This was a cool little piece at the end of the broadcast.. unfortunately, like most SL press, they concentrated mostly on the commercial aspects of sl. Theres a few words with one of LL's employees, some dialog with Phillip himself, and they end on a rather humerous note: The CBS news intro plays as it does every night, but with the anchor's name in the intro. We then cut to a view of him in a CBS news studio..

In SL.

Very nice :)

**edit.. Whoops! Someone got to it before me :P

I think that was a pretty good story. The only problem with it was that it wasn't clear that the murder of the Japanese man over the virtual sword was nothing to do with Second Life. Other than that, I thought it was well done. Incidentally, how did he achieve the lip synch in the final section?

Yeah, it did sound like the sword murder occurred in SL... :(

Here's your answer to the lip synch:

Your comments about the sword made me wonder what the sword looked like.
You know, whats the big deal with this sword.
So I started searching and this is all I found so far.
I believe the sword is called the "Dragon Sabre".

Although this one is labeled Dragon Blade on the pic, this was from google images.

So I am not sure if this is the actual sword.

I am surprised that I had any difficulty finding images of this sword.

Anyway it gave me an idea, what if we have a contest to see who can make the best replicate of this sword in SL.
(assuming we can find accurate pics of it.) lol.

Then we take the winning sword and auction it off for charity.

This would not only be a good thing but we could use the whole process to point out the fact that this murder fiasco did not occur in SL.
As well as possibly getting them to do a follow up story on the sword, the process, the contest for charity, and so on.

So if anyone is interested start looking for accurate images of this specific sword.
And post them so anyone can have a reference pic to work from.

Il start another thread in a bit, I have to take off for a while atm.

Or if someone else wants to start a thread on this idea,
go for it!

Or maybe we just dont GET CAUGHT! The CBS report did indeed lead the uninformed into thinking this sword event happened in SL as opposed to WoW. I think CBS needs to clarify that. Or maybe its just good advertising letting people think SL is worth killing over.

And they also need to clarify if:

A) a RL person killed a RL person over a virtual object

B) a SL person killed a SL person over a virtual object

C) a SL person killed a SL person over a RL object

D) a SL person killed a RL person with a SL (or RL) object

... im totally confused...

One of my friends who I've been trying to get into SL for ages saw this thing on her local news, and finally got inspired enough to get out and buy a new graphics card to be able to play SL.

In the sword case, the correct answer is A, but the theft of the virtual object occurred in WOW rather then SL.

Hmmm. Ya think this will give pause to land swoopers, texture thieves,...? :p

Nah. I know; wishful thing.

until the mmorpg's are mainstream, the press will keep doing this to legitimize the concept. most people (we're not the target demographic for an sl intro article) would be thinking "oh it's a silly little game" throughout the article otherwise.

Pretty sure it was a korean game, rather than WoW. Maybe Lineage, not that it matters.
