What r your thoughts on squaters. Yesterday while working on our property a squater took up house in one of our neighbors homes . This person built some sort of home on top of owners house. The home is scattered with objects. We have contacted the owner but not sure when she will be back. Have any of u had problems with unverfied squatters on your land or neighbors land? This is really starting to irk me with all these people thinking that they can just build and drop what they want on other peoples properties that they have worked so hard to design and unkeep.

If they are pretty high up.. turn flight off, damage on, then return their objects.
Merriment ensues.

It's the reason I now have auto-return on my land for non-group members and my planning for my simulators has concentrated quite carefully on how permissions will work into various aspects (1.12's group changes are going to be real handy for this if they behave correctly).

Last night I logged on to find a house full of junk, dozens of objects, particles and all the usual crap, plus two thoroughly obnoxious 'newbs' on my island. So, I went over to explain that this wasn't on and ask them to clean up and leave. Before I'd finished typing I was pushed to a corner of the sim. So much for the 'disable push' setting!Next move. put shield on, select weapon of choice, enable damage, return all griefer objects, mute griefers (who by this time were whining like the brats they were) and have some 'harmless' fun for a few minutes before ejecting and banning both of them and abuse reporting them. One finds one's entertainment where one can lately.

A possible help..
08-05-2006 12:25
We have all had neighbors that leave the game and sometimes leave lots of property with no autoreturn on and build enabled. This can become quite an eyesore. So how about this when you know that land is pretty much abandoned (even though someone who has not logged on in X months still is listed as owner). Today we will build a special object. *checks neighboring land for prim count* We are gonna build a project called "box O' prims" Say that neighbor has 100 prims left.. ok rez a nice cube and drag copy that sucker 99 times as close to together as possible. Now link the entire thing, label it box o' prims. Now drag that bad boy over to that prop bury it almost completely in the ground (leaving enough exposed so as not to look ugly but is still able to be retrieved by you if needed). Now nobody can build crap on that land. You just protected your neighbors land and made your sim a little better for everyone.

Autoreturn is often not used by people who do not want to have particular things belonging to others returned. We are now able to give permission to selected individuals but I believe they are still subject to autoreturn. How difficult would it be to be able to designate exemptions from autoreturn?

With autoreturn, the ability to return individual avatar's objects, etc. means that nobody should get bent all out of shape these days about stray prims or builds showing up on your property. It's like wireless internet. If you open up your land and allow people to build, don't get pissed if they build on your land. If you setup the autoreturn, which is easier than setting up security on a wireless internet security setting (way easier, like a no brainer) or simply return objects from people you don't know using the available land tools, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Squatters become the land owners amusement and playtoys. There are so many ways to kick em around and eject em. Jonas mentioned one of the best.
What I like to do is plastering their build with smoke bombs and particles, and wait to see if they actually complain to you. hahahahahahahah. and then laugh in their face ... and then ban em.

Ummm...The OP has asked for input regarding squatters who have junked up an absentee neighbor's build which was previously nicely designed and upkept. Granted, there isn't much you can do about another's property, but advice on how to get rid of squatters on your own property is not what she sought.

I let them go for a while.. because theres a very distinct sound of 120 objects hitting a persons inventory at once .. and its rather funny to listen to.

I own a few parcels in 4 sims. I'm not at every parcel all the time. At times, I might not visit my places for weeks at a time. Knowing this, I set all my land for 1 minute autoreturn. To date, my properties remain junk free. Let's also keep in mind that when you have your land set for autoreturn, it slows down griefer self replicating object attacks.
An earlier post suggests hiding objects on neighboring land to prevent unauthorized building. It sounds like a good idea on paper, but I'm really not sure if its the best solution. I'd guess that someone who does not set their land for autoreturn probably lacks knowledge of basic land tools. Let's say that Joe Newbie bought a 1024m plot and put a prefab house on it. Then, for whatever reason, he leaves SL for a few weeks. Later, he decides to do a little landscaping on his lot. When he gets there, he starts trying to rez objects, but he keeps getting the parcel full message. Lacking knowledge of basic land tools, he does not check to see how many objects on his land are not his. He runs to a Linden or the forums to vent. Eventually, someone shows him how to check his object usage, and he discovers the object "box o' prims", created by his neighbor. At this point, he could AR the creator of "box o' prims" for griefing.
If you decide to put objects on another person's land for the purpose of preventing unauthorized building, it might not be a bad idea to put up a small sign that basically explains what you did. This sign should also have simple instructions on how to remove other people's objects from your land. Again, you are risking at least an AR or starting a feud by doing this.

There was once a newbie who set up a store on my land selling freebies. I let him stay for 2 weeks until he moved on to bigger and better things.

I discovered that one of my neighbors had erected a skybox 700 meters above my land (she was obviously out of prims). Earlier that week I had noticed her dropping small prims on my land... I didn't understand what she was doing but once I found the skybox, I realized it must have been an experiment to see if I'd catch on. Apparently she hadn't counted on, say, the MINI MAP showing unexpected green dots on my property? I waited a day before enabling auto-return... gave her time to get the place nice and purdy before its trip to Lost and Found. The thing is? If she had asked first I might have let her put her box there anyway. I have plenty o' primmage to spare.

*nods* Asking first is only polite. In my case, I don't have much primage to spare, so my autoreturn is on and staying on.
I have seen the whole "Neighbor's property with junk on it." Sadly, not much you can do about it, unless you want to add to their primage and hit their land's limit. I'm not sure this would be a good idea, because they might get mad at YOU instead, if they come back.

If it's something that crosses the property line, this can be quite fun, when they find themselves bumping into ban lines trying to walk from one end of their structure to the other.

Mati As someone else said, total up the neighbor's prim limit. If you don't like the looks of it, put up an atractive fence or something...on their side of the border. Also, since these squatters are on property that they don't control, there's no reason you can't put a few 10X10 cubes right over the house that they've put in, to deny them the use of it, and give them some motivation to move along, or get their own land. If you're worried about getting in trouble, you can always use an unverified alt, but a reasonable person shouldn't have a problem.

Abuse report. A post asking for land cleanup assistance in this forum sometimes helps, too.
Make sure to send messages to the land owner letting them know what is going on.
