Helping a suspended friend out..

A real life friend of mine plays this game a lot, and she got an e-mail saying she wasn't old enough to play, and that she would be suspended for ten days. In that amount of time she has to fax/mail some kind of ID to the lab. It also said that if she didn't send her ID within the ten days that her account would be discontinued.

She said she faxed her ID yesterday morning, and that she hasn't been unsuspended, nor has anyone confirmed that they received the fax.

Support is no longer replying to her e-mails, and when she asked some Lindens ingame what happened or how long does it take for the suspension to lift, they said it wasn't their department, didn't know, ask live help(which noone responded to), etc.

So now since she can't get on the forums, I'm asking if anyone has been accused of being underaged, gone through the process of faxing their ID and how long did it take to get back into the game.

Did your friend try to call Linden Labs?

1-800-860-6990 (US and Canada)
(00) 800 722 00010 (UK)
(0011) 800 722 00010 (Australia)

9am-6pm PST, Monday through Friday

It's usually much more efficient to call rather than wait for email or using live help.

IMO you should count yourself lucky they would even accept a faxed confirmation of identity.

Seems like another gigantic loophole if you ask me.

Step 1 - Play game underaged

Step 2 - Allow a friend to report you as "possibly underaged."

Step 3 - Send in low-res fax of fake ID to counter claim.

Step 4 - Continue to play game, confident that you are now completely covered.

She said she would try that last because her cell's out of minutes.

Still hoping for someone to post if they've gone through the suspected/suspended without question/faxed ID/actually got back into the game process.

By the way, tell her it's not a game next time you talk to her.

Shouldn't they be able to match the ID with the name on the credit card?

Yeah, maybe that method of proving your age is a little scetchy, but they said it was an option, and if they're not accepting it with love, then maybe it shouldn't be included as a way to verify one's age.

It's an toll-free call in the U.S. -- she could use a payphone at a gas station even.

Enabran, you can call it whatever you want.

I'll stick with 'game' or the "Metaverse" from Snow Crash..

Cell out of minutes?? is that the only phone she has?? and yes, this is a pain in the butt.. but just think, if your child was the one who was *caught* and no one did anything about it and they were allowed to be exposed to mature content.. how would you feel.?

Becasue the majority of parents do nto watch what their kids are doing on the net, webmasters are forced to take drastic action like this. Webmasters are bound by the law even on the internet and there is a set of guidelines a webmaster must follow. I am greatful that there is a double check system in place ,, all be it not the best .. but what else are you gioing to do. At least soeone cares enough to keep kids safe even if they make a mistake of suspending an adult.

It's all to easy for kids to lie about their ages and it's easy to get a hold of a CC adn fake it. I haev come accross 3 kids so far in this game and I worry about the ammount of supervision there is behind that screen.

Don't take it personal.. all LL is trying to do is the right thing. And they are doing the right thing.

She has a work phone, but it's at work and will call if nothing is resolved tonight.

I understand that they're doing the right thing, but it's just really unorganized.

Put yourself in her position..

Someone you don't know thinks you're underaged, decides to report it, you get an email saying you're suspended for ten days(which seems very exploitable if someone was in a grumpy mood), at the least, you will be offline until they find the fax and unsuspend you(about a week, I've heard).. If they don't get the fax and verification in time, you lose your account, and everything you've made(if you build).

Kids can access almost anything on the net if they really want to, since they usually know more about technology than some adults. Whats more important is, if the press catches some 60 year-old virtual buttfucking some minor and it gets public, it'll be curtains for SL.

That's a bit like saying "I'll stick with calling this goat a railroad or a mammal."

Which part? Game or Metaverse?

This game, or whatever you want to call it, is based off of a part of a book.

It's not a game, it's a toy! Games have goals!

Actually, I'm very comfortable calling it a software toy.

Just posting here to clarify that an "accusation" of being underage isn't enough. If one Resident points at another and goes, "That dude's 14!" then no, that's not admissable as evidence. Rumors, hearsay--does not count. You can't just file a scurrilous report on someone and expect them to be sent to Teen Second Life.

What does count, however, is self-admission of your age. Going "I'm too young for Adult Second Life!" or "I just turned 16 yesterday!" is taken seriously.

Actions aren't taken without sufficient evidence--and of course, if a mistake is made, upon receipt of such proof as a copy of government-issued ID, a profuse apology is in order.

She faxed in her ID.. How long will it take to finally unsuspend her?

Generally, it should be no longer than a few days at most, altho often quicker. And for specifics, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, she should call and ask about it if possible. :)

Take care.
