Hold The Phone: We're losing the REST of Classifieds!

I've just been told that I have misunderstood the keeping of the Classifieds, and I went back to view the announcement, and it may be true.

It was said "New Products" was being kept, but that responses to the posts wouldn't be allowed.

Nothing was said about the REST of the Classifieds.

This would mean the following forums would not be kept:

Land Sales and Rentals
Property Sales and Rentals
Special Attractions
Employment Ops and Help Wanted
Products Wanted
Services
Fansites

Now I don't know about everybody else, but when I first got on SL I spent a huge amount of time perusing ALL these forums. They were very important to me getting a feel for the game. VERY important, and I still look at them all the time. I check out the employment ops, products wanted, fansites, etc. all the time!

Now I'm understanding that all of these other categories are going to be dumped?

If so, why? What is the purpose of curtailing important communication between residents like this???

Is THAT what they meant by compromise? I thought they meant not letting people post comments in the New Products section.

Is this what they meant? And if so, why the heck are they doing this???

P.S. These ups and downs are enough to put me in an early grave.

I, personally, never checked these, even as a newbie. Mabe just Products Wanted (this one should really be kept alive, I must admit), sometimes, to fill in reqests or help them getting filled. So I wont miss them.
As long as they are keeping the New Products alive, I wont complain, and I kind of like the idea of no bumping/no reply, it will make it quick, simple, effective and we wont hear no BS, as i was so tired of hearing "oh, so nice, im on my way to buy them!!" and then nobody even came...
but thats just my 5cents and i guess other players might miss it *shrug*

I like reading all the various forums because it gives me an idea of what's happening in SL. The world has become so large that it's hard to get any kind of an overview, but I do it by reading what's being bought, sold, looked for - I just find it interesting. On the other hand, life will go on and I suppose I'll find another way to get the big picture.

Like I said before, it's a compromise. And I think it's a pretty good one.

Compromise from what? Why are we needing to compromise this anyway? What is being gained by closing these?

Having said that, I will add that I'm tired of worrying about these things. Maybe you will get lucky Enabran, and they will close down every forum on the site.

Well, I'll tell ya what. This - having the New Products stay - is better than nothing. And from now on I will know to read between the lines and figure out earlier what they are not saying, so that I don't get disappointed.

And I think I will just have a new attitude now, and just look at everything we have, or everything that is, as something that might be gone tomorrow, and expect it to be gone. Then when it goes, I won't care, and if we get new good things, I'll just be pleasantly surprised!

Um, I got from first reading that it was just going to be new products that they were keeping. I'm confused how it was hidden?

I agree...who's going to pay $250L to post a request for someone to build or script them something that they're going to have to pay even more for? Who that is looking for a SL job can afford $250L to post a 2 week request for work?

These people are expected to buy Lindens. SL is all about the money now. Welcome to SL 2005. SL 2004 had a lot of promise and 2005 has been a lasting disappointment.

I imagine these sorts of things will be worked in elsewhere in the forums.

I would have been HAPPIER if I hadn't missed it, cause then I wouldn't have gotten all excited!

How could they have written it so I wouldn't have missed it?

They could have said:

"We are going to get rid of all the classifieds, but we will keep the New Products section, except it will be post only."

How hard would that have been?

OR -

- when I posted this thread, I was hoping someone would come and tell me it was just an oversight, a misstatement, and she really meant the CLASSIFIEDS were going to stay, but just be post only, and I was right in the first place. Was I?

Maybe they will clarify it later. But for now, it LOOKS like just what it says: New Products; not Classifieds.

But you know - I just don't really care about it any more. And I'm happy to have new products at least. The ones announcing events, or looking for products, or looking for jobs or employees, or renting or selling land, or looking for fan sites, well, tough darts, I guess. Maybe they can put their query in their signatures.

P.S. Do you see FIC in everything, Enabran?

I am glad to hear that the New Products part of the Classifieds will be kept. IMO they are about the only effective advertising tool in SL that is not third-party.

I think the drama over replies is overblown. I enjoyed getting feedback from my customers. But no replies is better than no New Products.

I have no drama about the no replies part, Surreal. I'm having my drama now about the loss of the rest of the classifieds.

Not really. I just need to get some mileage in on that image. The fact that it twisted your tail so bad is an amusing if unexpected bonus, however.

I get much more pleasure out of your little image (it was yours, wasn't it?) showing the little arrow guy running away from the AR button.

That, young son, is the difference between talent and entertainment that is applied to good ends and talent and entertainment applied to make people unhappy. Aim for the former. End of mommy announcement.

Thoughts:

1. Classifieds on the forum is unscalable.
2. The forums are read by a minority of residents.
3. Word of mouth and brand name recognition works much better than classifieds in the forum.
4. 3rd party sites will take up the functionality of searching.
5. Yeah, I think this could have been talked about more openly as well.

They haven't done #5 for a year now, sadly.

Depends on the topic.

Some changes, like this or stipend changes, they've implmeneted rapidly.

Other changes - well, we've talked about certain issues to death - like ratings reform, HTML, Havok 2, etc.

Actually, while the stipend changed, wasn't it always sorta tied into the ratings? Soo, when they did finally implement it, I actually wasn't that shocked. I can't do as much shopping each week, but eh...*shrugs*
