I love that my creativity has returned since I've been here, when I thought it had been extinguished by disappointment and personal tragedy. I love that I can feel again.

I liked all the reasons you posted, but that one in particular.

All the drama-queens on the forums usually keep me from posting at all......but i have to say , Fade, your post is the best ever and will be for a long time.

Thumbs up.

I enjoy a lot of things here, but my special pleasure is my late-night sandbox patrol.

I'm a fairly old dude, SL-wise, and I *still* can't count on going to a sandbox without being awe-struck by somebody's imagination and creativity.

I have met some of the most interesting people in Sandboxes. And I've seen some of the craziest, coolest, and just amazing things in those too.

Hehe i notice that too. I picture it as sort of a fantasia. We can use our minds to make this world into anything. However some of our imaginations bring negative opinions by others. >.>

And they're also handy to have around when you're dealing with crocodiles. Makes Rikki Tikki Tavi look like a piker.

Proof that even otters can be dangerous in packs. >D

I enjoy that as well, and talking to people. If only there were more time to chat, then people would know I'm not just around to see off the bad guys. :D

I dreamed about someting like SL since I was a child. Long before PC's and long before VCRs.

After almost two years, and many changes, I still enjoy logging on.

I love that it brings the world close to me. Australia's a long way from pretty much anywhere.

I love that it attracts more talented, creative people than I could hope to meet in such a short period of time in RL.

I love looking at the time, realising it's 5 in the morning, and I've been building for 12 hours.

I love the feeling of serenity I get when I stare out into the ocean void, even when the neighbours are shouting at each other.

I like being able to see the sun shine when it's raining, and see snow in the peak of summer. (And I had my first ever white Christmas!)

I love that my realities are increasingly becoming blurred.

I love that my creativity has returned since I've been here, when I thought it had been extinguished by disappointment and personal tragedy. I love that I can feel again.

I love that my avi can do things that some days my body won't allow anymore.

Just gotta agree with everything said here Fade. Being Aussie as well, I relate totally to that sense of distance that it brings, and how SL takes that away, and makes the world closer.
I have celebrated Halloween, had a White Christmas, been on Easter egg hunts, all things I could never have done without SL.

But your post also made me cry. I will be forced to leave SL for who knows how long in a week or two, as we will be homeless in RL. So while you made me think of all the wonderful opportunities to create, things I have done, friends I have made in SL that I would have had no hope of ever having RL, it also reminded me utterly of what I am losing too.

Great post Fade :D

I think one of the reasons so many people do grouse and moan about the problems in SL is because we do love it, and because we expect so much of it.

If another program on my computer goes down, or an online game is off for maintanance or crashes, it illicits little more than a Pfft from me, and I go do something else. But SL has so much potential, and invokes so much of my creativity and imagination, that it becomes very frustrating when you want to realize that potential and can't.

If we didn't care about SL, we wouldn't care about it not being available or not living up to its potential.

Jonquille I very much agree with this observation... and I think time moves so fast in SL we expect everything to happen right now!

Sure was worth posting to hear all your happy stories though!

I was in this situation just a couple of weeks ago, and it killed me!!!! I was more worried about not being able to log on than the fact that I was looking at the street. It only ended up being a couple of weeks or so, and I found a place just in time to not be homeless (with just a day up my sleeve, and I was grateful we have the social support we enjoy in Australia), but waiting for my internet connection - that couple of weeks was an eternity... and I missed my friends here horribly.

I hope you find a place to live soon Midnite!

I have been waiting ,dreaming of the metaverse since I first read snow crash

I love that LL made it happen and all of us made it exist

I love the pure joy and fun I have promoting live music.

I love the friends I have made here - some the best minds and best hearts I could ever know

I love the fact that I can be anyone I want with the snap of a finger

and I love that a platform exists where I as a web producer, along with my talented team can create immerisve environments that bring joy to residents , merge Rl and Sl, and actually make a full time good living in here all day.

I just want to take a moment and say thanks LL and thank all of you for existing

I love SL because I can dress the way I really want to without a critical husband, parents, well meaning friends and so on butting in.

Has anyone ever seen the quote from Henry David Thoreau that goes something like this..."When I see a man approaching me with obvious good intentions I run for my life"?

... being able to fly, teleport and have fantastic adventures such as dancing underwater with fish swimming around, building with dragons in a sandbox, and walking in castle gardens. Dancing and playing follow the leader by telaporting is something I love. I love chatting with friends. I love seeing really creative creations including art galleries and museums. And I love my hubby (RL); even though, all he ever does in SL is camping, which is a bore. I love the waterfront welcome area and Althel's Jazz club. I've had bad times in SL just like RL, but my SL friends are there to IM and often help out.

Even shopping is fun because I love finding bargins at yard sales such as Yadi's Junk Yard and Odds and Ends dollar store. And, I believe that I'll love skydiving in SL and scripting after I learn them.

Torley: Aw. And we love being here with you!

I love that people enjoy my work here.

I love seeing something come together from the chaos of prims and dance to the order of my will.

I love seeing, among the pink-neon dross of clublife and plywood of abandoned builds, the glory of things like Apollo, and Allure, and all the various builds that talk less about profit and more about their maker's souls.

I love beauty, and I love that I can make it here despite being damaged in RL.

And I love Sasun, who is a glorious build unto her own self.

I dreamed about someting like SL since I was a child. Long before PC's and long before VCRs.

After almost two years, and many changes, I still enjoy logging on.

When I bought my first 8086 with green screen, I hooked up to a local BBS and realized, for the first time, that this thing was going to go places I couldn't even imagine. I started dreaming of a day when I could move around in a virtual world with real physics, where I could network with people from absolutely anywhere. I saw it start to gradually unfold, and then one day I woke up in Second Life and knew that the dawning was upon me.

I ran into a 1-day old newbie last night and after helping him out with some landmarks and advice, we ended up in a long conversation on William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and "lost in cyberspace" fiction. He'd come to Second Life after reading an article on virtual worlds. I have a feeling he'll be around a long time... and we both agreed that the only thing separating us from practically living online was enough CPU power to generate about 8 billion polygons per second.

That, and the whole muscle atrophy thing :)

I love it too! :)

What a great thread to reply to!
Of all the reasons listed by others, I have to say my personal favorite things about Second Life are connecting with the most interesting, creative people, and the blank canvas it provides for creative expression, no matter how skilled or unskilled. I've always had hobbies, such as photography, macrame, sewing, etc., but now here is a world, far from reality, that provides tools for that expression. I love being able to TP to whole new dimension of fantasy within seconds! No traffic jams-no car repairs or insurance, no sickness, etc, Without having to go to the mall, I have a wardrobe full of the cutest outfits, shoes & hair that I could never find in real world, and I don't even have to do laundry or ironing to find something great to wear! (Now when I look in my RL closet I have to **sigh**, because I can't find my favorite tie dye outfit in there!!) I joined SL last summer at the urging of RL friend, and SL helped carry me through an intensely traumatic event, creating for me a diversion that helped save what little sanity I have (LOL-wink wink) In SL I can be whoever I wanna be & change to something else at the drop of a folder! I love not HAVING to work, cook or clean! I have some incredible friends here I never would have met otherwise, and it's so much easier to "get together" with them than RL friends!
Ahhhh if teleporting were a reality!! LOL... I have to add that LL totally rocks to give us the freedoms we enjoy here.

Gotta love SL...!
04-24-2006 14:45
I rarely post in the forums, but this is a worthwhile thread...

Almost two years ago, I took a new job that I still love...but the job seriously has taken away my SL in-world time, allowing me only a few hours on a weekend here and there because I do a lot of travel. When I do get to login, I realize how much I appreciate the new creations and new perspectives the ever growing community has developed. As a builder myself, I marvel at the new creations, inspiring me even more to maintain my creative energy and aspirations to create even more content.

Currently, I've only had time to hope on a short time to maintain my land and stores, catch up with long time friends I've known for years (wow, the fact I can say I've known some of you for "years" is just amazing!) in SL, and take a quick look-see at new content by new residents. Sure, I'm bummed that I can't devote as much time to SL right now, but that's the benefit of having a life time account...I know I'll be back to invest more time down the line. So for now, I look forward to my next login, wondering what new facinating thing I will encounter or learn, what new developments my friends will tell me about or just experience how fresh and new SL keeps being.

Reading all these positive posts, it's good to know that I'm not the only old skooler who truly believes in the possibilities SL can and will be. It's the endless possibilities that I love about SL...and I love the folks who makes them happen. ;)

Keep makin' it happen, folks...cause if you don't, who will?

I love that the only sex, race, religion, age*, ability or country of origin here is what you bring for the benefit of yourself and the people you care about.

Thanks Fade :)
