Forum lag... I wonder...

A thought occurred to me. Rare, yes, but bear with me.

Over the last week or so, the forums have been dreadfully laggy, much worse than normal, with pages refusing to open and sometimes minutes for anything to happen.

The forums are connected to the resident account database, to retrieve the poster names.

We have had an influx of 'new accounts', mostly fakes, alts and griefers, due to LL's stupid new policy.

Therefore the signup/account database server has been working a lot harder.

Could this be the source of the delays affecting the forums?

Lewis

Forum performance is much more likely to be affected by how many people are browsing, running searches and hitting refresh on the page than by having to verify your login information once when you sign on.

With the furore about the new changes, I think it's just that there is more activity on the forum (simply hitting refresh to see if your favourite rant thread has had replies, for example), making them struggle a bit.

Finding one indexed logon ID in a table of even a million entries takes milliseconds.

Lewis, the forums have been like this for a month at least so I don't agree that that's the main cause, although I'm sure it contributes a little.

There are no enterprise grade solutions for message boards and Vbulletin is meant to be very inefficient. You have to basically keep throwing more servers at it to keep it responsive.

Based on this morning's board traffic, we can now safely assume that the forum lag is an intentional "time sink" inserted by the Lindens so that, when one of the Lindens posts anonymously and exposes the REAL problems with unverified griefers and spikes in AR volume, the thread can be deleted before too many people even get a chance to read it and respond.

Thread gone, problem covered up, nothing to see here. Move along.

The forums seem to have two speeds today. Slow. And dead stop. I think Linden Lab needs to change it's name to Linden Lag.

More than that I reckon.

Come on, LL, it doesn't look very good to potential investors, does it? (Although I'm not sure whether you'd want potential investors reading the forums anyway, bunch of reprobates that we are here :) )

This was already given a twice over by LL in Second Life Answers. Short summary: they have other priorities.
