well.

I do like the idea of the elf communities myself.

Being a sylph doesn't exactly lend itself to the sci-fi stuff, and I'm a bit flighty, too.

Any of you think a sylph would be an especially good fit? Help a poor new tiny little winged girl out?

Wow..I used to love the Amber novels. And it seems like SL would be a great place to RPG it since they can end up in all sorts of different worlds. Great idea!

Though as an aside, Zelazny's "Creatures of Light and Darkness" is still his best and one of my all-time fave books.

Actually, thinking about it, the perfect books for roleplaying in second life would be Michael Moorcock's Dancers at the End of Time series. There you have people who have 'power rings' which can create anything they wish. If you read the books, with its descriptions of a surreal landscape with fantastic buildings, built overnight and torn down just as quickly, it is impossible not to be reminded of Second Life.

I haven't read that one in a while.

ooo thanks everyone! Found the Elvenglen...tried to join, but since they were having a huge party, the lag was too bad and couldnt ...however it does seem like a GREAT place!!

Visited ElvenGlen last night and it did look quite nice.

Have been glad to see many RPers around in this game.
