i can see a lot of excitement for all the (zomg) RL in SL crossing over. seeing as SL as a whole is a RL/SL crossover, it got really old fast for me. i think it's great, and there's a lot of territory to explore, but it's not newsworthy. the sl concerts, like u2 and suzanne vega that have been happening in the last year, well they kind of freak me out. they freak me out more than dozens of players sitting at their computer screens vicariously clubbing and loving through their avatar. i don't understand the value of "live" music through the internet. isn't it no different than listening to a recording? do people feel a real connection with live music in sl like they do you with live live music? i'm asking because i don't. is it for real, or is it some novelty to get headlines and generate some synergy etc.?

Since it's the closest I'll get to 'live' anytime soon, it'll do for me. REO and Styx, two of my all time fav bands are playing here in my area soon. I can never ever find the time to get to see something like this, which just blows. So yeah if they were in SL I'd be pumped about that.

From: Jauani Wu i don't understand the value of "live" music through the internet. isn't it no different than listening to a recording? do people feel a real connection The ones I've attended it was LIVE. I could ask the performer something and they'd respond over the stream between songs. I was interacting with a real performer (ie person). It is not the same as just some MP3 file.

I'm going to ask Simon le Bon if he received my letters. I sent them 20 years ago. They should have arrived to the UK by now.

I can't speak for big acts like Suzanne Vega, but I can comment on Second Life's growing number of smaller live peformers. Live music in SL is not the same as a recording. First of all, it is being performed and streamed live, which means it tends to be a bit raw and unplugged instead of a dubbed and processed recording. Secondly, yes, we do feel a connection to the music and the artist. Typically the performer is interacting with their audience far more intimately than a real life concert would make available. Smaller audiences with their name floating above their head, and the ablity of the audience to provide feedback to the performer in almost-real-time make these concerts special.

I agree, I wouldn't get any more enjoyment from a 'live' sl show than I would a live TV broadcast, in fact I would prefer the lower lag TV version! But I still think it's pretty cool, and for reasons you have already suggested: It's a novelty. I think the idea of these people doing these things in SL is more exciting than the actual attending them.

From: Jauani Wu like u2 and suzanne vega that have been happening in the last year, well they kind of freak me out. Just to clarify, U2 in SL is not the real band. They are roleplayers that generally are streaming bootleg concerts and acting out the performance. It is quite impressive what they have done, but tis not the real thing. Also to me I get excited to listen to live streams of shows. I cant be there otherwise and if I love the band then it is a pleasure for me to listen to it. I love live concert CDs etc, always have. The idea that it is being played right then and for us in SL is pretty darn cool if you think about it. Just as personal in that respect as being at the venue, just not in flesh and blood.

From: Tatiana Sims Well thanks for bursting my bubble!!! *crying now* lol! Very very sorry. Dont wanna do that, but even U2inSL is VERY careful to let people know this. Last thing they want is a lawsuit making a tribute to an awesome band. I am sure many people have signed up for the one campaign for the work they have done here.

For those of us who are no longer in the twenty-something category, it gets pretty tough to get out on weeknights to see live music played. I used to attend 2-3 shows per week during my early 20s, and I miss it. Seeing people perform live in SL - even if they're in their garage or their home - is still damn cool, and it's fun to be able to interact. I've been known to heckle Flaming Moe quite a bit through type - although he gets to respond through the microphone, and his Buffalo Sabers ending up beating my Philadelphia Flyers. Regards, -Flip

I have heard it all by now) and I didnt go. I wasnt sick or anything it was just the first time I thought "bah.. too many kids are gonna be there" I am too young for that thinking!! lol

Regards, -Flip I can see how the interaction part is a cool added dimension to the experience, but when it comes to the bigger acts that attract 100s into a sim struggling to cope with the load, that interaction is going to be next to non-existent :/

concerts, live events and the like are part of the fabric that makes up SL and they are a great way to meet to people - it would be cool to go to one of these events and meet some people that post here, chill out and enjoy the show, then chat / socialise afterwards. Thats what this "game" is all about.

There are pros and cons with both a RL and SL live performance. Although you don't feel a SL live show with all 5 senses as you would a RL show, there are aspects that can only be gotten in this SL universe. A live show is definitely something more than just a recording or taped broadcast.
On that note, I have the ability to bring in some performances from RL headlining DJs. The reason I havn't yet is because a majority of the SL community would not be interested, or not find these DJs to be any different from our current SL DJs. But i do have the ability to have some very cool DJ shows with some of the top RL electronic & house music DJs out there. Is there any interest in that?

What Flip said.
Pretty much the only events I go to in SL is live music. The quality isn't always that good, the genre isn't always my cup of tea. But pretty often, the vibes are there. Live music in SL rocks! And it will only get better.

As a rock musician who plays and goes to gigs a lot, I must say the music scene in SL is very interesting, but in terms of (sound) quality and pure visceral punch, Jauani's right, it is still lacking a certain something over actually going and seeing a band. If you haven't done so in a while, you should. It's amazing!
i really look forward to seeing what happens and how SL music develops (and taking part)

What's the big deal with any of it? Shouldn't we all be just tired of it all? Shouldn't you all go outside and see the real sun?
My pal, Chip Douglas, had this to say, which I think is important here, "You'll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There's no end to the possibilities! "

A few years ago I found a website that had live cams in various clubs. You could just log in and see and hear what was going on in the club. I checked the schedule and was able to see a band gigging in an Los Angeles club. I was never able to see this band back in the 80's because I dont think they toured a lot, but it was really cool to be able to log on and see them. I was thrilled, it was very exciting, even though I was just sitting home alone.
If you cant be there in person, virtual presence is the next best thing, isnt it?

I'm a big Killing Joke fan, I've seen them live at least 15 times over the past 10 years. I also have their music and some live music and video. 'Being there' is unique - listening at home can never be the same due to many things including computer hardware. I've heard and more importantly felt - double bass drumming that made me think I would involuntarily empty my bowels, I've been squashed like a sardine amongst countless others in 100 degree heat with this music hammering out. I'll never get that experience through SL while having a nice cup of tea and keeping my eye open for the lottery results.

I perform live, record and listen to live music in RL quite frequently and SL "live" performances don't have the same energy that real live performances do. And at times the SL "live" performances are studio recordings anyway! Yes, the performer is interacting with the audience, but they are sitting at home streaming a recorded performance of themselves. (Or in one case, someone else!) I am not saying no one in SL performs live--they do, but I have seen (heard) these recorded live performances more than once. I guess they figure that people can't tell, so why not. They are probably correct.

i really look forward to seeing what happens and how SL music develops (and taking part) I've not had the opportunity to view/experience a concert in SL yet, but have watched a live stream of a Duran concert over the "computer waves" a few years back. It's not the same as standing in the crowd in front of the stage, getting all five senses inundated (which I've done 32 times with Duran), but I have to admit that I got a strange adrenaline rush when they took the stage, even though I was just sitting in the den with one of my girlfriends, staring at a computer screen. I agree with you that there is a "visceral punch" when you're at the live show, whether it's Duran Duran (which, personally, I can't think of any other band holding a candle to live, and I've been to a helluva lotta shows in my 36 years on the planet) or Kings X or Bravery or Reverend Horton Heat or <insert your favorite band here>. As one of the folks in this thread said, he/she is going to see Gary Numan, and I'd give the world to see that show, but I don't think he's playing in my neck of the woods. Because Duran is the only band I travel to see, I'd need the convenience of SL to experience the Numan show. So I'm thankful the SL music scene is out here, and I'm looking forward to giving it a try. And I'm thankful Duran is giving it a try, too. (Now, can I count their upcoming SL gig as one of the times I've seen them, or is that cheating? ) And now that Roxy Music is making a new album with the original lineup, can we get them in SL? (Because I bet they won't be making a stop in my neck of the woods, either...although I'd travel to the South Pole to see that show if need be...)

Now all we need is a Marilyn Manson concert & I'll be all giggley Altho Styx & REO Speedwagon would be nifty too! Like someone else posted, I'm hoping the Duran Duran concert is at a "continent friendly" time, or at least on a weekend.
